The best Argentine Linux distributions

The vast majority of us probably know just a few of the most popular distros: Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, Arch, and a few more. However, there is a wide range of possibilities; distros that have much less press but are not of lower quality for that. In this opportunity, I present to you the best "Argentine distros".

ututo

UTUTE is a distribution of the GNU operating system, using the Linux-libre kernel. The name refers to a species of lizard (Homonota borelli, Gekkonidae) from the north of Argentina. Ututo was the first distribution to be recognized as totally free by the GNU Project.

On October 27, 2006, the UTUTO project was declared of National Interest by the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation.

music

Musix GNU + Linux is a Linux distribution presented on LiveCD Live-DVD and Live-USB based on Knoppix, Kanotix and Debian. For this reason and to eliminate the proprietary software contained in their mother distributions it is considered a 100% free operating system. It is mainly intended for musicians, artists in general, and was prepared for artistic teaching in classrooms. It is one of the first (and one of the few) Linux distributions recognized as 100% free by the Free Software Foundation.

The initiator of the project and co-director of the same together with the Brazilian Gilberto Gorges at present is the Argentine Marcos Germán Guglielmetti, accompanied by a group of a dozen developers such as the Spanish Daniel Vidal Chornet or José Antonio González García. Musix GNU + Linux is also the result of the collaborative work of a whole community of users and programmers, starting in Argentina but managing to bring together an international group made up of Brazilians, Spanish, Uruguayans, Americans, Mexicans, Costa Ricans, etc.

dragora

Dragora is a GNU / Linux distribution focused on freedom, language (Spanish), stability and security. It has the peculiarity of having been developed in Argentina without being based on any other previous distribution, with some characteristics similar to Slackware. Dragora is one of the distributions recommended by the Free Software Foundation, Ya que it is 100% free software. It is compiled for the i686 architecture, which gives it a great adaptation between processors, thus ensuring the correct operation in different architectures.

Dragora's philosophy

KISS philosophy: The KISS principle is an acronym that corresponds to the phrase in English: "Keep It Short and Simple". It is the traditional Unix philosophy to keep things simple.

YAGNI philosophy: YAGNI is an acronym that corresponds to the phrase in English: "You Ain't Gonna Need It". It is a Software development philosophy that consists of NOT adding functionality unless necessary.

DRY philosophy: DRY is an acronym that corresponds to the phrase in English: "Do not repeat yourself" (Don't Repeat Yourself). It is a software development philosophy that promotes that the pieces of information are NOT duplicated. Probably the least used concept by the project, but one that is taken into account.

It is a distribution that is based on GNOME, with its own modifications in the kernel and that will soon be available for download; unfortunately due to host problems, we still can't download it; but it will be as appropriate.

Shame is not knowing the history of the working class of your country: no one is truly free if they are not willing to help the liberation of others. We all have the opportunity to express ourselves, always with respect. That's why I feel comfortable visiting this blog, and recommending ER, as it is a quality distro; even positively reviewed by Distrowatch. It is the only thing I am going to say on the subject. Best regards to all.

  2.   Anonimous said

Haha. These left-handers are incredible, well, dear Chango, there is an Argentine majority that does not adhere to your dreams of a communist narco-villera dictatorship, what are you going to do, the flag of Argentina is light blue and white, not a red cloth. Apart from this, I was curious about this pro terrorist distro, we must admit that they are original, who would have thought of it?

  3.   tux said

Anonimous, like Carlos26, they have no idea what they are talking about, it is a distribution and according to Chango it works well, as for the communist narco villera, the truth hurts me, and poor your family if they think and they are people without education that does not know how to differentiate one thing from the other and pays attention to what happens on CNN. Cheers

  4.   Debian said

Sorry, but if you don't know history, don't talk, I'm tired of people who don't open a book and start commenting on a subject that doesn't have the slightest idea. And if you are ashamed of being Argentine, you can go where you already know, around the United States to discriminate against you and realize that you live in a cloud of fart. It is a distribution only, if you don't like the wallpaper and the icons you can change it, in case you don't know yet.

  5.   luchus said

If you didn't try it, don't talk and go live in the USA if you don't like it ... facho ...

  6.   kirtash1197 said

I didn't know any of them, so maybe I'll try some.
    Good job with your blog!

Great Eärendil, this post will serve to recognize the work of Argentine distros that have nothing to envy other projects in the world. On the other hand, I wanted to point out another distro, it is not Argentine, but it greatly facilitates the task for those who wanted to use Slackware and found it difficult either by myth or truth. It is called Salix OS, "the bonsai system", and it is oriented to the desktop (very light thanks to its Xfce and LXDE versions), both for professional and home use (but also works perfectly on laptops).

    http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/Home

Hopefully you find it interesting to add to your slackware-derived Distros section. Regards.

  12.   Chango said

Oops, I forgot to tell you that Salix OS is very well translated into Spanish, and supports many Spanish-speaking countries, greetings.

Thank you very much Chango for sharing this info! I will take it into account for a future post.

I want to add Huayra, it seems to be a new project and that is why it is not here, but it is also Argentine.

For those interested in Huayra, I recommend reading our review on this distro: http://usemoslinux.blogspot.com/2012/12/probamos-huayra-linux-la-distro-del.html

It is what makes extremism sick, what the hell does the photo of Che Guevara do, a murderer who is only well seen in Argentina and Cuba and a few hung "rockers" who don't understand a damn what the communist dictatorship was and still is . It's totally ridiculous. I support the freedom to express yourself but this kind of thing makes me extremely ashamed of being Argentine.

Hi Eärendil, don't forget Red Star GNU / Linux, a very complete and fast Debian Lenny based distro:

Too bad Tuquito is stained with the name of Mauro Torres, one of the people who had a phishing site on his server where Tuquito was hosting. A shame

I always see the same comments, and although I don't usually pay attention, today I'm going to give my opinion. We Argentines believe that we are the best in everything, we live in a cloud of erroneous beliefs, which does not dissipate until we leave the country. I'm not talking about leaving Argentina, I'm talking about leaving the American continent. Australia, New Zealand, Asia. Believe me, we are not the best, there are people much more innovative than us, but they will not see it until they leave the continent. It is also true that we have developed very good things that are highly recognized in many places. But we will continue in the stupidity of memory, living in the past and reproaching the military for the dictatorship, the left-handers for the attacks. As long as they continue stealing, and "the outsiders will eat us." It is understood?
By the way Debian, which talks about the fact that there are people who will never "open" a book, "savías" is written with B for a donkey, many books can be opened, but among them they have to "see" a dictionary.

I am currently using Windows 7. I should have formatted but my notebook did not have the original software and I was installed one that was not and I do not like how it works. One of my sons advised me on Linux. I have little or no understanding of the subject and would like advice on which one is best for me. The machine is for personal use at home. I also need an equivalent to the Office package since I use some programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point.
    I appreciate your response.

      Suzanne,
Alternatives for micro $ soft office are libreoffice (you can try it on any system including guindou $) and openoffice among the highlighted ones, but there is more; they both have power point. Foxit pdf reader would be the alternative (and for me it is even better and I use it) for pdf. If it is for that type of use along with surfing the internet and some other little thing, you have endless distributions available to venture. I am testing the trisquel 7.0 distro that has livecd mode (you can use it by starting it in the pc boot without installing anything with a dvd with the image inside or a usb), if you take the video card and input wifi no longer you have to configure nothing and it comes with libreoffice installed, among other things (web browser, video player, gnash, etc). Good luck and I hope this info will help you.

Again I write to comment that my notebook is 32 b. Maybe it is important.

    Thank you
