openarena (for those who do not know) is a free game of the genre First Person Shooter (we go, FPS), clone of Quake III Arena, which uses the engine of this released long ago by ID Software and used by other games (such as Urban terror o Warsaw)
In the server, in addition to some maps that come with the game, we have included 4 new maps, although we intend to replace some more to have more varied maps. The 4 maps are ports of several of the most popular and played maps of Counter Strike: Dust2, Assault, Italy and Pool (You will find them with the names of oxomd1, oxodm3, oxodm4 and oxodm13 respectively, things of the author).
The game mode is free for all (all against all) although we are thinking of changing it to Team Deathmach or Capture the Flag.
Installing OpenArena:
Most distributions have OpenArena packages in their repositories, so it will be enough to use the package manager of our system:
archlinux:
pacman -S openarena
Debian / Mint / Ubuntu:
apt-get install openarena
If our distro does not have packages for the game, we can download it from its Web page
Setting up:
Once the game is installed or downloaded, we run the game and select Setup to configure it. Of all of them we focus on Game Options by selecting Automatic Downloading to activate it. With this we tell the game to download the maps that we do not have saved, although it can be done manually if your connection is slow or you want to download them before playing (at the end of the entry I will put the links).
Once everything is configured we go to Multiplayer and at the bottom of the screen click on Specify and on Address we put the following
openarena.desdelinux.net
and click on Fight. If everything is correct, the game connects and we can play.
The server is configured to support players who have a ping equal to or less than 350ms, so if your ping exceeds this number you will not be able to enter (with more ping, your movements will be slower and sometimes it will freeze).
Now, if we want, we can add a launcher that starts the game and connects automatically.
For this we will put the following line where it corresponds:
openarena +exec autoexec +connect openarena.desdelinux.net
If you downloaded OpenArena from its page, only change openarena for the path to the executable.
And that's all. I leave you with the links to the maps and the entry created in the forum so that you can comment on the server, suggest maps, links to the maps that we upload, etc, also on the blog, on the right you can see a widget that shows the Server status, so you will know if it is online, what map is being played, if there are people playing, etc.

This game mode is very typical, as they say out there for a fun time. Well in my opinion it would be more interesting if it had a system of levels to which it would be read more weapons, doing missions or but also buying with real money, as well as F2P games (free to play).

OpenArena does not support any of that, also we all know what happens with the F2P: those who have pelas (or whose parents allow everything) and spend hours and hours and hours and hours (and thus a good time) ALWAYS go to have an advantage over those who cannot spend so much time, do not have as much money or cannot because they cannot use any payment system.
I know what that is because I have played and I have left them, except for Quake Live since the paid one only adds maps, exclusive characters and a couple of other things.
I think the same as Son_Link, the ideal is that we are all on an equal footing without counting the money that can be spent or the time that can be spent glued to the screen. If we began to divide the types of players the thing would lose its grace.
Although it is true that it would be fun to organize a tournament «desdeLinux» whether by teams or deathmatch or flag…
