PowerTOP: Save power with Linux on Intel processors

PowerTOP is a Linux tool that finds those components that make your laptop consume more energy than necessary when it is not being used. Already in version 2.6.21 of the Linux kernel, at 1000Hz the machine was kept in low consumption. That theoretically resulted in greater power savings - the CPU was left on low power for longer periods as long as the computer was idle.

However, there are many other things that can be detrimental when it comes to energy expenditure, both in the core and in the user space. In response to this problem, the PowerTOP tool was generated, a powerful application that generates a report of everything the system is doing, including which components are the ones that delay everything.

PowerTOP has the following 4 basic features:

  • Shows how well the system is using the power saving features of the hardware in use.
  • Shows the software components that are guilty of inefficient use of the power saving functions of the hardware in use.
  • It helps Linux developers to test their applications and get better performance.
  • It provides the user with suggestions to improve the use of the power saving functions of the hardware in use.
