MuPDF: ultra-fast and lightweight PDF viewer

MuPDF is a viewer of PDF very lightweight that can quickly open large PDF files even on slow computers.

If you've ever had to open a large PDF file in Evince, you've probably noticed its miserable performance, especially on older computers.

Since MuPDF is focused on being fast and keeping the code size small, it does not include some existing functionality in Evince, but in return, we get enviable performance. Thus, for example, the user interface only displays the PDF and to navigate the document (next page, rotate, zoom, text search, go to a page, etc.), it is necessary to use keyboard shortcuts as explained here.

MuPDF also comes with some tools (in the "MuPDF-tools" package) that allow you to convert a PDF file to a series of images (pdfdraw), repair documents, decrypt and decompress PDF files (pdfclean), as well as some debugging tools that allows you to extract sources from PDF files, display information about internal objects, etc. (pdfshow, pdfextract and PDFInfo).

Installation

En Ubuntu and derivatives:

MuPDF is available from the official Ubuntu repositories, but it is an old version. Many improvements have been added to MuPDF 1.0 and 1.1: better memory management, multi-threaded loading, better viewing of documents, and more. If you want to install the version from the official repositories, simply search for MuPDF in the Ubuntu Software Center.

To install the latest version (MuPDF 1.1) on Ubuntu 12.10, 12.04 or 11.10, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: guilhem-fr / mupdf
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install MuPDF

Installation in Arch and derivatives:

pacman -S mupdf

Greetings, I'm Bernie and I'm truly glad that I stumbled on blogger.
com. If you don't mind, I just have one quick question. I was curious to know how you focus yourself and clear your mind before writing. I have had problems with clearing my mind in order to get my ideas out. I love writing once I get into it, but in most cases I feel as if I end up wasting the first 10 to 15 minutes driving myself to focus. Do you have any suggestions or techniques?

Thanks, I already tried it. I think that for the use that I give to the pdf it does not serve me much. I did not know well how to select the texts. In addition, it does not go from one page to another as in other readers. Anyway, thanks, at least I met a new pdf reader.

I was surprised by the simplicity of this viewer, it handles many PDFs and sometimes an interface like this is really nice to read, I use the epdfview for printing reasons, but this is perfect to view the pdfs quickly, it is monstrously light and intuitive its keyboard navigation , it has quickly become my main pdf viewer.
Thank you very much for the article.

    Hello,

I installed mupdf some time ago because it was recommended to me, but it does not appear in the start menu. Free office, abiword ... if they appear to me. Only evince appears from pdf. On the other hand, in the software center I can see that I have it installed. I don't know where he's hiding.

    I have lubuntu 14.04 lts

I am looking for a fast pdf reader for slow PCs because my Windows tablet is a snail. This did not help, I would have to be using the virtual keyboard to scroll through the document. It does not work for touch interface but what does it load the files wonderfully, does it load them?
