Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06, a minor update with fixes and some changes

NetworkManager on Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06

NetworkManager already integrated in the new update of Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06

The developers of the Raspberry Pi project have published the new update of your linux distribution, “Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06” (previously known as Raspbian), based on the Debian package base.

This new update, brings basically all bug fixes and new software releases which have been released since the previous image in April, but it is mentioned that there are some minor adjustments to the user experience.

Main novelties of Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06

In this new update of Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06, we can find that the application menu, the ability to search is implemented by the names of installed programs, which simplifies keyboard navigation, since the user can open the menu by pressing the Windows key, then immediately start typing the search mask, and after receiving a list of applications that match the request, select the desired one with the cursor keys.

Another change that stands out in this new version is that the panel has separate indicators to control the volume and sensitivity of the microphone (a common indicator was previously offered). When you right-click the indicators, lists of available audio input and output devices are displayed.

In addition to this, Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06 also highlights the added support for NetworkManager network configurator, which can now be used as an option to configure a wireless connection instead of the default dhcpcd background process.

Many other Linux distributions now use a piece of software called NetworkManager to do the same job, which seems to become the de facto standard, which is why we've added the option to use NetworkManager in the Raspberry Pi OS.

It is mentioned that to use a VPN, the corresponding VPN plugin must be installed. The OpenVPN plugin is useful for many networks. To add it, just open a terminal window and type:

sudo apt install network-manager-openvpn-gnome

It is worth mentioning that even the default is still dhcpcd for now, but in the future it is mentioned that there are plans to switch to NetworkManager, which offers many additional useful features, such as VPN support, the ability to create a wireless access point and connect to wireless networks with a hidden SSID. You can switch to NetworkManager in the advanced settings section of the raspi-config settings.

Of the other changes that stand out from this new version:

  • A new software interface for camera control is proposed: Picamera2, which is a high-level link on top of the libcamera library in Python.
  • New keyboard shortcuts have been proposed: Ctrl-Alt-B to open the Bluetooth menu and Ctrl-Alt-W to open the Wi-Fi menu.
