Sway 1.5 comes with wlr compatibility, output to systems without a monitor and more

The launch of the new version of the administrator sway 1.5 It is which is built using the Wayland protocol and is also fully compatible with the i3 window manager and the i3bar panel.

In this new version of Sway 1.5 they were registered near 284 changes, Ya que introduces many new features, but also contains numerous bug fixes. Of the new changes the possibility of generating an output in systems without a monitor is highlighted, as well as the support for the viewporter protocol, among other things.

About Sway

For those unaware of Sway, you should know that this is an administrator what is developing as a modular project built on top of the wlroots library, A containing all the basic primitives for organizing the work of the composite manager.

Wlroots includes backends to abstract access to the screen, input devices, render without directly accessing OpenGL, interact with KMS / DRM, libinput, Wayland and X11 (a layer is provided to start Xwayland-based X11 applications).

Besides Sway, the wlroots library is actively used in other projects as well, including Librem5 and Cage. In addition to C / C ++, folders have been developed for Scheme, Common Lisp, Go, Haskell, OCaml, Python, and Rust.

The project code is written in C and distributed under the MIT license. The project is designed for use on Linux and FreeBSD.

Regarding compatibility, Sway has guaranteed compatibility with i3 at the command level, configuration files and IPC, allowing you to use Sway as a transparent replacement for i3, using Wayland instead of X11.

Sway allows you to place windows on the screen logicallyand. The windows are arranged to form a grid that optimally utilizes screen space and allows you to quickly manipulate the windows with just the keyboard.

To organize a complete user environment, the accompanying components are provided:

  • swayidle (background process with KDE idle protocol implementation)
  • swaylock (screen saver)
  • Mako (notification manager)
  • Grim(tool dedicated to screenshots)
  • Slurp (selecting an area on the screen)
  • wf recorder (takes care of the video capture)
  • Way bar (An application bar)
  • virtualboard (takes care of the on-screen keyboard)
  • wl-clipboard (to work with the clipboard)
  • wallutils (desktop background control).

What's new in Sway 1.5?

In this new version of Sway 1.5 we can find two great features that could be considered the most important of this release and is that one of them is the ability to dynamically organize the output on systems without a monitor using the create_output command (can be used to organize remote desktop access via WayVNC).

The other feature that stands out is the compatibility added to the protocol top-level management wlr (wlr-foreign-toplevel), which allows custom window docks and switches.

On the other hand, in this new version it is highlighted that it is now possible to enable adaptive sync (VRR, Variable Refresh Rate) to reduce image jitter in games.

While for virtualization systems and remote access to the desk they already count with the opportunity to intercept keyboard combinations.

Also added support for the viewporter protocol, which improves the performance and quality of the work of old games.

And through the Wayland protocols, the input and text input methods support the input method editor (IME).

Very good WM. I loved. At the moment I had to switch to I3 for work issues where Wayland is not yet mature enough, for example sharing screens where you have to do certain tricks to achieve it. On my personal computer I will surely reinstall it.
