Problems with Network Manager? Try Wicd

I honestly never had a problem with Network Manager, the application for managing network connections that is installed by default in Ubuntu, and many other distributions. However, It doesn't hurt to know that there are other alternatives, especially since I have read out there that many people ever had problems with the Network Manager.

1.- Uninstall Network Manager:

sudo apt-get purge network-manager *

2.- Install Wicd:

sudo apt-get install wicd

3.- During the installation a message will appear asking which users we want to add to the netdev group. Users belonging to this group will be able to configure and manage Wicd.

4.- Restart.

5.- Upon reloading GNOME, the new Wicd applet should appear in the main panel.

It only remains to configure it to your liking and piacere. The different types of connections are listed on the main screen of the program (wired, Wi-Fi, etc.). Click the button Properties and configure each of them. How to do the latter is something that will depend on how each of you connects to the Internet.

Hi, thanks for the post but:
I tried to follow the steps in this tutorial ... When I ran the command to uninstall network manager I assumed that I would continue to have a network until I restarted my computer, but it was not.
    So logically I can't download wicd ...
Here you have me now .. From Windows TT I have searched and I think I will be able to reinstall network manager using a deb package via usb but I still want to install wicd due to problems with the university's wifi.
My question is: can I install wicd with network manager installed? If not, how do I download the wicd packages first so that I don't need a network when installing it?
I think you should correct this post but thanks anyway, I love this website :).

      Hello Antonio!
That depends on the distribution you are using.
In case you use Ubuntu, you can download the packages manually from here:

Hello, I use linux mint 18, and I made the mistake of uninstalling network manager first, before installing wicd network manager, logically I was left without internet access and it was a fight to install network manager again, I had to reinstall the system, well It is my experience, so I recommend that you do not uninstall the network manager without first having installed the wicd network manager or you will get into trouble, maybe for someone more expert it is not a problem, but at least I did.

My recommendation is that you delete or at least fix this tutorial.
    It has two problems:

The most obvious one, once people uninstall the network manager, they will be left without internet and will not be able to download wicd

In my case, I already had wicd installed, but when I rebooted after uninstalling the network manager, it wouldn't let me log in to cinnamon. The message that came out was:

Xsession: unable to launch "gnome-session-cinnamon" Xsession…. "Gnome-session-cinnamon" not found: falling back to default session.

Eventually I was able to install network manager from .deb that downloaded from another computer, and the above problem was fixed with

    sudo apt-get install mint-meta-debian-cinnamon

But you definitely can't leave the tutorial like that, you're going to cause people a lot of headaches.

    Greetings.

And the other one has, I'm not sure what causes it,
    sudo apt-get purge network-manager *

I agree with you, I am one of those with a headache (I use Windows ...) if you can tell me where you downloaded the network manager's website from, I would appreciate it.
      regards

It is the other way around, you must first download Wicd BEFORE uninstalling Network Manager, it is common sense, because if you do not run out of internet access point and it is a mess. Almost three years later I see that you have not corrected the post, which can cause a lot of headaches for newbies like me. Luckily I ignored it and reversed the steps. In any case thanks and best regards.
