Small analysis and review of the Slimbook, an ultrabook that breathes GNU / Linux

This is an article sent by a satisfied user of his Slimbook who asked me to publish it so that they know his impression with this computer.

The truth is that I had wanted to write this for a long time, and I don't know where to start, if the laptop itself, the brand or what is behind it. slim book a very light, powerful and free ultrabook laptop! SLIM BOOKS It is a new brand, which aims to cover an almost non-existent market area, that of affordable ultrabooks and with Linux.

They have placed laptops that are around 1,36 kilos on the market and have Intel Celeron, Intel i5 and Intel i7 processors. As for disk and memory, you cook it, you choose the capacities. Something that very few allow.

But before detailing some of its features, such as its FullHD 1080 screen, or its backlit keyboard, I want to say that talking about its design is talking about its similarity with the apple brand. Many will notice it from the photos, but they have it very clear, and they have it on their website:

"If you want a Mac, do not stop trusting the apple, if you want a powerful lightweight and affordable laptop, choose us"

Next I am going to put some images, of the analysis carried out for the i5-4350u processor that incorporates the Slimbook model 515 and that has a market price of 699 euros, although the lower model is at 499.

The screenshots are from the laptop running Ubuntu, so if I haven't already said it, the ultrabook comes with linux installed. And the truth is that the range is very wide, it allows Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, Antergos, etc.

What do we find in this Slimbook?

First of all, we leave you a first image with the summary characteristics:

Summary Features

  • As you can see, it is an Intel i5 4350U processor with 4 threads at 1.4 GHz that reaches 2.9 Ghz in Turbobost. It is one of the best processors of the U series of the 4th, so much so that you can see a comparison of how he equals his brothers in the 5th.
  • The RAM for this analysis is the most common, 4 GB, although it is also mounted with 8 GB.
  • The operating system that has been installed is: Ubuntu 15.04.
  • The hard drive is a 120Gb SSD with a Samsung chip.

Second, regarding the screen, we show you in the following image the characteristics of the Slimbook laptop screen:

Screen

  • Full HD 1080 LED screen.
  • 13.3 ”(inch) screen size.
  • With a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels.
  • With a refresh rate (number of times the monitor refreshes the screen) of 60Hz.

Next, an aspect that we want to highlight is the memory consumed by the Ubuntu operating system when the computer starts up.

Conference proceedings

  • From the image, in the next section 'History of memory and exchange', we obtain the memory consumed by Ubuntu, which reaches about 400MB (10%) of the total.
  • After approximately 60 seconds, we can see in the 'CPU History' how the cores are already working. The image shows the 4 wires in operation with 2%, 1%, 0% and 1% respectively.

Next, we show you as soon as you start the battery life:

Battery

  • When we start up our Slimbook laptop, our battery life starts at approximately 8 hours.
  • It should also be said that it is not being used yet, so once we start working fully with the laptop, the remaining life of our battery will drop to 5 hours.

The following image shows the Ubuntu test that we performed on our system:

Ubuntu test

  • With this test, we test the complete equipment, the wifi, the webcam, the bluetooth, everything. And we make sure that it has passed without any error or warning from Ubuntu.
The laptop has been designed in-house with 100% Linux in mind, so everything has to work perfectly.

Next, also highlight this capture: Ubuntu, like other distros, provide a proprietary driver, in addition to free, to optimize the operation and performance of the CPU:

CPU

Hard drive speed test

Speed Test

  • Through the instruction 'hdparm -Tt / dev / sda', we do a speed test to our hard disk.
  • When running 'hdparm' speed tests, it does not take into account the file system in use as it writes to a raw device
  • We get a cache read time of about 14178MB (almost 14GB) in 2 seconds.
  • On the other hand, we get a 'buffered disk' read time of about 1566MB (1.53GB) in 3 seconds. That is 521,47 MB in 1 second.

If we run the reading test in Windows, we see that the rate is 501 MB or 20 MB less.

SSD speed

In this other capture, executed in Windows, we can also see the high 1GB write rates in sequential, random access, and with algorithms:

Ignition times

In the YouTube channel of Slimbook, you can see the ignition time with different operating systems.

Support

It is surprising and gratifying that a company in Spanish spends time doing tutorials on its website, but above all, you realize something that few can say, behind SLIMBOOK there are LINUX users with programming knowledge, who know how to stick with the configurations more difficult. And to that I add, there are people who offer you the attention you deserve, almost in a personalized way. You can also ask for help in your own forum, where you will be very well attended.

The experience generally seems to be rewarding for all users who have purchased one of these ultrabooks, such as Baltolkien, who leaves it very well reflected en KDE Blog , or Joan who talks about the best Linux laptop at portatiles-baratos.net. And with these free, powerful, light and affordable computers, SLIMBOOK has hit the nail on the head 😉

You didn't understand me Elav. I wrote "not to use it" referring to Slackware and not the laptop :).

The only downside is that they don't have a 15-inch one, I need the CD.

With the size of the screen you can't do much, but with the CD reader, well https://slimbook.es/pedidos/accesorios

Can they be bought from Argentina?

    1.    Damian said

I sent them an email to consult them and they responded promptly.

We can buy it from your web store by credit card, the cost of shipping is about € 85. The problem is that you have to add 35% of the card and 50% for import duties.

      1.    Ever said

The € 499 version ends up costing you almost $ 12000 Argentines. With a lot of luck (but a lot) you get through customs and save yourself about $ 4000. With great bad luck, an empty box arrives at your house;). It is still cheap.

It honestly disgusts me that they copy Apple so blatantly. There really is no other slim design that is not ugly?

And I'm not saying this because I am a Mac user, the same thing I thought at the time when Ubuntu began to appleize.

    1.    elav said

For me it is not a problem, in fact, I have always liked the idea of having something as nice as a Macbook, and if it comes with Linux, all the better.

To tell the truth, the aesthetics of Apple's hardware is very good, but lately it is failing in terms of practicality of its handling and the occasional function such as battery life.

Anyway, the Mac Mini are perfect to be able to program in XCode.

Tell that to Dieter Rams 🙂

    🙁 € 600 in Mexico is a lot… approx $ 12 thousand pesos, not counting shipping or customs… I'll be wanting 1.

I'm testing winbugs 10 on my hp g4 laptop that originally came with ubuntu 12.04 pre-installed that by the way from power to login it took like 7 or 8 seconds, but that time windows does when starting is because said system does not really turn off but hibernates or something similar

    1.    eliotime3000 said

From Windows 8, instead of completely shutting down the system, it leaves it in sleep state (or stand-by), thus gaining speed when switching on and off. The true ignition time is noticeable when restarting it, since there Windows completely restarts the system in order to carry out the updates.

Fortunately, Windows already includes an option that allows you to disable the "fast shutdown" option so that you can close all applications in one fell swoop.

For me it would be the perfect laptop if I had 14 ", because 13.3" seems very small and 15,6 very big.

Excellent they look luxurious, the only thing is the screen very small .. I think the system76 is better although its design is not as beautiful as this one ..

    Hello,

First of all a very good article, I have a little doubt: this laptop has interested me a lot, really, but would I be happy to know if someone has already had an experience with it using only free software? In other words, with a completely free GNU / Linux distribution, such as Trisquel.

In advance thank you very much.

Nvidia or AMD graphics cards? Doesn't that bring anything? Or can you ask too? Or does Intel HD already run?

    1.    r0uzic said

For now, no model brings a dedicated graphics but an Intel HD 4400/5000, but come on, it is difficult to see an ultrabook under € 1000 with a dedicated graphics.

We will be left with the desire to order one 🙁

I doubt that a user speaks plural.
    Another detail is the images.
    Otherwise, the bug looks good.

It clearly states: "This is an article sent by a satisfied user of his Slimbook who asked me to publish it so that they know his impression with this computer."
It is not at all hidden advertising aka sponsored post. In Desdelinux They would never do anything like that..., not sell links for SEO or anything like that...

I do not doubt you, but the supposed user!

Excellent. If I can get it to run in dual-boot with Windows Vista 32-bit with the respective plethora of updates, it would be spectacular (they all run Windows 7 now). : v

Nah, good hardware and better than the default in ultrabooks now.

The truth is that equipment looks quite succulent. It is a pity that if I ask Venezuela, the change plus the customs tax will end up costing me more than I can afford, I hope it reaches the stores here to buy it at a good price

  17.   rosebard said

    I have mine.
The truth is that it is going very well and I am very very happy.
When I asked the Slimbook for more details about the laptop, they referred me to this website, and that made me decide, thank you very much.

It makes no sense to remove computers with #Ubuntu installed when they have the Windows key ¬¬

I strongly advise against purchasing this laptop. I did it and it is expensive, the assembly lasted almost a month, the 24h express delivery took 8 days, the SSD is not Samsung and they tried to trick me by putting an i3 instead of an i5.
If you want to wait a month and have problems choose SLIMBOOK. If you want to save about 100-150 euros, look for Aliexpress.

    Greetings to all.

    1.    Manuel said

I clarify that they did not try to deceive me, it was their error in the assembly.
And I repeat myself, the experience has been terrible due to the achievement of failures in all parts of the chain. The only good thing has been the attention.

Best of luck to the brave who bought your Slimbook.

Forget about buying it from China, they charged me 180 euros at customs! I backfired, I did not put the declared value.
And if it breaks, I have to bear the cost of shipping it. If I had known, I buy it in Spain from those of slimbook.

After a few days of intensive use of the web, fullhd movies and some little office software I have to say that this Slimbook is going like a shot! I entered this page, I read the review, I liked it and bought it, in this case the i5 version with 8gb of ram and 120 SSD and the truth is that I do not regret it at all and also at a good price, I definitely recommend it to whoever is looking for a laptop with these characteristics 😉

Someone would be kind enough to tell me how the kdenlive or the inskape goes with the Intel Graphics HD 5500 graphics. A dedicated one or with this strip would be more convenient enough. Greetings.

Hello, I have a Slimbook, with components with the highest range they have, but I do not recommend it at all, as they use very low quality components. In less than a year, I have broken the charger (they actually use a rather shabby model), the keyboard and ... the screen !!!!! I do not know if I have played the china, but my experience is very bad. I use it for work and have had to turn to old computers several times already 🙁

I just came across this review looking for Katana stuff. I bought them a Classic (at the time there was only this model) 8 months ago and I am delighted with it, I have decided to update the new model and leave this to my wife since in the end, whenever I am careless, she has taken it to work.

In my case I looked at the components when it arrived and it was a Samsung SSD, I bought it with Ubuntu and when my wife started using it we switched to Elementary because she liked the interface better. I had a problem with the WiFi and I ended up sending it to the technical service, in the end it turned out that it was my mistake and that with asking in the forum I could have fixed it but I was glad to know that they are there for when I have a real problem.

The only drawback that I get is the enter key, which is smaller than usual and I did not look at it before buying it. I was used to always using a desktop and it has been difficult for me to adapt to a smaller enter key, but practice makes perfect.
