Proxmox VE 8.1 arrives with secure boot support and more

Proxmox-VE

Proxmox VE is an open source server virtualization environment. It is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian

Proxmox Server Solutions has announced the launch of the new version of its open source server virtualization management platform Proxmox VE 8.1, a version in which the verified boot in the UEFI secure boot mode, flexible notification system, as well as the update to Debian 12.2, among other things, stand out.

For those who are unaware of Proxmox, they should know that is a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux intended for deploy and maintain virtual servers using LXC and KVM, and capable of acting as a replacement for products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and the Citrix hypervisor

Proxmox VE provides the means to implement a virtual server system turnkey web-based industrial-grade software to manage hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution has built-in tools for orchestrating virtual environment backups and clustering support available out of the box, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without stopping work.

Main new features of Proxmox VE 8.1

The new version of Proxmox VE 8.1 brings a series of improvements, bug fixes and in particular, it stands out that it was added Support for verified boot in UEFI secure boot mode, ensuring that only verified components with correct digital signatures are used during startup. For UEFI Secure Boot, a shim bootloader is provided, certified with a digital signature accepted by most UEFI hardware devices.

Another change that stands out from the new version, is the Flexible notification system that supports notification redirection according to specific matching rules, which allows you to select a delivery method based on the type of associated event with the notification. Various notification delivery methods are supported, including local Postfix mail server, external authenticated SMTP servers, and Gotify message delivery servers.

A package for creating software-defined networks has been added to the basic delivery (SDN, Software-Defined Networking), in which network management is separated from the data transmission layer and is configured programmatically. Using SDN on Proxmox VE, you can create multi-tenant virtualized networks (VNets) and zones, deployed at the data center level and managed directly through the web interface. It supports the creation of both isolated virtual private networks for individual cluster nodes and complex overlay networks spanning multiple clusters.

In addition to that, Proxmox VE 8.1 arrives synchronized with the Debian 12.2 database, the Linux 6.5 kernel and with support for creating repositories based on Ceph 18.2.0 “Reef” and Ceph 17.2.7 “Quincy” versions.

Of the other changes that stand out from the new version:

  • New versions of QEMU 8.1.2, LXC 5.0.2 and OpenZFS 2.2.0 are involved
  • Proxmox VE SDN enables fine-grained control of virtual guest networks at the data center level.
  • The new DHCP IP Automatic Address Management (IPAM) plugin can be used to transparently assign IPs to virtual guests in simple zones.
  • The web UI now allows you to inspect and edit DHCP leases managed by the built-in IPAM plugin.
  • Allow automatically decompressing an ISO file when downloading it from a URL to a storage. Decompression algorithm can be set in GUI
Allow moving virtual machines and containers from one group to a different one in a single operation.
  • Avoid unnecessarily reloading the GUI after requesting a certificate through ACME for a different cluster node.
  • The permissions editor now also displays ACL paths for PCI/USB mappings and notifications.
