Microsoft bought Skype!

There have been a lot of rumors about the sale of Skype in recent weeks, with Microsoft finally acquiring Skype for $ 8.500 billion. The Linuxeros we can say goodbye to the famous VoIP messaging program? Now it will be paid? All this and much more…

According to Microsoft reports:

Microsoft Corp. and Skype Global Sarl. reached a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, from the Silver Lake investment group for $ 8.500 billion in cash.

Later, the statement reports:

Skype will support devices like the Xbox and Kinetic, Windows Phone and a wide range of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients operating on non-Microsoft platforms.

Anyway, Linuxeros friends, don't be hopeful; it is very likely that Microsoft will continue to provide a version of Skype that is completely out of date with respect to its version for Windows, that the code is still closed, etc., etc.

It is clear that this "move" by Microsoft has to do with an attempt to acquire greater market share in the cloud and laptops (pads, video consoles, telephones, netbooks, etc.). They partnered with Nokia, they tried Office 360, also Bing, now they bought Skype.

Can we expect Skype to fall out of favor like everything Oracle and Microsoft have touched in the past? We'll see ... I, for now, insist: come over a XMPP (google voice). which is compatible with Pidgin and Empathy. On the other hand, there are many other free alternatives for VoIP.

Yes ... it was a mistake ... a note was republished that we made a long time ago. 🙂
We are doing some tweaks on the blog ... that's why.
Perhaps there are more articles to which the same thing happens.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

The worst news I have received today, everything Microsoft touches is fourth, as is its messenger, unstable wherever you look at it. Too bad, it's a shame that it fell into the hands of «garkas»

What strange thing, this news does not have time?

Yes .. it turns out that we are making some changes to the blog and the news was republished.
    Sorry! Cheers! Paul.

That is a good question. Sure they have audio support, but I don't know if they have video support. I'm going to find out and if I get a positive response, I'll put together a post, do you think?
    Cheers! Paul.

One of the things I like about Skype is its certain "neutrality" that has to be totally eliminated now that Microsoft bought it, given the company's unique nature.

For this reason I plan to migrate and recommend migration to my contacts to free alternatives such as oovoo, ekiga and even why not google talk (and google voice).

Too bad, goodbye to one of the greats!

Ha! Sep… it seems that M $ has in mind to create an HTML 5 version of Skype!

I imagine that this great program must already be changing for the worse, for the same reason it is always using free platforms and technologies.

pfff, although it was a very strong strategic move that of Microsoft: I do not see a good omen for Skype on "non-Microsoft" platforms…. maybe it won't happen exactly like OpenOffice but ...

I have never considered Ms an enemy, but if you close Skype it will become, hahahaaa
We would only have to look for other alternatives, personally I do not use that service and no other with similar characteristics, so I do not know an alternative

Good date. I already knew it but it is good to spread it to others.
What I'm wondering is if there will be a native Linux messaging client that supports voice and video chat (but especially the latter).
    Cheers! Paul.

Do not worry. Surely, shortly, we are going to make a post about possible alternatives.

The closest thing is http://ekiga.org/, but I never tried it.
I know there are other projects among them http://www.gnutelephony.org/index.php/GNU_Free_Call_Announcement. But they are still very green ...
We will have to be patient, che, and as my grandmother said »there is no harm than good
    Do not come.

Hello, there is a new application, which could well replace Skype on our platform,
His name is Jitsi and here I present them: http://jitsi.org/.
It is multiplatform, and with several functionalities, more than interesting, it is also available in .deb .rpm and repos can be added in Ubuntu, Dbian and derivatives.
    Greetings.
