I just posted the news that I already know Linux Mint 14 RC is available, and Clem just announced that in the 64-bit version there is a problem that does not allow to install applications like Skype, Google Earth or any other 32-bit package.
The ability to install 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment is commonly referred to as "Multiarch". Apparently there was a change with dpkg in Debian, which made the configuration multi-arch become obsolete in Ubuntu. You can see more information about this problem here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ia32-libs/+bug/1016294
Solution
To enable Multiarch, open a terminal and type the following commands:
sudo dpkg --add-arquitectura i386
apt update
This problem will be fixed manually in the stable version of linux mint 14.
@MonitoLinux too much work yours. I'm not sure I'll find it in the stable backports. But I can guarantee that in Sid, and most likely by now in Wheezy's repos [1] you will find it available.

The multiarch support is something that has been making a lot of noise. I collided with him like in June and he had already been rolling for a long time.
@Willians is that I come from older times, where there were not so many repositories with the applications that one needed, where one of the most that he found was the source code.
Here [1] an article by a DD on the subject.
And on debian.org [2]

I'm a little lost (vaaale a lot) with this. I am using Xubuntu 12.10 64Bit (a shot compared to ubuntu 12.10 which is leeeento) and my surprise when I went to install KompoZer is that it did not appear ... in the end I deduced that since it did not exist for 64bit it was not in the repositories ... although until now it always had installed (with apt-get install Kompozer) but this time it did not appear. After a lot of thinking I found a 64 bit DeB and installed it. But my doubt and finally I get to the point. If I install this that you comment on this post. Will 32bit packages appear in the repository to install 32bit programs if 64bit ones are not available? Would the 32-bit Kompozer have appeared for me to install in the repositories? Is it good that I do it for future programs that I need?
elav I told you, that's not why I was in Debian sid 😛
in fact this problem that mint presents, Debian sid already presented it about 2 months ago, even in synaptic it says that before installing ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk, it recommends that you add dpkg –add-architecture: i386 then run a update and ready.
When did you tell me? I don't remember 😛
precisely 2 months ago, when I had a similar problem but it was because the ia32-libs-gtk package was the obsolete one, and it still did not come out to complete the new ia32-libs, until I remember what you said and why am I going to add dpkg –add- architecture: i386 😛
Hahaha that was via IRC right?
the solution is to download the source code and compile, then generate the deb package and give it to the community
Great 🙂
Very good! Interesting…
Let's hope they fix the problem before the final version comes out.
Cheers! Paul.
I installed linux mint 14 64 bits and I had no problem installing Skype, only version 4.0 was installed
I'll see what else I have a problem with
