Marissa Mayer explains why there are no more female programmers

Marissa Mayer in an interview on huffingtonpost Series WomenInTech explains her point of view on the issue of the integration of women to computing and in general in the geek world. Mayer is well known for her work at Google since graduating from Stanford, often being a public figure for the company. She is currently serving as Vice President of Localization and Local Services. In this interview, among other things, she talks about her concerns about the number of women working in the technological world.

Mayer argues that the problem of the low number of women programmers and women Internet entrepreneurs is a problem of how we view technology. Well, as we grow up, girls are offered a closed stereotype of what it means to be a geek (someone traditionally alone who spends hours typing in front of a screen). Attracting more women to technology would mean breaking this stereotype and showing girls that you don't have to like video games to be a geek girl. Mayer herself was a ballet dancer with a penchant for pastels and Oscar de la Renta's fashion.

The most important thing we can do to increase the number of women in technology is to show variety in role models. The rigid stereotype of what it is to be a programmer (computer scientist) really affects people's understanding and ability to identify with the role, we need people to be able to say “Yes this is something I want to be a part of".

Mayer is optimistic that Facebook, Twitter and Google sites, as well as next-generation phones will be catalysts in shifting the ratio in technical roles by clarifying the practical applications of computer science. Although women and men in the industry face similar challenges, the difference for some women is that it is important for them to understand how their careers will influence people's daily lives.

Women really want to see the application of what they do in people's lives. Many women do not see how programming (computer science) reaches people.

As we become more familiar with technology, women will be more drawn to computer science. One reason Mayer thinks this is that these years women are experimenting a lot with technology on a day-to-day basis. When you use those things on a daily basis, you become more curious to know how they were made.

So far Mayer's impressions.

It must be exciting to see a woman program 😀 at least I would love it 🙂

Mweh, it is when he knows what he is doing and says I have seen a couple and they become worse than a man in love with some language or technology.

Be careful, I have met two developers who have left me speechless, but the vast majority in my university (women) in the computer science career, in fact, they are not interested in the career ...

    1.    Hugo said

I remember that in a course I took once there were two girls who programmed very well, they made a website from scratch with html and javascript that was nice to see; they were also good at Java. However, I don't recall seeing them participate in tech discussions like we boys used to do during breaks.

In the computer engineering career I have also noticed some girls who are very intelligent and / or studious because they do very well in exams, but I do not perceive that they feel passion for technology, at least as I felt it, for example recently, while doing that a Debian 6.0 installation would work properly with two SATA disks in a hardware RAID1 configuration, additionally with LVM partitions.

Of course, this appreciation is subjective, since we cannot know what another person feels, but since women are usually communicative, one would expect them to also talk about technology if it really was of interest to them, and this rarely happens.

Traditionally, technology is closely associated with men (our species likes stereotypes and delights in them), but they are social conventions that time will change -or so I hope-. I have friends who are as playful or computer fond as I am; the times change.

  5.   ianpock's said

Well, I have a friend who studied computer science because in her city it was the only thing that could be studied at the university.

And let's go, he took the race with a note that more than one would like.

In the end he has never exercised is more, he does not like anything that goes hand in hand with linux because in the race he had to fight with slackware and company and he did not like to go typing to activate an external hard disk and blah blah blah.

The issue that you have to do what motivates you, now the only thing you do is program with sap in windows.

And that's when he has free time, but we know that work does not motivate him to work as a computer.

    Sad but real

    1.    Courage said

Studying what you don't like is the worst thing a person can do.

I say this from experience, that I study a medium degree that I hate with all my soul.

If she wanted to study architecture but look at her parents they would not let her emancipate herself, total for 150 kilometers there are….

Now she lives in that city and she doesn't want to study anymore, she has a bitter memory of her studies (poor woman was traumatized),

In addition to not keeping a good memory of the parents

        1.    Courage said

          What is emancipation?

          1.    Wolf said

When you are a minor, your parents or your legal guardian make the most important decisions regarding your life. When you turn 16, I think I remember, you can emancipate yourself, which means taking the legal reins of your existence and being able to live on your own without depending on the will of a legal guardian. Of course, this also carries risks, you have to show that you are financially self-sufficient and stuff.

But in this context, I suppose she is simply referring to her parents not letting her live alone in another city.

          2.    Courage said

It is not my personal experience, I study in an engineering school (chemistry, nothing to do with programming) and the careers that have more women are industrial chemistry and systems engineering (I think it is the same as computer science or at least similar). Where if there are no women at all they are in electronic and mechanical ing, there are complete salons without any girl.

I have also noticed that lack of passion of women when I was in the computer science career, although it must be said that in the technical aspect they painted my face. Nobody beat them in exams.
Perhaps in the practical aspect it is where it fails them, but I know cases in which with a lot of work that was overcome.
