New topic for the blog, definitive or not? We will see

As many have evidently been able to observe, today I dressed our beloved WordPress with a new gala dress and I must say, I was surprised by the good reception it has had. Was the previous design really so ugly? I'm sure the problem is that everyone (or almost everyone) always likes the new.

Actually my intention was to put it temporarily to receive criticism, suggestions and opinions from users, because when working locally, apparently everything works fine and that unfortunately is a mistake.

Indeed, more than suggestions I have even received direct help from Twitter to improve the appearance of the site and the code of the new theme. From here my thanks for: @ MatiSanchez25, @SapphireGD, @Peper_Ion and in general to all those who came to comment and contribute good ideas. We have even had risky BetaTesters like @andres_auros who sent us proof of it:

New theme tested

What news does this new theme bring?

I start by saying that I am not a designer or anything like that, rather I like to follow trends and be inspired by many great sites that are on the web. Whenever I finish a job I think it could have been better, but if I don't go further, it is simply because I think that my knowledge will not be enough to be able to do the subject myself, and therefore I would have to depend on people who know more than me; I don't know about you but I respect the time of others very much.

But let's get down to business. More than a new topic, I call this new look a facelift. I mean, I have taken some good things from the previous designs and improved or arranged them differently. We continue to maintain the 3-column structure on the main page, but the sidebar returns to one of them.

For example, the navigation bar is now in the same site header, and the elements are more organized by theme. The space that was previously occupied by the navigation bar is now occupied by the Featured Posts section, which loses the thumbnail image in pos view at a higher speed, and now only shows the title of the article and the author.

new topic

This changes when we access an article, since the Featured will no longer be displayed, but the title of the article in question:

New topic3

The other change I made that is apparently not noticeable in this new theme is the social icons on the sidebar. Actually they are the same, but now in addition to showing our statistics on social networks, they have the links that lead to them. These links used to be in the footer of the site and no longer.

New topic1

Of course, now the cards are displayed differently and here I would like to clarify something. On Twitter they asked me or rather they suggested that I return to put the effect that the previous topic had, that is, that when the cursor was placed on the highlighted image, an extract of the article would be displayed.

The problem that this system has (or had) was that when we used a pointer, that is, the mouse, everything was very nice, but in the mobile version that did not work as expected. Now the posts are shown in a more classic way -maybe- but we know it will work on any resolution or device.

New topic2

Already in the article we find the title at the top followed by some information of interest, author information, the date and others. I need to put the amount that the post has been read:

New topic4

At the end of the post we find an area that still does not have all its space occupied and for now, we will only find some social links to share the article:

New topic5

The other novelty comes in the comments, which are now slightly different and a number is added that is not working as expected. Why? Because my idea was that it was the real number of the comment, that is, regardless of which user it was answered, the number would mark if your comment was 20 or 80. For now what it does is count the number of comments written, without import the order.

New topic6

If we have the proper permissions, we can edit the post and if they notice, the tag that marks the rank of the commenter is also missing, because it will be implemented but in a different way. MUAJAJAJAJAAJA «Malicious plan on the way.

Finally note that we change the default font -now we use Roboto- but in general we keep the same structure, the same colors so that the change is not so abrupt. So what remains to be done is:

To do

  1. Correct the errors that users report.
  2. When everything is correct, compress the CSS files and so on.
  3. Add the details I mentioned above.

And I think that's it. Usually everyone (or most) liked the theme, so there is not much to add. Any questions, complaints or suggestions can be left in the comments.

It's excellent… they always look good, but I have two suggestions.

    1) I miss the banner above that showed the recommended posts, I think the title is not enough .. You almost always overlook it ..

    2) It is not quite like having to go to the panel to log in, and there are problems with cache because until I give f5 it does not show me logged in. But in the panel it does.

    Regards..!!

Thanks for the suggestions. The thing about featured articles is that they are topics that we believe will be of interest to users, but they don't have to take center stage from the blog. The other thing you comment is the problem of the cache plugin that we use on the blog 🙁

      1.    Manual of the Source said

The detail with the previous featured posts widget is that it was too big, but I don't see a problem in bringing it back in a smaller version; not like the current one but with its respective featured image and post excerpt. As long as it didn't occupy more than 100-150 pixels in height, it would be fine.

LOL!! What's up!! The previous topic was not ugly at all, maybe a bit saturated with info, but it wasn't ugly.

I liked this topic, simpler, important because I generally read them from my mobile, where saving each KB is important.

Elav, my sincere congratulations and in general to the team, always pleasantly surprising with all the changes they make to the site and more importantly, with everything they contribute to the knowledge of the SL.

    Greetings.

Honestly, I don't like it very much. It looks like it's made for tablets or those modern phones.
I thought it had been the new FF that changed the configuration =) I am half an ass with these new technologies.
Actually, I don't know why, I like old things better. But that's the way the world is always turning forward by luck. Regards.
PS: I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but when I log in and enter the post, I don't appear as a user, that is, it asks for my name and email. I enter from the panel where it says visit site and even there fine but in the post it does not recognize me.

Hi, I liked it, it's not that I'm a designer, but it's exactly what I thought would be good to do to the site, the top bar with the drop-down menus was a "must-have" (essential) for me. easy to find everything, makes it easier and less messy.
The numbered comments also liked me, although I think they have too much separation and the new fonts and boxes like I did not like them very much.

    1.    joakoej said

As we are, some suggestions that come to mind would be:
      1. put the browser and operating system data back next to the username.
      2. That the comment number does not overlap with the text
      3. Change the fonts in the menu bar, they all look very ugly.
      4. I also did not like the new title of the posts, the one from before was fine, or at least make it light blue again.
      5. Each comment takes up too much space (I already said it)
      6. I would order the menus that appear on the side (Social Networks, Control Panel, Recent Comments, etc.) in another way. I would put them in this order, from top to bottom: Control Panel, Archive, Recent Comments, Donations, Advertising, Social Networks
I mean, I would put the most referring to what the user can do in the blog above and the contacts and advertising below, it is not like I will follow them on Facebook or Twitter to see that above everything whenever they entered, I want to enter and see recent comments or the file, which, in fact, I didn't even know existed and it's nice to have

      1.    joakoej said

        7. That the menu bar is displayed automatically, without the need to click
        8. The comment box to be white again, or always black, because it is strange that when you click outside of it it turns white.
        9. Make the lines that separate each comment more visible, now they have a very faint gray color and with the white background they are hardly visible.

  9.   rotietip said

1- I liked that the text was displayed when the cursor was left over the image of a post, although I always found little that could be read from there (due to the size of the image), I think it would be better if they returned to put the first paragraphs of the article below the corresponding image.
2- It is a great loss to me that they have taken the extract of the featured post (precisely what made me read one of those complete posts depended on whether the first lines caught my attention).
3- Few posts appear per page (they should appear at least 10 or 20 since it is very annoying to be reviewing 2 or 3 pages just to see a post from last week).
4- The gray tones are horrible (such as the date or the comment number). Seriously, every time I come across sites like this I suspect an emo was playing the CSS.
5- Why now the browser and operating system of those who comment appear below and not next to the name as before? I don't even see any sense of that change but if they are going to leave it like this at least they could make the icons bigger or convert them into text.
6- The comment box is unnecessarily smaller than before (I know I can stretch it at ease, but not all browsers have that possibility).
To fix the first three points (and by the way, not touch the eggs so much when removing more things), wouldn't it be better to make a differentiated design and load one or another thing depending on whether it is entered from the desktop or a mobile system? It also can't be that difficult to filter from the useragent.
Even so, the sidebar seemed like a good detail and that the content occupies the entire length of the window.

    1.    elav said

I explained point 1 in the post. Point 2 can be assessed. Point 3 is not a problem, as long as the rest of the users agree. Point 4, maybe a matter of taste, and something that can be changed but we cannot be well with everyone. Regarding point 5, I made an arrangement that maybe you like, maybe not. And on point 6 because I think it is already solved.

      regards

      1.    Manual of the Source said

I would prefer the user agent icons next to the commenter's name as they were before, and the comment number in the place where the icons are now.

The theme reminds me of what a fan of Arch Linux you are (it's the first thing that came to mind, to be honest).

The current DL theme is the perfect amalgamation between the previous two themes and the pre-merge theme with Let's Use Linux (although more of the pre-UL theme, which I liked more than the post-UL theme).

And by the way, I congratulate KZKG ~ Gaara for his mastery of NGINX, to such a degree that they can afford to continue using the JetPack.

In my opinion, I liked it, although a lot of padding is used in the comments, 10px is much to my liking, as well as taking up a lot of space from the comment number, I have to use the scroll more only to read 3 comments (1366 × 768). Something more compact would allow you to read more comments in less space, it just takes getting used to it.

The new design is better because it gives importance to social networks, which will revert to your benefit. Aesthetically I don't know which one to choose, both (this one and the previous one) are very good.

    Congratulations.

In particular, I liked the previous topic more, I think I was already used to a certain order in my visualization of the page.
Meanwhile this new topic is not bad, what most caught my attention was the nice Penguin who says "Start" hahahaha

  18.   sirMvM said

I just added that I still lack the banner with the featured topics as a previous user mentioned and I also don't know why I feel the need for an icon in the top black bar that redirects us to the home page of desdelinux.net

  19.   Omar said

I think the change is great, but as they say, everyone will never like it, here are my comments:

1.- They should have more posts per page.
2.- Comments take up too much space.

But after a few days we will get used to this new topic.

I don't like it, I prefer the previous one, it had more quality, this one looks like the classic Blocks with its famous Sidebar on the right. I don't see a job for him. The menu bar I feel is left over in that header, I would prefer that only the search engine would be there (like the previous one), there it looked excellent when you give it the cic and you get an animation.

Do not be offended men but as you are missing something inspiration :(. Instead of an advance for the template it was like a setback in the graphic aspect. What are the implementations for the comments I see it excellent. I will omit the design of the blog when I have than to check the publications, it is the most important thing, right?

    1.    elav said

Well, that's the idea, to go back to the philosophy of a blog, because this is precisely that. If I don't put the menu in the header, where do I put it?

I am not offended at all, it is your opinion and I respect it. I didn't really want to make a super change, far from it, just to refresh the topic that was already there. 😉

I liked the previous one better, but it's just a matter of taste, this one isn't so bad either.

What I liked least about the other remains, which are the very large and redundant social media banners at the bottom of the page.

Great because you could take advantage of that space above, and not have eliminated the recommended posts, (you could even put a slider to show more than one), and redundant because if the links of social networks and subscriptions are already the first thing to the right, I do not understand that they also paint at the bottom.

    Greetings.

    1.    Manual of the Source said

I really do not find any use for that footer. It was useful when the sidebar was not showing on the main page, but now that it does it could be completely removed.

      1.    Devil's lawyer said

Of course it is useless, and also takes up a huge space. I do not know what others will think, but the recommended posts that were seen before, helped and find interesting articles, and I used them a lot.

This alternative of putting only the title, without any image, does not have the same effect. I would enhance that area, putting as I said an automatic slider, even if it was smaller and narrower, which would greatly increase that function.

        1.    elav said

There are two problems with this:

1- That footer is at Pablo's request (let's use linux). If he agrees to remove it, then it is removed.
2- We not only think of those who have enormous bandwidth, we also do it for those who have little, therefore, loading the site with so many images also influences SEO, affects Cubans for example. You have to think of all of them.

          1.    Devil's lawyer said

Hi Elav. I understand what you are saying, but you should think about how to enhance the featured posts, because the truth is that, with text, they only go quite unnoticed, (especially to someone who accesses the blog for the first time), and I think it's a shame .

As for the footer banners, perhaps there may be an alternative that Pablo approves if they are set up as a tabbed menu. Something like they have them in this blog for example:

            http://www.ubuntuleon.com/

They are other alternatives that occur to me. A greeting.

I like how the new theme turned out, the only thing I would change would be:
1.The space between comments is too much and space is wasted.
    2. Change the fonts on the menu bar, they all look very ugly.
    3. The menus that appear on the side (Social Networks, Control Panel, Recent Comments, etc). In this order, from top to bottom: Control Panel, Archive, Recent Comments, Donations, Advertising, Social Networks.
    Otherwise, all good. Regards.

I hardly saw the new style, I got scared, I disliked it and I got sad .. TT

After a while, I started to get used to it ... ... I like the style, the font changes, the comment box, the fact that the starting penguin has returned, among other things ...

Things I would like to change: to return the fields to enter username and password directly in the sidebar, instead of having to enter the control panel. And in what I believe several of us agree, that there are more entries on the main page (and in my opinion it is much better when there are 3 rows of posts) and that the comments are smaller in the style of the previous topic, instead of the current ones giant framed.

For the rest, great .. ..Congrats for the work, never stagnant, always improving;) ..

    Hi. I leave my criticisms:

1- I got lost with the login, before it was more accessible. Also when I log in, it does not redirect me to the post where I was.

2- As others commented, I would like the menus to be collapsible when you point them with the cursor.

3- It seems to me that featured posts should be "featured." Perhaps an option would be that as they are now (title of featured post »author) they move slowly from right to left (like rss). But it has to be very subtle so as not to disturb.

Otherwise I think it's going well. Let's hope how it evolves these days.
