Well, I'm not an old man, but if I get nostalgic and I like arcade games, do not judge me! Well, here there are already entries about MaMe, but today I inform you that it is officially opensource.
MaMe was always open source, but under its own license, which as you know for many developers implied restrictions, such as making your own version for a commercial project, as a consequence it also limited itself to bring innovations and delve further into the world of video games. This emulator is available for linux and windows.
There are many roms, I particularly tried a few that I liked about those arcade machines that I used to play as a child and spend hours losing my money, but having a good time (hahaha). You just have to go to google and put that name of the game you want the most with the words "room mame" and that's it. On their official website you can also get some rooms HERE.
Not in the mood to make such a fuss, it's also better if you download those Mega Packs out there. Some of them weigh up to 20GB in pure games, can you imagine? A game does not weigh more than 1MB, they must be like 9341209480129350912859150 games hehehe.
In short, it moved with the GPLv2 license and some of its components 3 Clause BSD License, plus other licenses, because it depends on many third-party plugins.
En GitHub This is its source code, for those who do not want to waste another second and start developing or installing this application.
I installed it in linux mint in 30 seconds like this:
aptitude install mame mame-tools mame-extra
We edit the configuration file:
vi /etc/mame/mame.ini
Here we put «1» if you have a multicore processor
# Set multithreading to '1' if you have more than one core
multithreading 1
And here we add where our rooms will be, by default it brings these add where you normally download your rooms.
rompath $ HOME / mame / roms; / usr / local / share / games / mame / roms; / usr / share / games / mame / roms
And we run the emulator with:
/usr/games/mame
