Manage apps and take snapshots in FirefoxOS with the ZTE Open

As many of you already know, I have a phone in my hands ZTE Open with Firefox OS, and as I prepare the Review, I want to leave some tips that I have learned in these days.

Managing applications

It caught my attention that, being a Smartphone, did not have the option to manage open applications simultaneously.

That is, I would open the browser for example, and then open something else by closing the previous one. What I did not know was that, by pressing the keys HOME for a few seconds, I could manage all my open applications.

Capturing the screen

The other day it happened to me that I "by chance" took a screenshot. As much as I experimented, I did not discover how to do it until today. How?

Well, pressing at the same time, for an instant, the key HOME and the button Power (On off)..

    Same as android then

    1.    elav said

Well, in the end I think that the Kernel is the same as Android, but modified. Such is the case, that ADB is used (or can be used) to update the device

      1.    pixie said

if you use the same android kernel

does the aesthetics of Firefox OS look very nice, how is speed, consumption, etc?

    1.    elav said

For 256 MB of RAM and a 1GHz processor, it's pretty fast. 😉

      1.    cat said

I find it curious that this is the case, since it is based on the heavier version of Android (ICS). Good for the Mozilla guys.

        1.    elav said

Well, imagine that, while an Android update may be 1.4 GB, a FirefoxOS update does not exceed 150 MB. 😀

          1.    cat said

Besides that it gets rid of the «resource-eater» of Java (Dalvik).

The truth is I think Mozilla has done a good job. As I said in another post, now that WhatsApp is going to be available before the end of the year, I see no problem in purchasing one. Since it is practically the application that I use.

I have a doubt, the applications are local, are they webapps or both? Do you notice a difference between one and the other, apart from the loading time?

Greetings and I look forward to the review!

    1.    elav said

Well yes, they are doing an excellent job, but there are weak points. For example, they have not released an updated Build for the ZTE Open officially, so it is time to compile from GitHub.

The point is that, when I start to compile, it sends me to look for a script in googlecode and there everything is screwed up, because Cuba does not have access. The Geekphones do have the builds available to download.

Otherwise, excellent. And they say that with the new versions everything improves, performance, effects ...

      1.    Tesla said

Man, I don't know how the issue is in Cuba, but can someone send you the script from outside? Or would it be useless?

Anyway, something that makes me suspicious of FxOS is that the apps are webapps. This makes me a little distrustful. The fact that it's all on the web.

I guess that with typical applications it won't happen, right? I say with those of Telephone, SMS, ...

        1.    Richard said

WebApps is not the same as a website ... the applications run local and it is that point that we must break so that there is no longer any distrust of Firefox OS

        2.    elav said

On the applications, yes, some local, others against the Internet. For the local ones I use: With Backup that saves my contacts in the MicroSD, and Explorer, to see the files in the MicroSD and they work well.

Come on, come on and stop torturing us ... don't announce the review any more and just publish it, I'm waiting for it as a good thing ...

    1.    ianpocks said

Charlie-Brown I'm looking forward to it too. I'm surprised that it goes smoothly with 256mb. I'm thinking that the fault that android needs so much ram is from the dalvik virtual engine and that it works with java. I don't understand how they don't lighten it….

On the other hand I hope to see what will be jewel and tizen….

You went from not seeing sense having WP and the Lumia 520, to saying that you are interested in trying it 🙂 It's a Christmas miracle !!!

I said that I want to try it, not that it makes sense XDDD! I would not trade my windows phone for anything.

Congratulations elav for your new ZTE Open, I am glad that you are already finding the trick 🙂 Continue with these guides, they do not hurt.

What I would expect from firefoxOS, is that it can be customized more than the android without the need for root. and without restrictions on the part of the operators, but that is only a momentary dream.

Hello! You know, I'm going to get a new phone in a few days, and I would like to know the details of this equipment. Many people say that it is the worst team, but I see it as very attractive and with many advantages, well, I'm not a geek either, I'm a novice and my preferences are for teams somewhat simple. Can you answer me the following?
How is the interaction with the touchscreen? is it slow, is it fast?
how often are there updates? Do they work? There are changes? Do I have to have a balance if I want to update?
It costs to download the Facebook twitter from the MarketPlace ... or is it necessary to have an internet plan to open the marketplace?
The volume and the music and alarm settings… is it ideal for lifting a sleepyhead like me? I mean volume and vibration and all that.
In many places I have read that you cannot change the ringtone of calls ... in any case, how is it done?
I hope I didn't machine-gun you with questions, although I think I did, but it's for a good cause! C: Thanks in advance!

Tomorrow I will answer you calmly .. Greetings

It really all depends from the point you look at. I find the ZTE to be an excellent terminal (in terms of design and performance) for people with little purchasing power or who want something simple.

      Answering your questions:
1- The Touch depends on the version of FirefoxOS you have installed and the number of open applications, as the response will be higher or lower depending on the performance. That if, although it may not be a Galaxy or an iPhone, it is quite acceptable.

2- In every update there are changes. You have 3 ways to do it:
      - Or wait for the official updates from ZTE, which are usually slow.
      - Or you use a ROM compiled by a member of the Community.
      - Or you compile your own ROM.

3- If you have a place to connect via WiFi, you don't need the company's Internet plan.

4- The alarm is quite scandalous .. believe me hahaha.

5- It is true that in versions 1.0 to 1.2 you cannot change the tones "easily", but as of 1.3 you can set custom tones. There is always a way to change things when the product is OpenSource, but the work is somewhat cumbersome, since the official tones would have to be replaced by the ones you want to add.

      I hope I have helped you 😉

Well I have the cell phone but it is not a big deal, it is a low range as you know, but very low, so much so that when they want to use the multi-applications and change the application, the other applications are generally closed and I do not like that at all (Like for example the MAPS). Otherwise it is consistent with its price.

  15.   Daniel Herrera said

I bought a ZTE Open in V.1.1 and I will tell you very interesting things:

1- The Telephone, as they already said, is a very low range, however, the price is good.
2- despite having the apps to manage, the apps are closed, that is a disadvantage.
3- There is no official WhatsApp app yet, however it does not mean that there is no WA for Firefox OS, there are apps like OPENWAPP, CONECTA2 AND LOQUI IM, they are good, even for programmers, WhatsApp on its official page offers different services for Open Source.
4- the interface is very good, it is fast, a little difficult to write (at least for those who are not used to touch like me)

In summary, it is a good phone, obviously they will complain because many expected something else, but after hearing well that it is NOT a high-end phone, IT IS LOW-RANGE gentlemen, the phone is very perfect, it is very good for what it is made, for people who simply want something new, simple, and with their basic needs.

What you have written is already trite

    1.    elav said

If what you want to say is that it is already known, then you are right, only when I wrote this post (some time ago) many did not know it. With this I tell you friend, that if what you wanted to say was just that, your comment does not make sense.

HAHAHA, I was looking a lot on this phone for that option and I had resigned myself to not having it. Thank you very much, although I still want another phone for some details.
