LXQt 0.16 has already been released and these are its most important changes

The LXQt Desktop Environment Developers (developed by the entire LXDE development team and Razor-Qt projects) announced the release of the new version of LXQt 0.16, in which improvements have been made to the environment applications, as well as the addition of 3 new themes.

LXQt is positioned as a lightweight, modular, fast and convenient continuation from the development of the Razor-qt and LXDE desktops, which has absorbed the best features of both.

For those who are unaware of LXQt, you should know that this is a free and open source desktop environment for Linux, the result of the merger between the LXDE and Razor-qt projects and which is positioned as an excellent option for low-resource teams or those who prefer to save resourcess, as the biggest improvement to LXQt is it provides a lightweight desktop and much more control than LXDE.

What's new in LXQt 0.16

In LXQt 0.16 made some improvements to the file manager PCManFM-Qt and the underlying LibFM-Qt library, since options have been added to switch to a new tab and open tabs from the last window. File classification has been made more natural by treating dot as a delimiter, which matches GTK's behavior.

Have been added new options to file open dialog and the configuration changes are saved. Added an option to open directories located on the desktop in the default file manager, not just in PCManFM-Qt and added "Default Applications" dialog to the lxqt-config-file-association configurator, which allows you to select the default web browser, file manager, and mail client (consequently, the file association configuration is removed from the LXQt session).

Also, in this new version of LXQt 0.16 now the LXQt panel has the ability to configure the automatic hiding of the status indicator (status notifier). Added an option to task buttons to move windows to the next screen.

The main menu has amcontextual enú displayed when you right-click. A mode to place ungrouped buttons has been implemented of an application side by side.

A section has been added to LXQt Power Management to configure the actions to be taken when the off, sleep and standby buttons are pressed.

The terminal emulator QTerminal implements options to open a new tab to the right of the current one and disable closing a tab when the middle mouse button is pressed.

The image viewer LXImage-Qt has expanded the number of image types compatible. Added ability to resize images. Added button to copy file path to image.

Of the other changes that stand out from LXQt 0.16:

  • Added the ability to select and customize color palettes to the lxqt-config appearance configurator.
  • Improved screen brightness control interface.
  • The LXQt Archiver file manager has been configured to open the contents of RPM packages.
  • The libQtXdg library adds calls to configure and define the default web browser, file manager, and mail client.
  • In the system to show notifications, an option has been added to show notifications on the screen next to the mouse cursor.
  • The PulseAudio Volume Control widget solves problems when connecting audio devices with a Bluetooth interface.
  • Three new skins added: Clearlooks, Leech, and Kvantum.
  • In parallel, work continues on the release of LXQt 1.0.0, which will provide full support to work on Wayland.

Finally se expect the compilations for Ubuntu (LXQt is offered by default on Lubuntu), Arch Linux, Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, FreeBSD, ROSA and ALT Linux, are ready in a matter of hours or in a few days (depending on the distribution).
