Testing Ubuntu 12.04 [Review] + Download + Solution for NVidia

Last April 26, Ubuntu 12.04 as many of us know, although in our blog we did not cover the news due to different situations that conspired against our time.

At FLISOL we had the opportunity to copy the .iso de Bits 32 and today I decided to test it using a flash memory like LiveCD. That is why now I bring you my first impressions, clarifying several points first of all so that no user of Ubuntu is offended:

  1. I did the test with 1GB of RAM, Intel Celeron 2.66 GHz processor and Intel graphics.
  2. I did the test from a memory Flash as LiveCD so the consumption is a little higher.
  3. I did the test with the iso without updating any packages.

Having clarified these three points, let's go to my observations.

Remarks:

Against U I must say several things. It feels very slow, switch apps or run some like Firefox it takes several seconds, just like switching windows using the key combination [Alt] + [Tab], a certain heaviness is noted in the transitions and in the Lens.

I could notice an excessively high consumption, it almost rode on 400MB with almost nothing open. He Dock (with auto-hide option) It "hangs" when I try to open it, having to move the cursor several times to the edge of the screen for it to be displayed. HUD works great, but when I activate FullScreen en Gedit, I cannot deactivate it later, leaving the upper bar of Gedit onscreen. I was only able to remove it by closing the app.

I like the simplicity of Appearance Manager, to choose the wallpaper, the gtk theme and the size of the icons Dock It is very easy, but I was left with a question. Where do I configure the System fonts and their size?

NVidia issues

This version of Ubuntu has had problems with some cards NVidia, especially the Geforce 6 *** y Geforce 7 ***. The temporary measure now is to use the following PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current=295.33-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1

We must also bear in mind that the package cannot be marked nvidia-current in the Update Manager, otherwise it will reinstall the version 295.40. [Source]

Not everything is bad, U it behaved very well, quite fast and much more fluid than the 3D version, although the effect or transition when we activated the desktops did not quite convince me. The artwork is still beautiful and I especially liked the theme of LightDM. I did not like that in this variant the Dock cannot be customized and for some reason the applet of the Bluetooth it did not appear in the top panel.

These are some of the things that I could see at first glance. It is clear that there is still a long way to go Ubuntu 12.04 be "stable." Many updates will have to come and all for that mania of not delaying the releases, although the result so far is crap.

If you want to download UbuntuWell, you know, in the following link you will have how to do it:

I updated it from 11.10 and it was fine for me. The truth is that I don't use it much (I prefer to use chakra). I like the changes in lightdm and I have not noticed that it is slower.

"In our blog we did not cover the news due to different situations that conspired against our time."

Anyway the results of the survey prove that most of us did not care much or did not care completely. 😛

    1.    Windousian said

The survey does not seem very well focused to me. I don't care if Ubuntu 12.04 is released on April 26 and it doesn't motivate me in any way. Just as I am not motivated by the launch of a new Fedora, openSUSE or Mandriva. That lack of motivation does not mean that it is a relevant fact.
Anyway, you can interpret the results in another way, but I see it like this: It does not matter to know that Ubuntu came out to 15 + 1 = 16% of voters. 52% did care (most) and the rest (myself included) did not care (32%).

      1.    Manual of the Source said

What i said was "the mayority they didn't care much o we did not care completely«; that is:

They didn't care much (they did care, but little) = Yes, a little: 27%
We did not care completely = Not much, I do not care + No + No kidding !! that can't be called a distro: 48%

        TOTAL = 75%

And the fact that it was a relevant event does not mean that there was very little emotion about it.

        1.    Windousian said

I repeat you, you can interpret the results in another way (I express it to you without acrimony). Now, my vote was for "not much ..." and it does not seem reasonable to me that you put it together with "no" and "no kidding" ... They are very different options. If you ask your friends "Are we going to the movies to see Transformers 8?" and together with those who answer "no" with "I don't care", to say that the majority do not feel like it ... well, okay. Let's not give it more lapses, it is another point of view.

The survey allows your / my interpretation because the possible answers were not well defined and the question is understood however you want. I'm sure the same would happen with the premiere of any distribution that releases new versions like hotcakes.

          1.    Manual of the Source said

In any case, there were more who expressed indifference or negativity than those who were excited about the launch, and I doubt that if the question had been posed differently the trend would have been different.

        2.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

It is a survey done honestly, without much malice ... it did not pretend to be the most accurate or whose results reveal the ABC of life 😀
It is simply a survey to find out what our readers think, I put it because personally I was tired of reading dozens of times the same thing with the same thing ... that if Ubuntu came out, that if Ubuntu 12.04, that if Ub ... AA, believe me I was fed up That's why I put the survey, to find out if more users thought like me, if it bothered them that only those were talked about on that day, and any other article was simply omitted 🙂

          1.    Windousian said

@ KZKG ^ Gaara, a "Are you interested in the official Ubuntu 12.04 release?" Answers: "Yes", "No" and "I don't care, I don't care. By putting two "Sís" and two "Nos" we already made it.
Later, the "you care or motivate" thing caused me to drop in sugar. I imagined a degenerate "getting motivated" by Ubuntu's release, asking her relative for war while thinking about pangolins. That is not done KZK […].

            1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

              HAHAHAHA my bad 😀
Well, what are you going to do now ... for the next time I will think more before putting a survey, so the options will be less complex.

something like that I commented on twitter and they called me crazy muajajajaja

Anyway, I take the opportunity to say that I am completely disappointed in this version. I will wait for Luna, which at least is more beautiful to look at.

          3.    Manual of the Source said

Those kinds of things have motivated me. It has ever happened to me that I am having a bad day and the only thing that keeps me going is knowing that when I return home I will be able to try that new service or that update that I read in the morning. 🙂

They are not going to leave me now that I am the only one Geek to what happened and that you have no idea what I'm talking about. 😛

          4.    Windousian said

@Manuel de la Fuente, when something is repeated often loses emotion.

Either way, there were more who expressed indifference or negativity than those who were excited about the launch.

With that phrase you leave out the "Yes, a little", because you cannot put them in the bag of indifferent or negative. The truth is that if you add the "Yes" you have 52%. You can tell that most were not euphoric about Ubuntu's exit, but not that most were showing disinterest.
A narrowing down of the answers would give a clearer result. Either you are interested or you are not.

I installed this version, I did a basic mimina and kde installation, mail fine, although the boot is slow once started it goes very well, it is worth mentioning that despite having 4 gb of ramm (it had 8 but it broke a 4 card) the Unity happened to me like you, since it got stuck at times and was somewhat slow.

I have had the aforementioned problems with Nvidia. As soon as I get home I'll try the drivers you mentioned, to see if it works better that way. Anyway, Unity2d works very well.

    1.    Quito said

I did the test and now Unity works for me. I hope that also fixes the crashes (of Unity). As for the speed, at times it gets stuck, it is not completely smooth, but it is enough for me.

I have the nvidia 295.40 drivers in openSUSE (from the repository) on a series 7 card and they work fine in KDE4.7.4 as well as in chakra.

    What is wrong with Ubuntu?

    1.    Courage said

Everything fails in Ubuntu, that is not a distro nor is it «na»

      1.    sieg84 said

The version with xfce is somewhat decent. But yes, that unity is heavier than kde4 and it even has the usability of the latter.

I have to download the iso and try it 😀

      2.    mdrvro said

Exactly Courage I support your comment, that a distro so "heavy and slow" is a public danger that this distro is the entrance to the linux world of many users. I keep testing each release they release and it works "too much everything half way" even though they say that they release an efficient product and that it works "all perfect" vamoooossss ... I've also tried it on three computers with different hardware and it always brings problems and not Yes with Chakra that is very good, well it also has some flaws but they are small and easy to solve.

    2.    elav <° Linux said

Apparently it's something with Compiz ..

and some will say but you can install gnome shell .. in fact I did it and normal .. the gnome shell also comes with linux mint .. and I can choose between cinnamon and gnome shell ..

the truth the truth .. I did not want to see anything orange or brown on my pc for any stop ^^

  10.   kondur-05 said

I have it in a minilapop vit with 1 gig of ram, if it runs a little slow, but the unity does not look as problematic as before.

  11.   ubuntero said

go! I have not had problems! Except for the upgrade with the compiz, which I already solved, everything is fine and fluid for me, I had to use the bumblebee project with the proprietary Nvidia drivers, I have stayed with Unity because I like the minimum space saving because of the integrated menus, but I have achieved very attractive configurations with Gnome Shell.

I think and defend that Canonical has moved away from the "basic" and "old" equipment, since I have even seen that they test their changes on "Mac" computers which have very powerful hardware.

    Regards!

There are "non-Mac" computers that spin around Apple's most powerful toy. If they use a "Mac" it will be by design.

A clarification. The same thing happened to me as to ELAV with the auto-hide bar. It turns out that it is a system to prevent the bar from coming out unintentionally if by mistake (or normal use) we get close to that edge of the screen. Resistance can be set. The operation for the bar to appear is, not only to touch the edge, but to push more until the bar comes out. In fact you can see a dark shadow moving forward until the hidden bar finally comes out.

I have 3 days ago on my Ubuntu 12.04 Laptop with Unity 2D because the graphics is no longer compatible with 3D.

Apart from that little trifle, the Precise Pangolin works great for me, no complaints.

The only downside that I see with this ubuntu is that it does not go shopping for me, it does not prepare my food or do the housework for me, otherwise perfect 😉

I think that a prestigious Linux site like this should not marginalize a Linux distro and treat the ubuntu issue with the same seriousness and professionalism as other distros 😉

Believe me that is how it is done, what happens is that we try not to fall into the inbreeding that prevails in other places where only people speak well of Ubuntu. It seems to me that the comments made by elav they are fairly objective, and furthermore you admit the hardware limitations that occurred to you during testing.

      1.    elav <° Linux said

Thank you Tina for being so exact in your comment. It is true that sometimes (In my particular case) I post things according to my personal preferences (as in the case of Xfce), but you have to understand two things:

1- A blog is just that, everyone talks about what they want, because there is no rule that imposes on what topic to deal with (unless it is clear that it is thematic).
2- Unfortunately due to certain limitations that I have, I cannot speak of other distributions or their applications, so it is impossible to please everyone.

It is because of that <° Linux It is open to all those who want to collaborate and transmit their personal experiences.

@Tina Toledo, taking advantage of the fact that I read your comment, I would like to ask you a question, what do you think of the complement "Separate for GIMP"? Does it serve to alleviate the problem with CMYK in GIMP? I have tested it and it separates the images into four layers (cyan, magenta, ...).

        1.    Tina Toledo said

          Hi Windousian!
It is very likely that it works very well, I have tried to install it and I have never done a good job ... it has never worked for me. Separate + looks great: you have options to choose the conversion purposes and final color spaces based on profiles ICC de Adobe.
My only dilemma in recommending it is not so much its functionality in practical terms, but its relative -I stress: relative- Difficulty for an average designer to install it, based on the idea that I consider myself an average user and I have never managed to install it successfully.

          1.    Windousian said

In Ubuntu there is a package called "gimp-plugin-registry" that installs this plugin (along with many others). I installed it from a package manager without any problem.

            1.    Tina Toledo said

In fact, I installed it that way: it has a great variety of filters and effects, but not that one in particular. It is very likely that I am doing something wrong, or that something is missing from my system, to deploy that functionality.

          2.    Windousian said

I found it in "Image> Separate" but I am not fluent in the "CMYK" topic. The configuration options sound like Chinese to me.

I tried this new version of Ubuntu and the performance seemed disastrous; however with Kubuntu they have, in my opinion, done a great job. Although it is not as light as Debian + KDE, it runs quite smooth, barely crashes (I wish I could say the same as unity) and is quite comfortable to use.

    Personal opinion.

I started in Linux thanks to Ubuntu, out of curiosity I asked for a live cd on the internet and after 3 weeks it arrived, I got out of a huge problem that I had with my hard drive, so expensive at that time; I explain ...

It happens that in a format with the windows a nose was damaged that .. when I took it to the technical service they told me that it was no longer useful at all, just in those days the cd arrived, the only thing I did was put it in the reader, I turned on the cpu (with the "bad" disk included) instantly began to appear messages, letters and numbers unintelligible to a common person, the only thing he could read was ERROR ERROR.

  19.   nxs.davis said

I was too scared I wanted to turn off the machine but it could not ...

then I thought I disconnected the power! And just in those moments the message changed. SOLVED SOLVED and then you can imagine, the ubuntu logo came out and some problem on the disk was solved.

I actually appreciate that distro in a special way, for the moment I was going through when I met it. Although I know that what solved my problem were the GNU tools that are in every distro. Today I can say that I tried many distros but in the end I always return to Ubuntu.

And maybe it is the only one around here but I like unity a lot. I carry it on my laptop and it works like a charm, how much difference with last year's unity.

I can say that I use fedora, openSuse, Chakra and Debian, Arch I could only install it in a virtual machine, in the end I don't like any of them and I always go back to Ubuntu.

    1.    Windousian said

you say it for the avatar? I like your posts about XFCE I am talking to you from Xubuntu everything is going very well, I also installed Ubuntu and I have an Nvidia graphics card and everything is going well, I liked this version of Unity I think there are details to be polished but in general I like it and everything is going well, I have not had any problems.

      Greetings Odos:
First of all thanks for commenting. Answering your question: Yes, I consider that a test carried out on LiveCD should be useful, as I remind you, that for that reason there is this option, to "try" without having to install. I'm not new to this Ubuntu It has precisely shown me that the consumption in LiveCD, and the previously installed consumption does not vary much, and of course, I am not going to reinstall my system just "to test", because in fact, not even VirtualBox could give me 100% reliable data.

Xubuntu If it has left me a pleasant taste after trying it, precisely, through a LiveCD. I think they have really polished it and I can only see, if the same happened with Kubuntu.

Well nothing, thanks once more for stopping by and for your comment.

I was looking forward to trying this new Ubuntu release; and I downloaded and installed it from the day the final version was available.

In the days that I have been using the Precise Pangoline, I have been quite satisfied. I think the HUD is great and, in general, Unity has matured a lot and I consider it a great success from Canonical (I hope that soon Unity will be available for other distros and will stop being exclusive to Ubuntu).

What I have not liked, so far, is that I feel that the dash does not appear as fast as I would like (although, in fact, I prefer to use synapse to launch applications and files, in this distro or in any other)

However I have been able to verify fierce opinions regarding Ubuntu and more specifically about Unity. Many resentments because the distribution that has been used for years suddenly changes course and is no longer understood or does not fit what we thought it should be. It will take a long time for Ubuntu to be what it was. But to no doubt that it will manage to become one. And it is that perfection does not exist. . or if?. Ubuntu is made by humans. Are we humans perfect? Did Miguel Angel manage to create La Piedad to perfection? You answer since it seems that you understand a lot.

I am delighted with this new ubuntu… .It is very configurable, although it means having to install several little programs for this purpose (My unity, Gnome tweak, ubuntu tweak…) .. But it is effective. (Sorry, mint, we can't get stuck in cinnamon and less in matte).
A curiosity: Since Ati (amd) has announced that it stops giving support and drivers to several series of cards, I have ordered an Nvidia GT 440 (around 50 leuros) and right now I begin to hear that there are problems with the Nvidia. The flexibility, effectively goes through neighborhoods!

Hello, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on 2 machines (a Sony Vaio, and an Acer) on the sony there were no problems in recognizing everything, with Unity it pulls decent, but I installed Gnome Shell
and it really flies, Unity still needs to polish it and lighten it more, With the Acer I installed everything normal, and Unity gave a lot of trouble, it was slowing down and the Ram rose up to 1,2 GB, consumption and heated up like a fifteen-year-old kid watching Porn, The video card of this machine is an ATI and the processor an AMD, and I installed Gnome Shell so when I started it with Shell surprise it pulled wonderfully I do not know if the Gnome Shell problems with the ATI cards have been corrected, and the machine without failures and without heating. I hope and with the updates something strange does not come out.
