New changes to the commenting system

New changes to the commenting system

We have implemented new features in the commenting system to improve the user experience on our blog.

The changes are simple:

We have placed the response form on the comments and at the end of it. This way, if you want to comment after reading the post, you don't have to go to the bottom of the page.

The other change has to do with the limit of comments displayed on an article. Now only 15 comments will be displayed by default, and if the post exceeds this figure, then the links to the following comments will appear.

Both features are seen in the following image:

Comments

Another of the proposals that we are analyzing is to put the new comments first, leaving the older ones for last, but I am not particularly convinced of this. So we await your opinions.

Very nice change. As for seeing the new comments first, I think the first 15 should be seen. Since many times it is necessary to have read the previous comments to be able to follow the thread of the conversation of the last ones. Keep up the good work, you are doing a great job with the blog.

    1.    let's use linux said

Exact! With the old system the thread was easily lost. Especially in posts with more than 100 comments (something more and more common, especially after the merger between DL and UL).
      Cheers! Paul.

At the very least, it's a bit simpler than the Disqus system, although it makes me dizzy to have two comment boxes. I would suggest that they keep the comment box at the top as going to the bottom of comments to comment is a tremendous bummer.

  2.   diazepam said

    Indeed, there are 2 forms.

    1.    elav said

Well yes, one at the beginning and one at the end, and depending on the situation you use one or the other.

      1.    cat said

I think there should be only the beginning, the end is over. Total, if someone goes down to the comments, it is either to read them or to respond to them, and when responding a third form opens.

        1.    let's use linux said

          THANKS!
It's been like 3 weeks since I've been breaking the bald's patience for us to make this change. Precisely, I also think that the bottom one is superfluous because people who "scrolling" tend to "respond" to someone else's comments.

          1.    José Torres said

I think the same, and by the same logic. If you are going to comment on the article, you do so before reading the comments, and if you read the comments, respond to them.

        2.    eliotime3000 said

Completely agree with you, @gato. Also, I think that the box at the end should be optional so that it does not bother the view.

        3.    elav said

Ready. I already deleted the last form.

          1.    cat said

            I think it's great.

          2.    let's use linux said

Good! All that remains is for the last 15 comments to appear at the beginning. I think that now they appear well ordered (the last, first) but you do not see 15 but less ... could it be?

            1.    elav said

I don't think it's a good idea. Many users agree that putting the last first would create confusion by trying to follow a logical order in the comments. Let's wait for more opinions and if we do not reach a consensus then we will do a survey.

  3.   FIXOCONN said

I'm fine with the last comments coming first

    1.    let's use linux said

      That's right ... I also agree ...

    2.    let's use linux said

Especially if the comments are divided by 15 because if the last ones continue to appear at the end, you will have to navigate several pages to see them. On the other hand, if they are put at the beginning, that problem would be solved.

  4.   jamin samuel said

This is getting to be done 😀

MISSING one more thing ... Enlarge the size of the letters of the comments and make it the same size as the content of the post

Did I make myself understood? The post has a font size, the comments are smaller, equal that

    1.    elav said

I don't feel like doing that. It can be enlarged a bit, but not the size of the letters in the post, as a long comment would take up too much space.

    2.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Here is a screenshot of how the size of the letters looks with me, I don't really see that there are problems 😀

      1.    elav said

It is that bigger !! Uff .. We always have the option of Ctrl + ++

  5.   eliotime3000 said

Very good proposal, but having two boxes to comment seems crazy to me. As long as the top box is visible and the bottom box is enough to be given a button that says "comment" to activate it, it is more than enough.

  6.   darkar said

    wow very good change

  7.   Black Net said

Definitely, putting the new comments would make it difficult to follow the logical thread of them. In particular, I prefer that all the comments are displayed, one already decides if one or the other is skipped, however I understand the position of the 15 comments, if it is a matter of voting ... I prefer that the first 15 appear ... greetings

    1.    elav said

      I have the same opinion .. U_U

  8.   giskard said

And when is the Preview and an editing toolbar for? Or is that out of project?

    1.    elav said

The idea is not bad. You have to see if any plugin does it 😉

      1.    giskard said

😀 Hopefully. It would be great.

  9.   elav said

It seems to me that the paging of comments does not work due to the plugin we are using to put the comments at the moment .. 🙁

    1.    elav said

Mmm how strange, in other articles if it works .. What witchcraft is this?

      1.    DCOY said

        xD no then yes ...

I am of the opinion to keep the comments in chronological order, showing the top 15, otherwise; that is, if you show them in reverse order with the most recent ones first, you run the risk of making repetitive comments because you have not read those that gave rise to the following. Maintaining the current ordering helps to keep the thread of the "conversation" and not having to skip around to find where a discussion or approach begins. As for the location of the form, its location is indifferent to me, in any case, if you are going to respond to a comment, a form is opened and that is enough.

    1.    Percaff_TI99 said

I agree with you, with this change I think the fluidity of the comments would be lost.

  11.   isaac said

Here the comments do not appear: /

  12.   elendilnarsil said

Personally, that last option I have never liked. I think someone could lose the thread of a conversation. Otherwise, the changes seem right to me.

  13.   nosferatuxx said

    It's getting better all the time… !!!!

  14.   xino93 said

    don't change it, that's fine.

  15.   Angel_Le_Blanc said

I wish there had remained two, although I am a minority. Now I had to go up here to comment.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

But having two forms really tides. It would be more comfortable to have the upper part activated, and the lower part, which is optional for one to activate it in case you feel comfortable.

  16.   Cost Granda said

That of the first new comments does not convince me much, it would be good but if said comments had some rating to deserve to be first, I just say: p

    1.    kutxo said

I think it is a good idea to do the new comments first, if there are many comments, nobody gets to read the last ones, but if it is done chronologically (new at the beginning), the one who commented first there are many that, although it is at the end , they have already read it. Not to mention that the last comment can offer more up-to-date information and would appear at a point where more people can read it.

From my point of view it balances the situation better, yes, responses to comments must be made as before, to continue the dialogue.

By the way, fantastic blog. Cheers

  17.   nerjamartin said

Hi, I think it's a good idea to just leave the box to answer at the beginning, but add a button at the end to comment without having to go up to the box.
Ah !! and I am also in favor of leaving the comments in chronological order, so the dynamics of the conversation are followed much better.

I love that you take the opinions of users into account so much 🙂 a 10 for <"DesdeLinux!!!! 🙂

    1.    nerjamartin said

Ah !! and I comment from work, for that reason having the "unnameable" as SO hahaha 🙂 don't think badly !!!

  18.   kutxo said

Because my email is yopmail my comment is useless. The important thing is the idea, not the email. Absurd.

    1.    kutxo said

Apologies for my previous comment, I made the wrong blog and I thought they had deleted it. Sorry, bad day.

  19.   auroszx said

I like the idea of duplicating the comment form, very handy. But I hope that if comments are paginated, the oldest ones will be shown first (that is, the first ones that were posted).
Generally, the most interesting discussions take place between the first comments and I am one of those who would not want to miss them

  20.   k1000 said

Hi. If they are going to hide comments, it seems to me better to hide the last ones since they are the ones that least complement the idea since many things have been said before. (Except for this comment that does contribute my opinion XD)

  21.   majority said

I did not like the idea since I lose the sequence of reading the first messages I prefer to read one by one as I was before

  22.   Joaquin said

Hi. I agree with several in leaving the first comments at the beginning, because it allows us to see a complete conversation. If there are people who are not interested in reading the conversation, they should only comment, although I think it is a bit risky because there can be very similar comments. On the other hand, «kutxo» has an interesting point of view: «I think it is a good idea to do the new comments first, if there are many comments, nobody gets to read them last, but if it is done chronologically beginning), the one who commented first, there are many who, although it is at the end, have already read it. Not to mention that the last comment can offer more up-to-date information and would appear at a point where more people can read it. "

I am one of those who reads all or almost all the comments, because interesting debates arise that contribute to the post, make it more interesting.

  23.   jony127 said

Good, the comments must follow a chronological order, first the first comments must appear worth the redundancy and then the most recent ones continue simply because many of the comments are discussions generated by the previous ones and then, would you have to read the other way around?

In addition to showing 15 comments and having to be clicking on previous comments and recent comments because it makes me get lost, I see it confusing and on top of it hinders navigation. If they want to do it like this, they must create a kind of pagination like Google does when it shows you many pages of a search, so it is simpler, more intuitive and organized.

Right now I don't like the system they are using at all, it is not comfortable and I find it confusing.

    Greetings.

    1.    Hugo said

I agree with the other colleagues that it is better to avoid top-posting because although that way the last comments can be seen more clearly, the logical order is lost. Now, if there was an option that would allow SWITCHING between one type of view or another (and perhaps even save it in the user's preferences), everyone would be happy and would eat partridges.

By the way, I also think that if you want to separate the comments by page, a pager is necessary, to get an idea of how many there are, and to be able to go more quickly to the first page, the last page, or to any intermediate page.
