Testing Google Chrome OS

Eager to test Google Chrome OS? Well, now it is possible to test nightly builds in Virtualbox, VMWare and even on your USB stick, without spending hours trying (unsuccessfully) to compile the system.

How about? Should Ubuntu shake?

What is Google Chrome OS?

Google Chrome OS is a project carried out by the Google company to develop a web-based operating system. Through its official blog, Google announced on July 7, 2009 that Google Chrome OS will be a system made based on open source (Linux Core) and initially oriented for mini-notebooks, being available in June 2011.3 It will work on microprocessors with x86 technology or ARM.

Can i prove it?

Until now, testing it was quite a difficult task: it needed to be compiled, and this can be very cumbersome, especially for "newbies" or "lazy" like one. However, there are ChromeOS images to be used on a pendrive, in Virtualbox or in VMWare.

To enjoy a better experience, it is advisable to first try with the images to be used on a USB stick. In case they don't work, you can try the images for Virtualbox or VMWare. In case you decide on Virtualbox, it is advisable to allocate> 2 GB of RAM. The amount of memory that this system eats up is impressive.

To use the Chrome OS vdi file, download it and unzip. In Virtualbox, click the New button. In Operating System, I chose Linux and in Version, I chose Ubuntu.

On the screen to choose the virtual hard disk, select "Use an existing hard disk" and browse for the Chrome OS vdi file.

Well, the truth is that I expected something better from google, the truth is that I don't even think Ubuntu sees it as a threat for now and for a while

2 GB of RAM? I thought that originally this OS was being developed, for some computers with few resources, hence it works almost entirely in the cloud, right? well, anyway, I'm not an expert on this, but I'm intrigued that it consumes so much memory, it's too much ...

  4.   Let's use Linux said

It intrigues me too ... I thought the same as you, but apparently it consumes a lot of memory (at least when using it under virtualbox).
    Cheers! Paul.

I fully agree. This would be Stallman dixit.
    Cheers! Paul.

The RAM consumption thing is very rare. I don't know why ... 🙁
    Cheers! Paul.

Pablo, with this post you just created a need for me ... hahaha ... I'm very curious and I already have it in download to see how it goes ...

I chose USB because I don't have a virtual machine ... my computer is 100% ubuntu and I also don't have that waste of RAM

We will see to try it just to see how it looks ... it will not replace my dear ubuntu what they offer is not a philosophy that I approve without fuss ...

Finally, I totally agree with all the comments on this post, especially with the one written by Saito

It seems to me that it uses a lot of Ram memory, to be derived from Linux, it is also annoying that it is handled through a web browser, I already tried it and I do not think it is a competition for some Linux distributions, example (Debian, Ubuntu, Opensuse), also if you do not have internet it is very annoying because it is based on Clouds…. So there is a need to improve in many aspects ...

I think it is aimed at a generation of computers that are totally portable, lightweight, that only have enough software to access the network and everything, EVERYTHING else is obtained through that connection, that piece of hardware would be something like a video player. means that it downloads from the TODO network to operate. Is it a harbinger of the demise of hard drive storage?

I think that information security is something that has already been solved, that is why there are Data Warehouse, VPN and encryption solutions, banks already do it with your information, why not provide the service with the cost of the connection to the network or something? Have you wait, is it like this? and if they have it, then a personal server or something similar is left ...

As for it to work on a browser, well it is because of its approach to networks, for simplicity and compatibility with "any computer", for now of course this, then it will log on to the network and that's it, but I can't talk much about that Well, so far I'm testing it.

I only have the doubt of whether under this operating model in the cloud, it can be called an operating system ...

I think that, it must be because it is used under vitualBox = /….

I don't think (or I don't want to believe xD) that it uses that much by itself!

    =S

What is the need for a person to put their data "in the cloud" managed by a private company?

save resources? In this age when computing and memory capacities are doubling every year?

have a super dependence on the internet to write a text, no thanks.

I agree. However, even though I agree with you and Stallman in thinking that the cloud is bad ... it has one great advantage: file synchronization. From anywhere I can access my documents or files, agenda, emails, etc. This is a major advantage over "regular" software. Anyway ... it's a long discussion ...
    Cheers! Paul.

As for the data, not so much because Facebook and all mail managers already have a lot of our data, as for what you mention about the internet it is true:

What is the purpose of buying a computer if the only thing it is used for (if there is no internet) is for a doorstop? As we well know, this OS is aimed at nations where the speed is more than 20 Gb otherwise I do not see sense of it and more if, like in my Mexico, the internet fails more than the soccer team the penalties XD

I think Google was wrong and although it will take years to realize it, it would have opted for a traditional OS with a priority for synchronization with the cloud, that would be interesting, google docs as an office suite would be a striking alternative, in the same way that the rest of your services would be.

Why this other thing: with US laws, who prevents them from getting their hands on my data? or delete them if they discover that I made an "illegal" copy of that album that I love but is scratched from playing so much.

I tried it out of curiosity ... first I was surprised (like you guys) the amount of resources it needs to function (let's not say well) but moderately.

After the experience: it is not that I would not imagine that the OS is designed for social networks and the cloud, but it is still a shock not to have "the minimum" that one considers an OS (I had never tried Chrome OS).

If this is the future of operating systems, then what dinosaur figure, I prefer the traditional.

I believe that, more than a free alternative to microsoft, it is the dream of internet companies; absolute dependence on the internet even to open a text file, and the dream of google ... unlimited personal data $.

I don't know about me, I tried it too and that my data is stored in the cloud ...... I'm not very funny, I remember I saw a video where they did an interview with R. Stallman and he also said that having your data in the cloud in view of anyone was not very ethical. We will see later.

So google looks very good but it has many problems because it cannot be installed as the main system or host of another system, another problem is the audio drivers that it does not have or the system does not recognize, in other words there is no sound, another problem is not being able to install personal utilities, so no tutorials to do so

I recently bought a samsung chromebook, and I have to say that NOTHING to do with the Chrome OS that I had simulated on my pc. I had simulated it on an octacore 16gb ram PC and it didn't work fast. the chromebook with only 2GB of ram and a low processor, enough to start up in 7 seconds and be fully working, you click on the browser and you start using it, excellent truth.
