Opera 10.53 Beta available for Linux and FreeBSD

At the beginning of the year, Opera released the new version, 10.5x, of its web browser, but initially only for Windows. Then the Mac version followed, and The first days of this month, it released version 10.53 in Beta state for Linux and FreeBSD.

Several are the improvements that this new version presents, such as: greater integration with the Gnome and KDE desktops, support for various distributions; no more dependency on Qt libraries, since integration is done through Gnome / Gtk and KDE libraries; more agile navigation with the new Carakan JavaScript engine; private browsing through the integration of tabs that delete history; possibility to control views by zooming, etc.

Why try this new "beta" version?

If we consider that the latest version available was 10.10, the changes are significant:

  • Navigation 8 times faster than with the previous version thanks to the new Carakan JavaScript engine and Vega graphics library.
  • Private browsing mode, popularly known as "porn mode", allowing the user to navigate in another tab without leaving traces of their steps.
  • Easy viewing control with the new zoom tool located in the lower right corner.
  • Improved and much more stylized interface, includes the "O" menu that allows access to the functions previously located in the menu bar, or if you prefer it is very easy to return to the old mode.
  • No more dependency on Qt, the browser now integrates both GNOME / GTK and KDE native libraries, depending on the user's installation.
  • The well-known turbo mode that compresses web pages on slow connections like EDGE and 3G.
