My experience with Zentyal

Plant

Greetings to all, it has been a long time since I wrote in DesdeLinux for work reasons and today I want to share an experience that departs somewhat from the published for my web development and get into administration.

After some time managing the network of the company where I work, there was a need to migrate the existing configuration for the management of the domain and basic services of our intranet.

The existing configuration was based on Debian + Samba 3 + LDAP, BIND9 + Postfix and everything else that hangs for the creation of a PDC in Linux and that provides services to PCs with Windows XP system and higher. This scenario presented difficulties in maintenance and made the process of user management and recovery from a possible failure cumbersome.

After analyzing the existing possibilities and looking for the almost ideal balance, we opted for the use of Plant, solution that displays all the services needed by us.

Plant (formerly named eBox) is a solution for small and medium-sized companies, which takes the best of Free Software and unifies all or almost all the needs in a network with a business nature or not. Among the solutions it provides we can mention: management of network infrastructure, gateway, office or communications server, to mention the main ones.

Many are the elements that are analyzed when selecting a system and in particular in the selection of Zentyal, the documentation, the community support, the base of the system (which although it is Ubuntu Server LTS although I would prefer Debian), the way in which It is managed and that in a single CD we have everything we need, were the factors that made it our choice.

So far, it seems to me that it has been shown that for us Zentyal is the solution, so we must enter into the matter, but something if I want to clarify, I do not intend to turn this post into a tutorial on how to deploy Zentyal, but rather to talk about those details that normally hinder the adoption of a platform or system and I explain why not to talk about the installation.

On the Zentyal documentation site, it covers the entire process in detail and the best in our language, becoming an obligatory point of reference.

Once the installation is completed and the services to be deployed have been selected, many users have encountered the problem that when adding a new service at another time, it is impossible, since they cannot use the CD of our installation, why does this happen? the package manager simply ignores it.

Reviewing the apt configuration files, notice that it was not referenced in the source.list to the installation CD and yes to various Ubuntu and Zentyal repositories. The solution is very simple and you only need to use the command:

$ sudo apt-cdrom add

It adds our installation CD to the source.list that we have previously commented on all the existing lines in it and at this moment we can add as many services as we want from those provided by Zentyal.

At this point I have installed my Zentyal with the necessary services in our company and this is where the second obstacle arises.

The mail service in Zentyal uses Postfix and Dovecot, its configuration is quite simple, allowing direct delivery in the case of companies or institutions facing the Internet or using smarthost and this is my case, but the server delivery that makes relay on our network was impossible.

After spending several hours breaking our heads and a few calls to our friend Elav who has experience in Zentyal, we realized that in the parameter mynetworks in the main.cf from Postfix the ip of our relay was not declared and the magic was done and our server was already receiving and sending our relay.

But happiness is never complete, when resetting the settings of the main.cf postfix had changed to its previous state and this was because, well, Zentyal's philosophy is based on the management of system configuration files through templates, which are found in / usr / share / zentyal / stubs / and they are grouped by the different services so the desired options are modified or added and when restarting the service or the same server the changes will be permanent in the configuration files.

In the official documentation the "Advanced customization of services" section explains in detail how to make adjustments to the configuration templates and the recommended practice to modify the configuration templates, an option that I currently use.

My brand new server with Zentyal already at this point, provided all the services in my network without problems, on the contrary what at one time was an odyssey, it was not. PCs with Microsoft Windows XP and above were joining the domain smoothly and this is one of the big changes in Zentyal 3 when using Samba 4.

The following services were already available in our network:

  • Webmail with the amazing Roundcube interface.
  • Proxy and its configuration in the browsers through automatic configuration (my contribution).
  • Time server through ntp.
  • A complete PDC for stations in Microsoft Windows.
  • Firewall service for network nat and access control.
  • Messenger Service.
  • Monitoring of services.
  • User and service administration interface.

Up to this point, what was left to do? Well, to get the users of certain groups to have access to the domains through the Proxy that would be allowed and the truth that Zentyal simplifies this process, but as I said before, happiness is not complete. Many sites of the allowed domains include links to other domains, so it began to skip the authentication dialog to users in an intrusive way.

Again I checked the service configuration again in this case SQUID3 and to my surprise it was a line that denied those users just before the http_access deny allIf I only allowed him to navigate in certain domains because Zentyal added a line to deny the group to which those users belonged? Good question but I don't really know the answer and what frustrated me for a moment was that Zentyal's template system couldn't help me.

And where was the solution? Where else, in the same Zentyal documentation. In the section "Advanced customization of services", it is explained how to execute scripts during the process of applying the changes in the configuration of the services.

There are 6 entry points for the execution of these scripts also known as hooks. Two of them are general and the other four are per module: Before saving changes, after saving changes, before saving the configuration of a module, after saving the configuration of a module, before restarting the service and after restarting the service.

Zentyal provides a group of templates for creating these hooks which are basically bash scripts. Well with the help of the command BUT and the use of hooks before starting the navigation service eliminates the unnecessary line, and then starts the service, disappearing the intrusion of the authentication dialog in users where their navigation is limited to a group of domains.

Well now, I did not have any more setbacks and only small adjustments remained that through the administration interface is a matter of a few clicks and everything is done. My conclusions and recommendations will not be so extensive, rather I want to touch points that are not normally touched.

  1. First of all, Zentyal as a solution is mature and stable in all senses and in continuous development, which is why it is viable in our companies and institutions.
  2. A great advantage is that a single CD we have everything we need and what is missing according to our needs, it will be enough to add the Ubuntu repository and that's it.
  3. The template system is not a disadvantage, on the contrary if we use it together with the hooks we have a complete combination and it does not generate dirty configuration files, on the contrary they can be used as a reference in other systems.
  4. The administrator's work is simplified considerably, allowing him to concentrate on more specific tasks.
  5. It does not deprive you of the knowledge and use of the console at all when using the administrative interface, it is just another utility of the system, being able to fully exploit the possibilities of the console (own experience).

So far my experience, although short in time, has been beneficial, so I wanted to share it with you. Shortly, small tips for the deployment of other applications and services in Zentyal.

It is true that many prefer to assemble everything by hand for greater control, but the great advantage of Zentyal over others is that it offers you comfort and ease maintaining the structure of the configuration files as if we had installed it by hand.

The two times we wanted to test Zentyal's performance to do something similar to what you needed, it happened to us that the server crashed after a few days or that CUPS began to fail, or SAMBA3 worked erratically, a shame because as you say the graphic control panel is complete and quite comfortable.

They finally ended up using openSUSE although I remember there were problems when updating to the new version.

    Interesting experience, greetings!

Well, I can't talk much about Zentyal 2 (I guess because you're talking about Samba 3), my experience with it is little, Elav does have more experience and in an environment managing around 800 users at a time, but without any Samba. Now Zentyal 3 is another matter, the change to Samba 4 was radical and they stopped using PostgreSQL for MySQL, which increased speed and decreased consumption.

Thank you very much for the article, I ruined myself buying a server to share files, torrent, virtual pc, etc ... and learn to manage linux as an administrator. I thought about installing the ubuntu server "bareback" but I think I'll start with zentyal, which by the way, version 3.2 is released on September 19.

    Greetings.

    1.    alaintm said

Zentyal is a good alternative, in fact for me the most complete and the best thing as I mentioned in the post is that it respects the configuration files, which by the way even serve as a reference and with respect to 3.2 I am expecting it as a good thing.

Excellent article, I am testing Zentyal to implement it in our network as well. I know there is an official forum, but I found that many unresolved medium complex threads still go to the point where they propose you to buy a subscription.

I understand the motivation of the company for this and it would seem like a netiquette to try to continue with the thread once the question of paid support has been raised; but…

Wouldn't you be interested in participating in a google group to comment on the experiences? I am asking you because I see that you are actively working on customizing zentyal, something that we are working heavily on now (for example, I am seeing the way to "turn off" all the infra of zentyal and leave only the settings active, I think That can be done in a simple way - deactivating the service perhaps - or else it will require some fiddling with the pre and post application configuration scripts, etc. etc.

Please, tell me what you think of the group's idea, if not you can write me down as a contact of interest for Zentyal-related issues, I would have no problem collaborating to solve problems or see advanced customizations.

    Balances.

I thank you for the comment and with respect to the group I see it as a good idea, it is true that in the forum there are problems in many cases without a solution and somewhat they seek you to use the paid versions. I already have you in my contacts.

Regarding minimal Zentyal installations, you can install only the necessary components on a minimal Ubuntu LTS and then add those that are required later, directly from the repositories.

    Here is the detailed explanation:
    http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community/Installation/InstallationGuide?redirectedfrom=Document/Documentation/InstallationGuide

Here are the repositories for the different versions of Zentyal:
    http://ppa.launchpad.net/zentyal/

After adding the Zentyal repository of the searched version and updating the sources (apt-get update), you can see what packages are available with:

    dpkg -l | grep -i zentyal

and here is the explanation of the different packages available:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/zentyal.html

    1.    Iaco said

Errata: "you can see what packages are available with:"

You can see the components installed in the system with:
      dpkg -l | grep -i zentyal

To see the components available in the repository:
      apt-cache search zentyal | more

Interestingly, in version 2 it gave the possibility to select the services to be used from the installation, but in version 3 this is no longer the case.

I tried it in its day but for the purposes for which I used it I was not able to put it how I wanted. Now I am using ClearOs with great results, and much easier to configure.

    1.    alaintm said

When I explained in the post about the choice of Zentyal ClearOS it had been one of the possibilities, but the truth is that I did not feel comfortable because of the enormous dependence on the Internet from installation to start-up.

Very good post, thank you very much for sharing your experience.
I have been looking at Zentyal for about three years now and with your experience you have motivated me to implement it, and I would like you to support me with your recommendation or advice regarding my implementation.
What characteristics should my server have (processor, RAM memory, etc.) to implement it in a network for 60 users? taking into account the following services:
    Domain Server
    File Sharing
    Instant messaging
    In Short Future Email Server
    Printer Sharing

these would be the main services.

I really appreciate your suggestions. Greetings.

    Hello alaintm,

I work in an institute with about 500 students who connect with their own laptops. I'm going head first with the Internet connection, because despite having 100Mbps output, at certain times it collapses.

I've been looking at some UTMs (SonicWall, Cyberoam ...), but the budgets they give me are around € 4000, to which we must add inexpensive annual licenses.

    I "only" need 3 things:
    · Control that the bandwidth is distributed equitably and that no user manages to crash the connection due to abusive use.
    · Filter web addresses (and programs that try to bypass filters, for example Ultrasurf).
    · Cut Internet access to download programs (or limit their bandwidth).

All this must be transparent to users: they should not configure anything on their equipment, nor should they notice any additional delay.

Do you know if I could get it with Zentyal? If not, do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks for your time

      Hello Positron

I have a similar problem, but with a 10Mbps ADSL. Zentyal seems too heavy for these tasks, if you do not intend to set up a domain or file and printer server… It is not your solution.
I have tried with Proxy / firewall type Endian, IPCop and pFSense with irregular results: Just by putting the firewall everything improves, because the router no longer crashes with so many connections. But the moment I activate the proxy everything goes much slower, and it should be the opposite! And if you try to filter URLs, I won't even tell you. My idea was for the proxy to use username / password authentication to control where they browse, but I'm scared of performance. Maybe it's because my machine is limited in resources for the users I have, I don't know (about 60-70 simultaneous)
Did you find a valid solution? How do you do it now?

      regards

        Hello Jesus,

Finally with Zentyal. All the requirements that had been fulfilled. We have been there for a couple of months and without any problem.

Initially, the server machine would crash, but I changed the network card for a professional one and increased the RAM to 8GB. Of the initial budget of about € 3000 (for the first year) that they asked us to about € 600 that we have invested, it is not, nothing, but not bad.

Answering my questions, yes, it is totally possible. Although I recommend that you have some basic notions of Linux if you want to solve any problems that may arise.

From my experience, the problem could be the machine, it is important to invest a little in it.

        regards

Hello Sergio. Interesting your case. As of today, what are you using? We have been using zentyal for about two years for an SME, and the truth is interesting, but in the part of emails the control of spam and others is very limited.
How do you handle yourself today? Are you still with Zentyal? The limitations that they placed on your system, I imagine they did it on the direct linux, skipping the zentyal, right?
          regards

A little over 1 year ago I installed Zentyal in order to use Zarafa, but it was a disaster because Zarafa made the server terribly slow and stopped hanging. In the end I ended up installing SME Server.

It seems to me that my problem was due to the intensive use of MySQL that Zarafa had. Have they solved this?

Hello, for the time of work in tests that the work already takes, if you have an approximate technical certainty that it is possible to carry out the task and if at this point you could not define a technical change plan - step by step - to implement Zentyal, I would say that it is time to hire support, official if possible.

The course of action that I recommend would be to raise the current scenario, the desired scenario, and contact the Zentyal people, ask them if it is possible to reach the desired scenario based on the current status and then, if they could provide direct technical support (not turnkey hand), to answer technical questions / questions that may arise during migration. If the answer is positive, the next step would be to purchase a Zentyal support package that provides the requested support features.

An alternative would be to hire 3rd party support. who have had similar technical experiences.

They advise me to do the manual configuration of squid but I don't want to miss out on the benefits that Sentyal apparently offers. Very Good the post. Too bad I no longer use Zentyal. I tried all artica, pfsense, zentyal, zeroshell, etc etc, and honestly the one that I liked the most is gateproxy, which is an installation script unlike the others that are distros. It is for ubuntu 14 lts (before it was compatible with debian but they retired the support I don't know why). What I liked the most is that it comes preconfigured ready to work. The proxy is very good. It has hex filtering (which none of the others have) to block ultrasurf and those little proxy programs and it comes with a blacklist of millions of blocked sites.
It is missing some things like IDS / IPS (but in the tutorial they say that it can be integrated), the post manager is installed but it is not parameterized (in the tutorial they do not give it priority), it is managed with webmin (which is very good, for monitoring it has sarg, sqstat and ntop-ng, the security is superior to zentyal, and that is the alpha version, the support is very good, fast and free on its website (its page is gateproxy.com but it is hosted within maravento.com)… anyway, I've been working with gateproxy for several months, I think it's excellent. I recommend it, especially for those of us who like to learn during the installation process and know what happens and not have everything delivered to us on a silver platter, without knowing what it contains or how it works internally.

Hello Alaintm, congratulations for these comments that, as you indicate, are not frequent; but they are very necessary since we face these problems every day. Although I am not a professional in the systems area, I am in love with free software and applications. I have administrative responsibilities in a micro company and I use Zentyal 3.5 as a front end. Behind I want to put Dolibarr as CRM and OpenKM as documentation manager. Therefore I am waiting for your articles. Today I have many things that I still do not understand, Thank you

    Alaintm:
Your post is very interesting for those of us who are starting to implement Zentyal.
I am implementing Zentyal 4.1 and I don't see how to force domain users to change their passwords. How do I set the password policy in the Zentyal domain?
I have seen the templates, specifically the one in usr / share / zentyal / stubs / samba / acc-zentyal.mas but I don't dare to modify anything about it.

Can you help me on this? Or any other partner.

    Regards,

    Guille

I am using Zentyal 4.0, when I implement the Proxy (Not Transparent), I find the problem that when creating access rules based on User Groups, it does not allow navigation, it gives me the error «The proxy server is rejecting connections "Now the groups are of type" Security ", a friend told me it had to be of type" Distribution ", but when I create them in this way the rules do not see the type of distribution group. And when I put it for objects it works perfectly.

Any idea of the problem? Thank you..

excellent pos, I knew it and had used it, just as a firewall, now that I started using it to share folders and centralize user login. everything is hairy. but a problem arose, and that is where I need your support, which I read for the following.
It will be my file server, and perfect, in another linux I have it as a backup server, I use rsync and perfect.
When entering as from the console as administrator, you do not have permissions on the user folders.
when reviewing the users from the console there is only that one.

How do I login from the console as domain administrator, or from rsync, using the administrator of the active directory to have access to all shared folders

Hi everyone, I'm using zentyal as a mail server but since there are many power outages in my country, it tends to fail a lot. Do you recommend any other mail server which is stronger to power outages? Greetings.
