Survey results: how long ago did you buy proprietary software?

In this post we analyze the results of the previous survey «How long ago did you buy your last proprietary program / game?«. We also publish the new survey of the month «Google+ is ...«. Do not forget to vote and leave us your opinion regarding this new Google endeavor.

Results of the previous survey

  • Never bought one: 311 votes (49.13%)
  • More than a year: 219 (34.6%)
  • Less than a year: 35 (5.53%)
  • Less than six months: 29 (4.58%)
  • Less than a month: 25 (3.95%)
  • Less than a week: 14 (2.21%)

Practically the half of the participants stated that he had never bought proprietary software. In itself, that is already interesting because, actually, We ALL buy Windows on duty + the programs that it brings by default when we buy our computer. It is the so-called «Microsoft tax«. They charge you in the price of the computer, without you having the possibility of buying one that comes without an operating system installed or that uses some variant of Linux. It is very striking that this fact has gone unnoticed by so many people. Likewise, it is a wake-up call, because you cannot fight what you do not know.

On the other hand, these results show the IMPORTANT influence of piracy in our countries. I mean, at some point we all go through Windows. Didn't they buy any proprietary software there either? It is clear that, if they had not done so, they downloaded pirated copies. This means that half of those who use Linux and free software come from never having bought any software. They always downloaded pirated copies of the software they needed for free. This could mean, in turn, that one of the greatest attractions of Linux has to do with its free and the possibility of downloading almost all its programs for free without the disadvantages of pirated software (viruses, cracks, serials, etc.).

Survey of the month

Google+ is Google's new social network in order to dethrone Facebook. It is not Google's first attempt to socialize all its applications (Wave, Buzz, etc). However, none of them have been as successful as Twitter and Facebook. Now we are in front of a new and powerful Google application with all the earmarks of a powerful social network including all the previous applications of it.

And you, how would you define Google+?

It also happened to me that I have bought Windows twice, in two laptops that I have bought. So I clarify my vote of "I never bought one", I never bought proprietary software that I would not have been "obliged" to buy, hence the Microsoft tax.

    All the best

Personally, the last original software I bought was the Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe Edition, and that was in December 2006, and two weeks before it was the Windows XP MCE 2005 that came with my current PC (yes, my PC is old ).

    After that, only free software.

Well, yes, a good part of Linux users are sure to come from the "free.com" generation, but what about it? If I remember that in high school, when I discovered the Internet, I was with the mentality of "everything on the Internet is free, music, programs ... I don't know why people buy them" but with time you mature and change your mind.

I was aware of the "Microsoft tax", so I voted "more than a year."
I think this survey should have indicated that software that comes pre-installed is not considered. Now the results are not of much use: it is not known if those who voted "more than a year" really went to buy software from a store or online, or it is only because they "came" with Windows installed, like me .
Let's agree that, if we get fussy, not even the person who buys PCs without OS or with Linux is really free of proprietary software, the BIOS that we ALL have is proprietary software. So "never bought one" should be 0% and again, the results are meaningless.
    A greeting!

Interesting what you mention. However, it is the new generations (of our children-linux 2.0) who could afford to say "I do not use proprietary software on my computer." My sister is 9 years old and 2 nephews between 4 and 6 years old (all in charge of my family nucleus) and they are one of the few children I know who can say that they do not use proprietary software on their computers (since we assembled their computers, the "microsoft tax" was not paid either), but the fact that we do not pay microsoft It does not mean that we do not frequently buy proprietary software at home, at work it is different: windows + autocad is the law, and until they deign to get an Autocad for linux for me it works and Bricscad works very well for several thousand dollars less and for DraftSight house that for what I do I have plenty (eye is exclusive, free but exclusive; D)

And so I can name a thousand examples and as Eduardo Battaglia points out, we all pay for proprietary software (for hardware) or use it ... or Is the entire Linux kernel 100% free? I'm not afraid of the SP, if it gives me a better option than the free one I use it without hesitation and when the SL gives me what I need I use it with pride, using one is not against using another, for example my favorite browser is Opera = D

    As always excellent entry.

PS: I love the answer "one more step from Skynet to take over the world" XD

mmm… the last program I bought I didn't really buy it… in 2006 I bought a PC and they ended up getting Panda Antivirus… I was in love and my girlfriend at that time found it important to use protection, what was she going to do… the other The program that I bought was at 14 years old (I am 28) a game the Tie Fighte, r of the Star Wars, the rest has been achieved with the eye patch until I landed on Linux.

    Greetings community.

    I never paid that tax = D
Never in twenty years have I bought (bah .. me or my old man, who was in the garden for twenty haha) a machine with legal OS. In fact, the only original software I ever had - and still have - is a copy of the Test Drive 5 that came with a GeForce 2 MX / 200 from 10 years ago.

Well, I have not bought any original software, the computers that I have had I have assembled myself, and I got my lap without OS

Still, the secure BIOS was proprietary.
At the FSF, one of the priority projects is precisely that: building a free BIOS.
