Plasma Workspaces 4.11: A Long Term Release

kde-rock-blue

When I refer to a long term release, it does not mean that the release of KDE 4.11 far behind, but plasma 4.11 will have extended support, even when we have with us plasma 2.

I didn't say it, but Aaron Seigo on his blog, where he talks about the decision the Plasma developers made to offer extended support for at least two more years. A great idea if we consider that it can be very beneficial for distributions that maintain long LTS versions, or simply advocate 100% stability.

According to Aaron, plasma 4.11 it will have two very relevant things:

  1. It will be the latest release in the 4.x series of Plasma workspaces. Feature development will totally change to QT5 and KDE Framework 5 based on Plasma Workspaces 2.
  2. We will provide stabilization releases (bug fixes, translation improvements, etc) for two years for KDE Plasma workspaces version 4.11. The applications are not affected, kdelibs and kderuntime will continue as they are today.

As the author tells us in his note, measures like these were one of the secrets behind the success of KDE 3.5, where they focused almost exclusively on polishing and correcting errors to achieve a very stable desktop.

I particularly recommend reading the full article, because Aaron also tells us about other possible measures that will be taken when launching versions, to achieve compatibility between old and new applications and libraries.

Good decision. It makes me want to use LTS, as I don't like rolling releases.

However, it is much easier to customize than other desktops visually.

Very good measure, so they can polish more and more, the environment :)! What Linux needs is things that are polished, rather than adding new features.

More good decisions by the KDE team, this shows how much they learned from the move to version 4. Anyone who uses KDE 5 and complains will know that it is in an unstable version.

In fact, I highly doubt that KDE 5 suffers from the same bugs as KDE 4. Qt5 seems to me to be well polished.

Or OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, or the stable one but with the semi-official KDE repositories, which have it updated up to date xD

    good news.

Kde seems like a good desktop to me, although I have never used it because I need to use few resources, however it seems a good alternative for those who want to migrate to Linux with an advanced desktop.

    1.    VaryHeavy said

I will tell you that KDE no longer consumes as many resources as before, and that it also seems to moderate its consumption in relation to the resources of the machine in question.

I remember when some colleagues and I used Gentoo with KDE 4.1, on 512 mb ram machines, the consumption after the session started was + - about 70 mb of total ram (with all services and the system).
With this I tell you that KDE can be as light as you have time to dedicate.

… We think that at that time this version of KDE will be in Debian Stable when the rest of the distributions use holographic desktops.
But hey, come on, that is a great achievement for Debian!

Seriously... Could you stop that attitude? I have a certain respect for you for having shown on more than one occasion that you have a lot of knowledge, on many topics, but not as a troll. I already told you in a comment that the fact that for you Debian does not meet your requirements, does not mean that it stops being an EXCELLENT Distribution for others. Or well, if you prefer, as happened with Courage at the time, we declare you the official Troll of DesdeLinux xDDD
