OS X Mavericks is free and includes things we already had

No no, calm down, it is not my intention to build a flame, much less criticize OS X, the Operating System of Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),.

OS X

Through Twitter the compa @ yoyo308 commented something that caught my attention:

Why distros #Linux don't they make a KeyNote on every version release? it would be handsome, another way to present the news.

I think many will agree with me that GNU / Linux something is missing to be more popular: Marketing.

Si Ubuntu It is precisely the most popular distribution (not for us, but for users of other OS), it is precisely because of the tenuous Marketing campaign it has had.

This whole introduction is to make something clear, today a lot of things have been announced for OS X Mavericks We already have them on our favorite Desktops for a long time, and if they are not the same, at least very similar, and I am sure that many users do not know.

Let's see some of them and for this, I will rely on the article written in Engadget. Of course, I will mainly talk to you about what I know:

Maps

Although I have not thoroughly checked in KDE, we know that GNOME-Shell incorporates an application for Maps, from the desktop.

Calendar.

Has it eOS (simple, beautiful), and the Kontact Suite de KDE with many options and functionalities.

Keychain in iCloud.

Does anyone know KWallet? Yes, we had it for a long time, an application that allows us to centralize and control our passwords.

Multiple display management improvement.

Ok, they don't say at any point that Apple invented anything, just that it made it better, just like it has. Kubuntu y KDE with KScreen.

Notifications

The great news is that they are interactive notifications, that is, you can respond in them as in GNOME-Shell.

KDE It does not have them that way yet, but Notifications notify us (even by Applications) of everything that has happened when we are in front of the computer or not.

Tabs and labels in Finder.

File managers with tabs we have left over: Dolphin, Nautilus, Thunar, PCManFM and the use of Tags should be very similar to what we have with Dolphin + Nepomuk.

One point in favor: The update or installation is Free (Microsoft should learn) something that has amazed me greatly. I repeat, my intention is not to criticize OS XOn the contrary, I am glad that it evolves and provides a better experience for its users.

The point is to highlight that for lack of Marketing or a simple key noteMany users of other Operating Systems do not know that these News that are sold to them and inserted through their eyes as "something revolutionary" have already existed for some time.

Novell, Red Hat (although we hate it, it is much more pleasant than Apple), Cannonical, Intel, IBM, Valve and all their supporters. Take advantage of the fact that it is in full swing, because if not, it would end up as the Hurd microkernel of the FSF.

They can also be done by users with knowledge of the subject, as a collaboration. For example, recording the desktop with interesting aspects of the distro. There are tools for this in GNU / Linux. Then you can edit a video and upload it to youtube or others, as Anibal says below, showing a video from ElementaryOS

        1.    Cocolium said

The exact issue here is the scope, besides that generally the user is to have support from those who "sell" a product or in this case a distro and well, someone to follow, no?

  3.   bixo said

You could make a KeyNote or similar of the common things in all linux, such as the kernel and the most popular (or used) DEs like Gnome and KDE once a year. It would be great as a GNU / Linux promotion

It is known that Apple is a specialist in selling warm water, they put in their key notes things that existed in the market long before and the deluded believe that Apple just invented or implements them, look at the new iPad nothing new the same as always and not to mention OSX if the only thing that changes is the name of the version, put tabs to finder that I expected in the 90's now it is too late to say that this is a feature is rather a fix.

    1.    Cocolium said

One thing has to be rescued, although the new iPad is more of the same, because at least it has a reduction in thickness and weight, that has surprised me a lot, even so I would not buy it for the price and also that those devices ( those that run with iOS) I only have them if they can be jailbroken but not.

      1.    eliotime3000 said

Well, the only Apple device that I really like is the iPod Touch, since it is the only one that really uses it, and also, it seems to me that it is the most versatile Apple cuteness that I have seen and tried so far.

And by the way, the only thing I am grateful to Apple for is that it has made the Safari web rendering engine, which is wonderful if it's in good hands (thank goodness that Safari for Windows no longer exists).

And by the way, I use Opera 17. The problem is that the plugin that the blog uses confuses it with Chrome and therefore thinks I use Chrome 30.

        1.    Richard said

I think you mean Webkit ... Safari is the browser, anyway it is one of those few useful things that can be obtained from Apple as a contribution

It is indeed WebKit, but Apple was already wanting to own some of the HTML5 stuff.

            @Cocolio:

And for that reason, Google forked it and Opera took advantage of Blink and thinned it, as well as leaving the browser without Opera Link and it is barely available for Windows and OSX.

  5.   pandev92 said

Normal that the update is free, osx launches a new version every year and a half, and above with so little news, and also the programs stop working in the previous versions that, it would only be missing that they rob you.
I want to remember that most of the programs that run on windows 7 continue to run on windows xp, on the other hand, most of those that run on mountain lion do not support snow leopard.

    1.    Cocolium said

In previous "posts" we have argued arduously to the point of getting along very badly, but this time compadre I completely agree, I think there are even current programs that even still run on Windows 98 or ME (we are not going to talk about the "wonderful" which are / sarcasm OFF) but that is a job that MS has done well on the "legacy compatibility" not all of them are like that, like for example the tax program in my country, but at least there is that possibility.

Linux also has this defect, but the big difference is that any distro is free and the same can be said for the vast majority of the programs that are used.

      1.    eliotime3000 said

Well, at least in GNU / Linux, you can adapt a current distro according to the hardware you have (up to Lentium III, of course). Anyway, I understand you because that happened to me when I wanted to install an application for Android that forced me to use 4.0, so I had to resort to CyanogenMod 10.1 for my modest Samsung Galaxy Mini and finally I managed to install that damn application, and finally I managed to get it out. I take advantage of my external SD memory.

On the other hand, I see that it is quite inconvenient to have to install a Hackintosh. As cool as it looks, updates will always be a huge headache.

That is why I prefer GNU / Linux and Windows on PC's, and OSX on Macs. It is not because I am mediocre, but I do it because of the ease that both Windows (due to the professional programs that I have to use) and GNU / Linux (for those daily tasks such as surfing the Internet, programming and anything that do not bring me) requires so much video card exploitation and that suits my call calendar HP Compaq DC5770 Small from factor).

        1.    Cocolium said

And well, I already mentioned before that I had OS X installed on my HP DV6000 and if that was the headache, the EFI and other things and it is a silly effort to have an operating system that does not contribute anything new or spectacular, unless you just like pretty icons, so well I prefer to leave it with Windows 8 and then "update" it to 8.1 which unfortunately does not bring anything new.

And speaking of Android, what other ROMs would you recommend? I have the Cyanogen on my tablet, but since it is getting to my balls, I would like to try another "distro" or otherwise put Linux to see how it goes, I have read that It can.

By the calender I suppose you mean that it is an antique lol.

          1.    eliotime3000 said

What happens is that My PC in question is a 2006 Workstation, so it does not have that EFI problem and those issues.

With the CyanogenMod, I have hardly had any problems with my Galaxy Mini. If you wish, install any GNU / Linux distro that has ARM support, since Android, as a good Java pimp, will eat up your battery and will occasionally crash.

          2.    Cocolium said

I tell you that my tablet does not devour the battery che, it lasts well for me and that at night I leave a movie downloading, and it lasts about two days quietly.

The EFI thing then…. It is the only difference between PC and Mac, then, and that is installed in the root of the hard disk when you do your hackintosh, and yes, I think that more chubby I start to ask which distro suits me on my tablet or for my TV dongle I would love to put it as a NAS, torrent, LDAP and RADIUS server hehehehehe

  6.   Cocolium said

One thing is certain, Apple has not invented anything, it has simply put beautiful icons on it and has told its users that THAT is "intuitive" hahahaha, and if it is true, all and each one of the things that they have presented today as before In iOS 7, they have been used much earlier, either by third-party software or natively, as they have been in the Linux world for several years.

What is the subject of flame is: that a "keynote" should be made with each launch, because for that I suppose that first there would have to be a single Linux distro and above all a single guru that everyone supports like sheep and that is something that we don't want right?

As for Microsoft, well the difference is that they develop their own technology and I doubt that they will "give it away" just like that, something that Apple cannot say since they are the bloodsuckers of the open source community, but hey that it's just a thought, greetings.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Although I would like to browse the modus operandi of XCode and the frameworks of iOS and OSX, thanks to that I have heard out there that they have adapted the GNU IceCat browser for the OSX with just using the GNU / Linux binaries and adding some dependencies so that work in OSX as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Only because of the programming of its environment and its framework is why I would really like to try it (since the interface is somewhat confusing for me, and the keyboard is a cross for my hands).

I said Marketing and Design. Apple always takes care of AESTHETICS and design a LOT. Many may not like it, but it is so.
Before doing or copying something they go around a lot on that subject.

At least linux distros should start making a youtube video with a fancy tour to show the OS.

It is very copy of osx, but the idea is to have videos like this
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjCN_sbc1t4

    1.    Patricio arias said

Anibal: I strongly agree with your comment and watching this video makes me want to immediately format and install OS Elementary. That is what Marketing is about, about encouraging the possible consumer to obtain a product and if it is also free and free, what better? I am very happy to use Linux and sometimes I feel that the energy that I spend in spreading it sometimes is not enough, but with videos like this I think that more than a friend with a PC in trouble would like to try this or other alternatives to their Operating System of all life (with the same problems of a lifetime). Regards.

      1.    Anibal said

exact. What Apple does is generate fashion and consumption ... Many times few things change or that perhaps a change is not so necessary, however they cause the consumption of their products.

The Netcraft thing detects you up to what DNS service it uses. The domain it uses is Corporate Domains (or Corporation Service Company), but it uses the Akamai accelerator (the same one used by Facebook, Twitter and others) to avoid saturating the servers and reduce the chances of a DDoS attack.

Too bad that for natural persons, these services (Akamai, CSC, MarkMonitor), are really restricted and at least, you must be a Televisa type corporation or The Trade to enjoy their services.

It is also worth mentioning that some Gnome developers were trying to clone the AppNap functionality, but I don't know where that was. As for time coalescing, I don't know if there is something similar in Linux, it will be a matter of investigation.

Where would my dear Android be?

  14.   DanielC said

It is true that many of these features have already been in Linux for a long time, but there is a detail that I have seen that they omit: while in Linux these options appear scattered in 2-3 desktops, in OS X they are all included in one.

In KDE there is a very good kwallet and an element that stores notifications of actions and indicates the number of events that have not been attended. There is no such thing in Gnome.

In Gnome there are interactive notifications (very useful for messages, especially). Neither in KDE nor Unity exists that possibility.

In Ubuntu (Unity) you have centralized online accounts ... in Gnome too, but they don't work at all like in Ubuntu with Unity. In KDE I don't know if they have it or how it works.

    etc etc etc

That tiny great detail is what we should see instead of saying "it already existed here", when the reality is that the same thing does not exist for all desks.

By the way, the updates for users were already made in Windows, both in 8-> 8.1 and in windows phone in 7-> 8. I think those who learned there were those from Apple.

    1.    Cocolium said

The big difference in this case is that, and in reality it would be the weakness of Linux, is that in the two private or closed OS they only have a single window manager, so developers focus on a single manager, while in Linux because the thing is different.

That's called LINUX FRAGMENTATION, and that's the big problem why Linux doesn't succeed on the desktop

Will any model come out with Ubuntu or Suse pre-installed?
          Will even a reseller dare?

What is not on the shelves will hardly reach the general public

        2.    pandev92 said

Naa you're still wrong, the big problem with Linux, to this day is still great ignorance, most people do not use more than YouTube and Facebook, the desktops do not influence them.

          1.    Cocolium said

They are both right, fragmentation is a big problem, the non-standardization of packages and what Pandev92 refers to is basically the reason for the great success that tablets and smartphones have, people only go to the internet for trivialities and these devices are simply comfortable to do this.

      2.    DanielC said

Cocolio, it doesn't matter that "they" have a single desktop or window manager, because it's the same on linux.
Or do you think Gnome cares about another desktop or window manager besides its own? Or KDE, or Ubuntu on your Unity, or Lefebvre on your Cinnamon?

        1.    Cocolium said

I DO NOT understand, why developers should care about the other desktops, what I mean is that the other OS have a single manager, period, everything is developed for that manager, while in Linux developers create for their own, What if it would be good is that there is a portability so that those characteristics are available in any manager, that is different.

          1.    eliotime3000 said

The closest thing to graphical interface compatibility is QT. If there was a real interest in improving that detail, it would not be so difficult to develop a desktop interface for each one.

    2.    joshuamalmsteen said

Just a detail, Windows 8.1 is a Windows 8 Service Pack (actually a fix for Windows 8) and not a major update like Mavericks. Internally, the new OS of the block has changed a lot. On the other hand, I am one of those who agree that there are certain things to unify that are scattered on the different GNU / Linux desktops.

And worst of all is that they present it as the newest ...

Seriously: Legally, you could not patent those things presented in Linux, and offer them on the condition that they use the GPL in the code AND that they indicate the creator of the idea? Thus we avoid the problem of people leaving MS / Apple / etc, taking the concept of something that has already been created, and presenting it as their own.

Well ... Unfortunately GNU is against patents, you are going against philosophy, I rather think that everyone GNU and Linux should go to GPL 3 and the matter solved.

Whoops! This time it seems as if Mac OS has copied GNOME and not the other way around: B

I do not know that they are alarmed, if the same GPL allows to copy, improve, distribute and modify

    - «The software under the GPL license can be applied for all purposes (including commercial purposes and even as a tool for creating proprietary software)» - Wikipedia Spanish-

Os X already has this advanced software, they may have copied certain things, regarding maps and elenentary maya is not something new in OS X.

I have my time using Linux but I do not put importance to these issues because despite using Windows I am not interested in their movements, because then I would continue to be their slave.

@Jesus Israel Perales Martinez, more commercials from Ubuntu? Canonical only needs a commercial that says, HP and Intel, they recommend Ubuntu to be excessively commercial, what I hate about this company / distro, is that it even gives credit, its users believe that Ubuntu is Linux or a worthy representative, when clearly they only see Silver, Silver and Silver and not their users, for me Ubuntu is the most Semi-Commercial home distro that exists to the point that well it has not occurred to them to be as exclusive as Apple or Microsoft doing its own kernel from 0 to compete directly with those two. Obvious it would not be Gnu / linux.

Hopefully the "world's most advanced" operating system would implement the good ideas of the Gnu / linux world.

It seems that I am the only one who posts from an OSX. Thank you for the gesture of releasing this new version of your OS for free. Now because of what they think that more publicity is missing in Free Software, I tell them that they are in error, what is missing is STABILITY on the desktop. I always agreed with Miguel de Icaza. I use Debian GNU / linux and many times I have internet connection problems (slowness), problems that my other NTFS partitions recognize (Sometimes it detects them without problems). Sometimes my desktop crashes (although it may be more problems with the drivers than with KDE). But these things don't happen to me that often on OSX. And finally, someone who is multi-platform says it. I use OSX, Linux and win8 xD (And I'm getting into Hurd).

At least these "novelties" cannot be patented ...

So is. Empathy notifications in the Gnome Shell is great. it responds without having to open a window and does not disturb the activities that are being carried out

Isn't that what free software is supposed to be for too? To take it, modify it and sell it if we want? Why so much envy?

Freedom 0: The freedom to use the program, for any purpose.

Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Freedom 2: The freedom to distribute copies, thereby helping your neighbor.

Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program and make the improvements public to others, so that the entire community benefits. Access to the source code is a prerequisite for this.

do these modifications comply with all this?

I went to update a server to Mavericks (MAC mini, 8 Gb of RAM, 2HDDx1Tb ...) to regain decent SMB support, since Lion and Mountain Lion had Apple's own SMBx since due to licensing problems they couldn't use the common one and well, the first thing the update told me is that Mavericks is only compatible with Server3 and if I continued with the update, the first thing I would do would be to put an end to the Server2 applications that I have ... Puagh! Anyway, now I'm updating a workstation, then I'll tell you how it went ...

O_O Although it does not really surprise me by the fact that I do not believe, that the Server issue is a priority for Apple .. Or am I wrong?

      1.    Cocolium said

But Apple has already finished with its line of servers a long time ago and a PC like that server seems to me beyond illogical.

What nonsense to have OS X server having better options on Linux or xBSD, but hey is just a comment.
