MagpieOS: a Bangladeshi distribution based on Arch Linux

Magpy OS

Today We will take the opportunity to take a look at this Linux distro which is practically new. MagpieOS is a Linux distribution created by a young Bangladeshi, this was created with the simple purpose of having created your own Linux distribution.

Rizwan is the creator of MagpieOS and he started using Linux a few years ago, which is why he was amazed and encouraged him to create his own Linux distribution.

There will be those who think

"Another junk distribution, which is useless, just one more to the pile."

They may or may not be right, I am not who, to judge this part, but may I say that this is simply the purpose of open source, freeing her from taking the code and doing what you like with it as long as you do the same "provide the code".

And this part is debatable because there are many applications and distributions that simply violate this simple rule.

But getting back to the point how many of you do not want to be able to create your own Linux distribution, either because you want to contribute something to the community, focus on some need or simply because you have the knowledge.

MagpieOS is intended to be a simple distribution, only with what is necessary without adding or removing, just what is right.

What is MagpieOS?

MagpieOS is basically a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that its main desktop environment is GNOME 3 although we also have the option to choose a version with XFCE.

MagpieOS Features

Within the programs that MagpieOS offers us natively we find: Firefox as web browser, LibreOffice such as the office suite, the Uget download manager, the Bleachbit cleaning tool, Notepadqq, SUSE Studio Image Writer, Pamac Package Manager, Gparted, Gimp, Rhythmbox music player, Simple Screen Recorder as desktop recording application.

We also found some included extensions for Gnome as well as the tool for Gnome tweaks.

The heart of the system is Kernel 4.15 which already has the fixes that solve the problems of Specter and Meltdown.

As well the creator of MagpieOS gives us a custom repository with icons and themes which according to Rizwan these are not available in other Arch or AUR based distributions.

MagpieOS already has several updates so far this year, since it is currently in its version 2.2 and only in January it was in its version 1.0, therefore it is a distribution that is constantly updated.

Being based on Arch Linux it has all its benefits and benefits, including the main one, and in my opinion the best thing about Arc is that it is Rolling Release.

When Rizwan started with Linux, he started using Ubuntu and if I agree with him in something, it is in the following, what they write us to:

At first, he was happy with it. However, sometimes the software you wanted to install was not available in the repositories and you had to Google the correct PPA. You decided to switch to Arch because Arch has many packages that were not available in Ubuntu. Rizwan also liked the fact that Arch is a mobile version and will always be up to date.

Although one of the big problems of Arch Linux is that its installation is not something friendly with new users as well as with newbies. It was what led Rizwan to simplify this process.

And that is how MagpieOS was born, in order to facilitate the installation and migration of Ubuntu to a more friendly system.

In the same way, if you want to support the developer, you can do it from the options that it leaves us on its official website.

Hello, since I discovered this distro I am very happy, since it was the hybrid of having to deal with the roughness of arch, and moving on to the exemplary part, I am not saying that you always have to go against the current, but sometimes you have to give opportunity. MagpieOS taught me that you can do something well and improve, its simple installation guide is so far unbeatable, after the death of Antergos, I have had the best Arch experience with MagieOS since no other has stopped working for me so far. Criticize in favor, many, but against, its repo, it became obsolete, the developer, left the project abandoned, it is a pity that something so simple that I could get many people to move to Linux, is left aside, a great pity , for anyone who wants to try and have an option apart from the ubuntu classics, which is highly overvalued, debia, centos, etc…. Given the view, at least more than 18 years of pure Linux use, I hope the Solus project does not fall into the same thing, I hope it expands its repo, and begins to release more soft like the other distros that many like, in what Arch in particular is something that took a while to discover and it was nice, but today it could give encouragement to a project that is slowly emerging as Solus, and if supported it would be very big and more. I know that MagpieOS will die soon, a shame, I hope its developer reconsiders and bet more and gives a turn to that situation. Search results
