Released the packages corresponding to Xfce version 4.10pre1

As you know, I am following the track very closely to the launch of my Desktop Environment favorite and Nick schermer announced through the forum by Xfce that the packages corresponding to the version are already available 4.10pre1, and if all goes well, on Sunday the TarBall is published with everyone included.

Let's remember that more or less the release dates are the following:

2012-04-01     xfce 4.10pre1 (Feature Freeze)
2012-04-14     xfce 4.10pre2 (String Freeze)
2012-04-28     Xfce 4.10 (pre3) or final release

You can see all the news of each application in this link. Although they are in English, it is worth using a translator and reviewing each one of them, so that they can see the amount of changes that are coming and of bugs corrected.

From the little that I have used it, that environment is really good, the tabs in thunar are missed and that it saves the configuration for each folder.

      Test SpaceFM: http://spacefm.sourceforge.net/
It is a fork of the PCManFM but with many improvements. I think it would like you. It has tabs and saves where you left off. Although I think it does not save the configuration by folder, as Nautilus does 🙁
      But it is super light.

When the final version is ready I will test it carefully. I don't dislike XFCE; it's quick and easy, I see the future.

The people of XFCE should hire you to handle the Marketing of the company, the truth is that you are also excellent in that line, I hope that when you manage to install it you will publish a tutorial.

Hahaha we must not exaggerate Oscar hahaha, although a contract would not hurt me ehh hahaha. Well, yesterday I started "inventing" with my Debian and although I managed to install most of the packages, the result was not what I expected. I don't know if I did it the right way. Anyway, if the tarball is released on Sunday I'll try again.

I told you to fix the flags and the mix of versions you have of a particular package.

Greetings and wait for tomorrow 🙂

Yes, yes .. but it was too late and I was lazy to fix everything ..

Haha I was on it, but I had to go back for a little problem with exo. But nothing, next week I try again 😀

    Interesting…

Something demanded by more than one on the developers' mailing list:
    xfwm4 4.9.0 .. "- Add tiling feature (bug # 6648)."

In xfdesktop 4.9.0 (completed with version 4.9.1):
    «Backdrop image cycling on a timer. »
We no longer need to use external applications to change the desktop background (backdrop in xfce) every x time.

    In xfce4-power-manadger 1.0.11
    "- Support NetworkManager 0.9"
Which would explain why it had no network connection when the hibernated PC started up.

    In xfce4-settings 4.9.3
    "- Complete theme installation script."
Either I'm wrong or there will be an option for installing themes in Xfce. (Not that it was particularly complicated otherwise).

Anyway, apart from the localization updates in the future version 4.10 they have been cleaning up the code a lot and correcting a lot of bugs. They have also taken it very seriously to improve the environment, you just have to see the list of modifications / corrections made in packages such as thunar (no, there are still no tabs), xfce4-session, xfce4-panel, etc.

Bad news for xubunters though, the final xfce 4.10 release is going to be a few days earlier than xubuntu 12.04 so you will probably have to wait for 12.10 to enjoy the new version. There will be those who will try to install the tarball as soon as it is published, something I advise against, at least on xubuntu (from my own experience.)

I was really excited too when I saw that Changelog. 😀

We no longer need to use external applications to change the desktop background (backdrop in xfce) every x time.

To be fair I don't use this option much, and Xfce Some time ago it incorporates the option to change the wallpaper every time we access the session, but this improves things a lot ^^

      In xfce4-power-manadger 1.0.11
      "- Support NetworkManager 0.9"
Which would explain why it had no network connection when the hibernated PC started up.

Hahahaha, thank goodness I don't use NetworkManager..

      In xfce4-settings 4.9.3
      "- Complete theme installation script."
Either I'm wrong or there will be an option for installing themes in Xfce. (Not that it was particularly complicated otherwise).

I was left with exactly the same doubt. This would be something to be appreciated, because although the other method as you mention is not complicated, for a user it is always more comfortable to install themes as in Gnome2.

I know about cleaning the code. Note that if you enter this link you will see that the version 1.3.0 Weighs 4.0Mb and version 1.3.1 Weighs 1.8Mb. About Xubuntu, because there is no remedy, as soon as the version 4.10 I'll try to create a .run, and if I can't, I'll ask Nick schermer let him do it, we'll see if I'm pleased.

They have been doing the installer thing since version 4.0, maybe you have to wait a few days after the publication of the final tarball.
It is very useful considering that the dependencies may change (they include support for SVG in the icons) as well as a certain order must be fulfilled when installing (eg lbxfce4ui before xfdesktop or xfce4-panel, I think ).

My comment regarding the update in xubuntu is because there are really important changes in core elements of Xfce, in a Xubuntu installation (still recently installed) it should be installed exactly as standard and still old packages would not be removed. If we add the gnome dependencies to this, the disaster can become epic (when I installed the "beast" xfce 4.4 they fell to X 🙁).

In my case it will stop being a problem because I am going to abandon Xubuntu, after analyzing my needs and seeing how the distros panorama is, I have opted for Debian Testing, and as soon as they release 4.10 in their repositories, I switch.

And I'm done, the theme installer script thing leads me to think that maybe it was a last minute decision, seeing that Xfce was being adopted by many gnomers who did not accept the radical change of Gnome 3. In this way the transition is made a little more comfortable by slightly reducing the "adaptation curve".

        1.    elav <° Linux said

Yes, I understand that there must be an order, I actually used this script that works in previous versions, modifying the version of the packages of course.

I haven't really touched the XFCE much but since it's a light environment like LXDE so maybe I'll start testing it one day. Elav I hope that if I start you will give me the tutorials on how to customize it hahaha

Do you think that with the disappearance of gnome 2, and the dissatisfaction of many people with gnome 3, there will be a further evolution of xfce and a growth in its developer community?

    1.    elav <° Linux said

      It's possible.

    2.    cryotope said

The answer to that question could be yes and no.

Yes, because it is very similar to gnome 2 with the advantage of being very light (mainly not being overloaded with extra functions) and it more than meets the needs of most Gnome 2 users (those who are not expert users and who have tried Linux through Ubuntu, which has Gnome as its main desktop). This may encourage developers who do not like Gnome 3 but who are also not convinced by KDE 4 to join or, at least, to collaborate with the development of Xfce. In fact, the developers' mailing list is receiving messages from "switchers" who have given the environment a chance and liked it.

      But….

No, mainly because of the attitude of the current developers. They tend to be very, very stubborn with marked development lines (the controversy over Thunar's eyelashes is a very illustrative example of this, but not the only one). Another factor is that when you ask them for some kind of guide, they usually send them to the wiki or to the code of some example without more (an xfcera version of RTFM). And it is still curious that at the very least in the list of developers they usually mention the fact that they are a small group and that they need people to help out.

I think that in the coming months there are going to be important changes in Xfce, porting Xfce to GTK3, seeing how the foundation they set up in Germany evolves, as well as the reception of 4.10 in the next few weeks can greatly influence the evolution of the attitude of the Xfce development team.

      Interesting times are coming….

Hmm ... I did not see the correction of the thumbnails in thunar, supposedly now I was going to use thumblerd to make them work correctly since if you edited an image the thumbnail would remain with the previous preview.

Otherwise they fixed a lot of things that I was waiting for, for my part it made me annoying that the desktop icons were always disorganized when leaving an application in full screen or that it could not be pasted directly on the desktop.

In addition to the improvements that were included that are really useful and expected.

Looking forward to using xfce again.

    1.    cryotope said

That fix you mention appears in xfdesktop:

      * Thumbnail desktop icon previews using tumblerd.

I don't know why it doesn't appear in the Thunar Changelog, it may have been fixed in the early stages of development of 4.10 and missed including it.

      However, the following does appear:

      Respect ThunarIconFactory :: show-thumbnails. Fixes a regression.
There is a possibility that it was already supported in 4.8 but due to different bugs it will not work correctly.

      1.    Mariano said

I had noticed that, but since they do not specifically refer to thunar, it seemed strange to me since it was one of the earrings that they had been talking about for a while, besides that now if or if thumbler is going to handle all the thumbnails within xfce4.

Good, the query has not much to do with the post but in part it does. So I take advantage of: any advice, tip to update Xfce 4.6 to 4.8 in Debian? I installed it recently and looked for how to update it but still can't find. I don't know if modifying the sources.list or how it can be done!

Greetings and sorry for the inconvenience!

Hi friends, I'm just testing xubuntu, I like it a lot, I'm with version 11.xx I don't remember, but I would like to know when 12.04 is released, which I think is the last one, and I suppose it comes with xface if someone knows that it will give me a hand, in addition to a tutor for the proper management of xubuntu
    Thank you in advance
