SolusOS: Next to be my favorite distribution

Readers of this blog will realize that I am a loyal user of Debian as distribution and Xfce as Desktop Environment, but passion does not blind me, sometimes there are moments when I feel the absence of some functionalities that my favorite desktop lacks.

I do not use KDE for various reasons that are now irrelevant to mention, so I am Gnome. Gnome Shell I don't particularly like it at all, and although many users are happy with it, at least it seems to me that it is not designed for use on PC, so I could use other Shells as an alternative.

Based on my personal taste, I only have 3 options: Xfce (with its shortcomings, it is still my favorite desktop), Cinnamon (like Shell for Gnome) y Gnome classic o fallback. Unity could be a viable option if it were available in Debian, But is not the case. Cinnamon ya we saw that currently it cannot be installed on Debian, and it's a shame because he would be the ideal candidate and Gnome fallbackWell, it doesn't work as well as I would like and it has a lot of details to polish.

That's where it comes in SolusOS, a distribution of which we have already spoken in DesdeLinux and that precisely polishes those details that bother me so much Gnome fallback. One of them, to mention some, are the icons in the notification area, which by default are large and ugly, something that has been corrected by Ikey Doherty.

SolusOS, in its version 2, is already in the Alpha 5 and in a very short time the release of the version Stable. Viewing the images on the account G + from Ikey, I have noticed that you are doing a final job with the artwork of the distribution. Let us remember that we are talking about that it is based Debian Testing (Points in favor), and on top of this, a series of super updated packages that Debian by default it does not provide.

So if you can have a Classic Gnome in terms of appearance, using the technology of Gnome 3.4, well polished, about Debian Testing and with updated packages as I said, what more could you ask for? SolusOS It would become my favorite distribution, as long as when testing it, there is nothing that is unsatisfactory.

For now here are some images of how the Alpha 5:

You have one option ... use Mate 😉
Mate but with steroids, that is ... you polish it WELL, you do a little magic and voila, you have it shiny 😀

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Not to mention, as much as they can put it, it is still Gnome2 and I don't think the MATE guys will be able to take it to a higher level in the short term ..

  2.   KZKG ^ Gaara said

By the way ... there are many (MANY) who after 'discovering' SolusOS pass, you are ... Yoyo, and several more that I have read on Twitter, ... damn, I'll have to give you a taste to see haha

    1.    elav <° Linux said

I don't think you like it, in the end you are a KDE user and SolusOS is Gnome.

      1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Indeed 🙁… that's what stops me the most. Well being honest ... that and that my Debian Testing + KDE works for me so, so well, it does not give me errors, it allows me to concentrate on working and nothing else ... that it has bought me 😀

You are an inveterate fan of KDE, and if you don't use QT, it's like you're not breathing… fanboy ¬ ¬ hahaha

I tried the Alpha4 and I was not quite convinced, although I do find what they are doing interesting, because with gnome shell, many of us have been left without knowing what to use or which distro to choose ...

    1.    commentator said

Over the weekend I installed Debian GNU / Linux (Sid), with xfce 4.8 desktop and I made some customizations to it and I really liked it.

      1.    xykyz said

I have already used debian and xfce several times, in the end I have opted to use kde in arch, but I am more concerned with people who are more or less new, who use the desktop daily but have no knowledge about the system and that with the replacement of gome2 by gnome shell and with the appearance of unity in ubuntu it has been a bit in no man's land without knowing which linux to use. And I say this because I know specific cases, apart from what is read in forums and blogs.

elav <° Linux and KZKG ^ Gaara… Why can't you use Fedora or Open Suse?

Do you have problems downloading any of these distros there in Cuba?

Sorry for the audacity but it is that for days I have been about to ask you this and it cannot be a better moment than this 🙂

    1.    proper said

I understand that in Cuba they have access to Debian, Ubuntu and Arch only.

      1.    jamin samuel said

        proper I didn't know

      2.    jamin samuel said

Although I still do not understand why ???

So what's wrong with Fedora and why in Cuba they don't allow using this Distro?

I DON'T think it's for political reasons, I understand that the USA and Cuba don't get along at all, but do you really think that's the reason?

        1.    dwarf said

I answer you in a simple way:

The point is not that they are bad, but that they do not have free access to the internet, so if they do have it, it is very slow.

In Cuba there are mirrors of the Debian, Arch and Ubuntu repositories, which is why they are the only distros that can keep up to date without dying in the attempt.

        2.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Indeed, it is as nano explains.
As we have an internet SO but SO slow, using online repos (like everyone else) is impossible for us.
What we do is copy a repo (mirror) on our HDD, so we install from our HDD instead of needing internet (which is scarce here and you don't know how much).

The problem is that here there are many repos (mirrors) for Ubuntu and Debian, but for the rest of the distros almost none 🙁

          1.    Diego said

No offense, but the people who lived in the stone age were more advanced than you Cubans.

From what you write, it seems that you are only interested in the aesthetic aspect of the distros. It is true that it is important but so is the support behind a distribution.

    1.    roman77 said

From the ignorance of someone who for now has not tested it, I suspect that you should use Debian repos directly, I doubt that you have your own for most of the files, including security updates.
From what I imagine that the support is the one provided by Debian.

      1.    dwarf said

They have backports, I mean, they have small repositories to keep certain applications up to date and they use Debian repositories.

I have two weeks using SolusOS. At first I installed it with the idea of it being my second distro, but it became my main distro. I think that those who have taken a look at several linux distros can see that SolusOS has everything that a "classic" linux user could ask for: it is a fast, stable distro, with a very nice aesthetic, it is "out of the box. box », very configurable whatever you put on it. It brings the Synaptic manager by default, just like compiz; Cairo-dock and Screenlets fit perfectly, it is the world of .deb, well, nothing is missing. Linux users running around testing distros should give this a try. By the way, if anyone thought Classic Gnome was dead they have to try SolusOS.

^ _ ^ that distro is tempting me vastly so I'm already downloading it XD, you can see the great job they do to be a good distro, that's great, in addition to being based on debian.
-ah something that I do not understand well, this distro uses the debian tensting branch therefore it would be a rolling release and it would be updated without the need to install everything from scratch? or it would be frozen like ubuntu that releases 2 versions a year and you have to install everything from scratch

    1.    elav <° Linux said

I really don't know what to tell you right now, as Testing will be in a freezing stage in a few days. But in theory yes, it is a kind of Rolling.

Am I the only one who doesn't like me? First, the installer only lets you use an HDD, which is horrible since I use the home on another HDD, and second, when I installed the NVIDIA driver I could never boot again, so I'll wait for me the second version, to see if they fix those problems.

    1.    Alba for lifetime said

ay no; A; (I'm derp and I didn't look at this comment) don't tell me that! I also mount the / home elsewhere ... too bad: /

  31.   Alba for lifetime said

I would love to use SolusOS ... but ... Gnome: U ... I didn't get anything about Gnome. The same as some other shell of the deviantArt but ... I don't know, something tells me that I'm not going to get used to it and I'm going to send it to the churro. I already found the mouse way with compiz and emerald.

Maybe they must have seen it on twitter yesterday before going into a 5 hour coma lol (aka, feel really bad) But LMDE gives me more headaches than advantages lately. Due to the fact that they get updates every time it rains, the machine is out of date with desire. I cannot be without Gimp 2.8 for example, because it is compatible with .ora files (those of MyPaint) and that is a lot of advantage for me that if I cannot do it in one, I do it in the other and I return to the first one. He sends me to hell every time I want to install add-ons to Rhythmbox or Clementine or something else and won't let me kick them open again.

Well, I could use Xubuntu and that's it, but I can't get it to work on my machine with 2 HDDs, one of 40 Gigs is destined for the root and swap, the other of 160 mounted as a slave for my files. Whatever you do, whether from Xubuntu I change the / home to the slave disk or directly from the installer, after restarting I get an error 1 or something like that from the bus and that the system is going to restart ... and it is a loop without the end because I get the kernel, it enters, and it throws the error, it restarts alone and it repeats. The same happened to me with Mint 12, so I guess it's something from Ubuntu that I don't even know how to find a solution.

Debian ... I tried the CUT version but I really didn't know what with the repos and it was very tedious for me to be installing everything else and seeing that some programs did not pull me because I was missing who knows that in synaptic and installing and installing is very tedious.

What dou you recommend? I only have this computer to consult an installation problem and it makes me desperate not to know what the hell happens to Xubuntu when I move the / home disk. LMDE I begin to consider it dead and Debian asks a lot of me and in my health condition I will not be breaking my head much to see what the young man is missing (they see me at this time for a medical examination that they will do tomorrow at a of my nieces and he should not sleep at all but no one in the house can stand because everyone works and you have to watch that he does not sleep, I eat I have a lot of free time tomorrow I go to sleep all day and that's it. I'm sick too but more than her, not u3u) And I don't want to fight with Solus for the environment (if the fallback lets me use compiz and dockbarX, what better)

(Like this drama I should have put it on the forum but come on, what happens there first ends here somehow)
