Survey Results: We're still struggling to make the leap to Linux

The results of the latest Let's Use Linux survey speak volumes: 65% of respondents admitted to continuing to use Windows on the machine on which they already have Linux installed. They use Windows either through dual-boot (37%) or using Wine (14%) or a virtual machine (14%). Only 33% left Windows completely.

It would be interesting to know: why haven't they been able to take the "big step" and leave Windows permanently?

Unfortunately, there are still many interesting applications that only work under Windows: Development environments for microcontrollers, games, music applications such as PixBox, telephone, etc.
On the other hand, although it is a problem of the regional and local administrations of Spain, for certain administrative procedures the use of Internet Explorer with specific ActiveX controls that are downloaded during the procedure is imperative. A can, yes, but it is reality.
For the rest, I only use GNU / Linux, (Debian), although not all the software I use is free, it doesn't have to be.
As for an example of an AutoCAD competitor, look at BricsCAD, from Bricsys, that its version 10 already has a fully functional beta for linux, a few months after being commercial, (approximately 10% of the cost of AutoCAD).
    A greeting.

In my case I would use GNU / Linux 100% if it weren't for the fact that in Chile 95% of companies, Ministries, Universities, Institutes and everything you can imagine work with Windows. Regarding Open Office, it really has very useful functions and I would say that it is better in certain aspects than MS Office, but with OO I can open Windows Doc. However, if I send a Curriculum for example, Windows users cannot see the Docs. by OO. Finally there are some Hardwares that do not operate under Linux (They are not supported); For example, I have a 1TB capacity Western Digital External DD that is not supported by Ubuntu and that nevertheless runs wonderfully under Windows and Mac. I contacted Wester Digital to find a solution and they only excused themselves for not being able to answer since their disks only run under the mentioned Software, for Linux there is no support (Nice answer). Obviously, after this there is an issue of alliances and monopolies between companies that would come as for another comment but the fact is that for these reasons I cannot get the happy Win from my PC. I hope one day to be able to do it definitively.

In my case it is impossible, I have not been able to open my mail, from the company I work for, it does not open Exange, the SAP version for java is already discontinued by SAP. Also ntlms is a big bug that is still not solved, I already tried everything, but unfortunately I can't, I have to use XP again. Sds.-

Hello, I am belong to that 33 percent that we definitely leave Windows. I have to tell you that since I left Windows my knowledge of Linux has increased day by day.

To those who use linux or dream of one day being true linux connoisseurs, I advise them to leave Windows forever, otherwise they will never be Linux experts or Windows experts.

Either hot or cold. Even God hates the lukewarm.

On the subject of games, I know that there are little games for Linux and I have the DJL with a few installed, but the good PC games they release are for windows, because otherwise with wine for spotify I have everything I want on my Ubuntu

    To "replace" spotify is http://listen.grooveshark.com/
For games… it is true that there are more for Windows, but there are also some good ones for Linux. Soon I will make a post about that.

There are some free alternatives to AutoCAD. I do not know if they will be super complete, but they serve:
    QCAD: http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad.html
    BRL-CAD: http://sourceforge.net/projects/brlcad/files/
    Archimedes: http://archimedes.incubadora.fapesp.br/portal/downloads
    Cheers! Paul.

    Hi marcos,
I am not sure what functionalities you are looking for, but there are other variants besides OpenOffice.
GNOME Office ( http://www.gnome.org/gnome-office/ ). It comes with Abiword and Gnumeric.
KOffice ( http://www.koffice.org/ ) It's the KDE one. It comes with KWord, KSpread, etc.

I remember that my brother who is an actuary (that is, he uses the more complicated statistics functions a lot) once told me that the "excels" of these alternatives are a little more complete.

In my case, do not hesitate to take the leap without thinking twice and the truth is that since then (for 2 or 3 years now) I do not want or return to private use anything that has to do with the unnameable.

Very interesting comment! Thank you for sharing your experience.
I tell you that here (in Argentina) it is the same. 🙁
    Hug! Paul.

damn open office, it is still much lower than ms office 2007
how I would like it to go really well.
I do not care about the compatibility with the ms office, but I care that it has all the options that the office has, with that it is enough to convince others that open office is better and free.
You could also do some business with google docs (or similar) to handle the same format (currently they are not sooo compatible with each other) so even if you do not have the open office somewhere you go, you can open the files well and at least read and edit them (it doesn't mean that the "online version" has all the features). Obviously, for this googles docs (or whatever) should release the code, so we are all happy 😉
(yes, I always write with many parentheses xD)

I'm going to try to see what those programs you recommended are up to.
As for the functionalities I am looking for, some examples that come to mind:
keyboard shortcuts are missing, for example the superscript or subscript. (Actually this is not missing, hehe, I just looked for it better and they are there, but when I had to use it it really made me angry enough not to find it xD)
Another thing that is missing (again, investigate and in the end this, although a bit hidden) is a better handling for images, for example being able to crop an image. The other day I had to do several print screens and with the ms office I cut them in 2 kicks.
concluding ... it lacks a more intuitive and efficient interface, to be able to do things faster, nothing more, it seems that the options have more or less all xD.
I don't know if the handling of tables is very good, maybe if xD

I have linux on all the computers, except for 2, on the laptop that I have with windows more than anything because I paid for it, and the one I use to play, I'm sorry but everything and games like HoN I still don't like to play on linux (I have entertaining games like World of Goo, or Heroes of Neverth or something like that) as soon as steam released its version for Linux, I will only stay with Windows to play Call of Duty 6 from time to time, since the The rest of the games that I have bought on that platform are compatible for mac and therefore will be for linux

Thank you so much for the links! I had already tried some, the best is undoubtedly BRL-CAD but it still lacks a little bit and for the office projects there is no choice but with AutoCAD. Is it too much to dream of a version for linux? I don't lose hope; D

    Hugs.

Mhhh I have left almost 100% windows for months… but I still use it on my laptop simply and simply for two things: because I don't just use the computer, because it helps me for presentations at the office and AUTOCAD.

I have win in a virtual machine, I say because I am going to take advantage of the money that I pay for both the windows and the AUTOCAD, and the truth is that although there are many good CAD options in linux, I still cannot find 100% performance
