I haven't written anything about Ubuntu. I've written about Arch, a lot of Bash, how to install Free aptoide and without having to do any work (either through the official site or through others), servers, etc ... but just enough from Ubuntu. Let's see what can be done 😉
Unity It is the desktop environment that comes by default in Ubuntu for some time now. There are users who like it and others who don't (in which I include myself). There are those of us who don't use Unity and in fact we don't even use Ubuntu, but there are those who installed Ubuntu with Unity and now want to try or use another flavor like Cinnamon o Mate, for those users this post goes.
How to remove Unity from Ubuntu 14.10
To do this we will eliminate a series of packages from our system, we must open a terminal and put the following in it:
sudo apt-get remove unity unity-asset-pool unity-control-center unity-control-center-signon unity-gtk-module-common unity-lens* unity-services unity-settings-daemon unity-webapps* unity-voice-service
This will remove several packages which ... well, it will make us stop having Unity in the system 🙂
How to install Mate Desktop on Ubuntu 14.10
Mate It is a fork of the original and now deceased Gnome 2. In other words, for those who do not want to switch to KDE, Cinnamon and Gnome Shell convince them, there is Mate, its precious Gnome2 but updated, with improvements, etc.
Before to install Mate we had to add a PPA and more ... well, now in Ubuntu 14.10 it is no longer necessary, Mate comes in the same repository:
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-core sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extra
Done, this will install a bunch of packages for you. Then in the login menu (LightDM) must choose to log in using Mate and voila.
How to install Cinnamon on Ubuntu 14.10
Cinnamon is a fork of the Gnome Shell created by the Linux Mint team. why? ... well, because according to them Gnome Shell is not as stable as it should, because it does not advance at the desired speed, or simply because these guys like to do their own things and not wait for others, for whatever reason there is Cinnamon, which is the important thing.
To install it now, we will have to add a PPA, put the following commands to add the PPA, update and install Cinnamon:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gwendal-lebihan-dev / cinnamon-nightly sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cinnamon
If I don't understand correctly, version 2.4 of Cinnamon will be installed.
To enter through him would be the same as with Mate. In LightDM choose Cinnamon as environment to use and voila!
What if I want to remove Mate, Cinnamon and go back to Unity?
Some would tell you to reinstall the system, but we don't always have time for it, nor is it the only solution.
With this we uninstall Mate:
sudo apt-get purge mate-desktop-environment-core sudo apt-get purge mate-desktop-environment-extra
Now with these we removed Cinnamon:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge sudo ppa-purge ppa: gwendal-lebihan-dev / cinnamon-nightly
With these we clean packages that have become loose:
sudo apt-get autoremove
And now we move on to install Unity again:
sudo apt-get install unity
The end!
Well there is not much more to add, good luck with your Ubuntu 😀
I'll see if little by little I can start writing Apps for Android specifically, because due to changes that I will make, maybe I can have better access to Google Play.
Let's see, how was it that in Linux viruses were myths?

[OFFTOPIC] hahahaha I took the time to read the comments and don't stop shitting myself with laughter hahahahaha [/ OFFTOPIC]
Good post che, complete !!!
Gracias y saludos.
What the hell do you have to see your buttocks in the rain? The Turla thing is old, it is nothing new and Kaspersky (who gave the data), did not give clear examples of its use and the way it can affect Linux ... so for me it is nothing more than bad propaganda ..
It is highly probable that the antivirus industry wants to put its PAWS on Linux, especially Karpesky, those Russian gangsters, on the other hand if there are viruses for Linux, it is just that they are very subtle, they split a piece of hardware into 2:

Frank Alexander, in the two articles you post, I didn't see concrete examples either, or rather, nothing that runs without using sudo, or with the root user. Did I miss something?
not all malware is a virus and that virus is definitely not.
Definitely, time is wasted with Linux and its distros, installing Ubuntu plus updates takes a total of 5 hours in downloads, configurations, installation of packages, initial installation and after all that you have to continue configuring because there is always an error, already I get art of Linux and its complexes, it is useless just to navigate "safely" whenever you install it and you are one of those people who needs real work tools you realize that you have to return to Windows or in the last of the Cases for those who have more resources to use mac OS, because the tools offered by Linux do not work for you, there are some that are the great exception like GIMP which is easier to use than Photoshop itself, to me the appearance is Unity or Ghome or Mate does not matter much to me in the end and I don't work with appearances, I work with benefits ...
Nothing is achieved overnight, easy and unambitious minds abound.

I hope it helps you, 🙂
My experience with Mint installations (which, as you know, is based on Ubuntu) on old computers, system configurations, updates, etc., does not usually take me more than an hour and a half.
I have never had errors (more than twenty pieces), everything recognized the first time.
As I see that you are one of those who needs professional tools (for a fee), I don't know what you have looked for in Linux, I make websites, office automation, digital retouching, videos, etc., I have those tools and I use them without complexes.
I imagine from your comment that you are stumbling through operating systems, I hope you find what you are looking for.
P.S. if you ever do an installation and w7 monitor how long it takes to install, update, download programs, cracks etc and tell us….
Well, if you feel more comfortable with another system, nobody forces you to use it, very troll that of coming to a Linux blog in a post that has nothing to do with what you are commenting on, to leave a comment like that, right? xD
If windows are better for you, good for you, not all experiences are the same, I have windows7, kaos and antergos, kaos in 15 minutes I have it installed, anteros quite the opposite, almost 1 hour because it downloads everything while you are installing it and w7 also 1 hour and something and then another hour for updates and several restarts to continue updating and another one looking for antivirus. That only in the installations, if I count how long it takes to start windows and how long it takes for example kaos, there is no comparison. I waste more time in the wind.
Sorry for the off.
Needless to say, it is a subjective opinion, out of context and not very demonstrable.
- First: It is a post about switching between linux desktops, therefore, what do you do here if you don't like it?
- Second: The comment seems out of spite, despite that windows does not allow you the same as linux since I was a user (and still am) of windows for about 15 years, and of GNU / Linux only 5 (which is not a small thing either).
We could spend hours debating, since each operating system adapts to different needs, but I do not see it correct, LIE. The fastest installation of windows with programs (using ninite.com) is AT LEAST 2 hours.
With Ubuntu (for example) it is 15 minutes without counting updates, because of course, if we count the windows update time there could be many more, AND NOT TO SPEAK about the time that the machine is inoperative until the updates are installed (sometimes I think if windows does not miss the single-task system).
In short, everyone finds their comfort in the OS. I have been a developer for a few years and yet I do not change Linux for anything, the ease and flexibility of installing development environments is incomparable.
Regards!
Read Linux like GNU / Linux (sorry)
Maybe in the work that you are oriented there is no tool, but if it is very important to me for the design it is a super tool since it does not lag like when you use windows that always have many processes and you have to turn it off one by one. New and good user will seem difficult to you, I also when I started a whole world was made to me but then I grabbed the rod and ready my Ubuntu is optimized.
the title sounds like ...
... how to make the poor Ubuntu functional and pleasing to the eye
it's like using linux mint right? xD
http://www.tecmint.com/remove-unity-and-install-cinnamon-and-mate-desktop-in-ubuntu-14-10/
Can you have all three installed: unity, Cinnamon and mate?
I think so, I don't use ubuntu, but in theory I do. It would only happen that you would have the programs from the other desktops.
You can, but Unity is quite intrusive in Mate, for example, you have to share the same theme in both and the notifications of mate are replaced by those of mate. Over there if you configure it well, you can fix it the same, but no idea.
The same is also true between Pantheon and Unity.
Or the easy way: install Ubuntu Mate. Hopefully it becomes official.
Hello, in my work we install Ubuntu on all the PCs (around 100 PCs), minimum configuration. We install cinnamon more user-friendly. I like the idea of rooting Unity to free up space. Good post
because they don't just install linux mint I don't understand why to do this xD
I used not to install Mint or Ubuntu flavors because I thought they were inferior to Ubuntu, then the installation ended up screwing up so many more environments when you want to delete the others. Finally one day I was encouraged to install flavors of Ubuntu and Mint. And it was so pleasant to see how a distro has to work 🙂
In my case, because I got to Linux 15 days ago by a friend who told him that I was curious about the OS and he gave me a CD of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and while I was researching the world of Linux I learned about the many distros and their advantages, But with all the software that I installed and how difficult it was because my Internet is the reverend shit, I have not wanted to use Mint until my PC actually asks for the formatting, that's why this post is useful for me, because Unity I disliked it quite a bit after comparing it with the Mint 17.1 from the same friend who gave me the CD, and I want to exchange it for Cinnamon without having to format my PC for Mint.
I prefer to install the original ubuntu and remove unity to install linux mint or one of the "flavors" of ubuntu. Linux Mint is not bad, but why install the copy when I can have the original, also it does not allow you to upgrade it and restricts updates. And the "flavors" do not convince me, I prefer the original, also I had problems in the past with the "flavors".
If at any time I have issues with ubuntu, I will consider going mint.
Fuck ubuntu with his unity that has struck him down in a great way, now his son mint will give him that task, I hope that ubuntu will come back on his own terms as version 9.04 that flew was friendly and had a humble brown color, that characterized him as ubuntu.
why add a ppa for cinnamon if in 14.10 if it is in the repositories or it just seems to me
unity is not removed faster with
sudo apt remove –purge unity *
I like cinnamon but it never did me right
mate was always perfect for me
Well I'm using Gnome Classic and I don't feel bad at all, it's very similar to Gnome 2, I'm happy with it, and I don't even use Unity, in fact with Cairo Dock it doesn't work anymore but I still have it taking up space, let's see if a one of these days I decide to desistalarlo.
I think that if someone wants to install cinnamon, they should install linuxmint, which is based on ubuntu and in this case is very stable.
Hello my friend, I start bragging about your apart, it seems very good and efficient to me, the fact is that I start to get caught up in the free Linux system and its components, and I would like to know if to have the view of cinnamont I must as a primary step uninstall the unit afterwards install the mate and later install the cinnamon ?? So?
windows is better
linux is crap
You forgot to say that while removing "completely" Unity, to install either Mate or Cinnamon and etc ... the moment you do it, and install any other interface, and want to revert it, you will have to reinstall what you got from Unity com command
$ sudo apt-get remove unity unity-asset-pool unity-control-center unity-control-center-signon unity-gtk-module-common unity-lens * unity-services unity-settings-daemon unity-webapps * unity-voice -service
Goodbye
Consult, install the Netboot version of Ubuntu, without any desktop, I want to try it is Mate, so I installed the LightGDM but when logging in, it gives an error of «Login failure» .. What can I miss? Thank you..
Can anyone help me to go from Kubuntu to Ubuntu Mate? Thank you
Hi, if I have ubuntu 14.04 LTS does it work the same way?
Nothing happens if I have partitioned the disk and I also have windows 7 installed?
regards
