Best Alternative Icon Packs for Linux

The icon themes that come by default on some Linux distributions are just plain ugly. Although they work well, they could look a lot better. Fortunately, we can fix this quite easily. Here is a short list of the most popular alternative icon packs.

Moka

Moka Icons

Moka is one of the most used icon themes. It is clean and very well designed as all the icons are the same size and square shape with rounded corners. It is also one of the most complete themes.

Faience / Faenza

Faience Icons

Faenza / Faience are a couple of icon themes made by the same artist -tiheum-, which have achieved great popularity in the Linux community. The design concept in both cases is very similar to Moka, but they also include darker themes that can fit nicely with light desktop themes.

awoken

Awoken Icons

Awoken follows a completely different design concept, as it doesn't use square icons for everything. At first, Awoken gained popularity because its icons were designed in grayscale. Since then the theme has evolved to include colored icons, as well as dark and white themes. His detractors accuse him of looking a bit cartoonish, but the truth is that this icon pack has a very elaborate design.

Numix / Numix Circle

Numix Icons

Numix returns to a square icon concept. The colors used in this theme are very attractive and the number of icons available is truly overwhelming. For those who do not like square icons, Numix Circle is also available which, as the name implies, uses rounded icons. The simplicity in the design of both themes is a really attractive factor, especially for those who prefer minimalism.

Nitrox

Nitrux Icons

Nitrux is also based on square icons but, unlike Numix, these are not flat.

Elementary

Elementary Icons

Elementary OS has been getting a ton of attention from the Linux community in recent months. Part of the reason is that it's a just great looking distro. The icon theme has something to do with it. It's definitely one of the most elegant and polished icon themes, with a style reminiscent of Mac OS X.

Mac

Mac icons

There's no denying that Mac OS X icons look good, so it's no surprise that someone tried to clone the appearance of Apple's operating system. This is not a perfect copy of the icons used in Mac OS X, but the inspiration is clear enough. If you like Apple icons, then this is a good icon pack.

Revelation: Dalisha

Dalisha icons

Dalisha is a fairly comprehensive flat and circular icon theme, with over 300 icons available. It is based on Moka and, as you can see, it is a very beautiful theme, with a very interesting design.

While some of the themes presented here are also available for KDE, those who use that desktop environment may prefer icon themes specially designed for it. Some examples of popular topics are: Flamini, To evolve, etc.

Excellent! Very good I will download some for my Fedora! right now I use Numix 😉

    Good. The contribution is appreciated.

However, FaenzaFlattr, the most complete of all, was missing. If any / mime-type application is missing, ask the creator for it, and he will have it for you for the next release. Guaranteed. I say it because I've done it before, and it sticks with it. That is why I use it. Besides, it comes in different variants.

The post is still appreciated 😀

Over here a fan of FaenzaFlattr ... combines with almost all DE. Now I use them in Antergos Cinnamon and I love them 😀

I love Numix. Especially the circular icons that can be installed for free, but I did not like that in the last update they painted the icons of the folders -in nautilus- a not sober yellow. Opening the browser and making it look like a 4 year old girl's laptop is not something that I really like haha. Still I prefer it more than the original Ubuntu theme.

It is not trolling but I think that pack would be for GNU / Linux. I don't think a kernel like LINUX needs it.

    1.    paul honorato said

      * biting the hook *

The name GNU / Linux or GNU + Linux leaves the GNU tools above the essential component of the operating system, the kernel.

I think a kind of sect has formed between free software users and fans of Stallman and the FSF (GNUists). That's why when I look for free software, I try not to be from GNU, because at this point it disgusts me. Worse than Windows, which I can use and tolerate. The devil is Stallman, who basically proposes to impose HIS philosophy of how the opensource model should be.

I hope that a free GNU Linux will soon be possible, that they will stay with their spawn called linux-libre, which has little of free (not in code).

      1.    Juan said

        False:
        1) In the real world there is no 'essential component' in an Operating System and if it were there is no reason to think it would be the kernel.
The kernel is 'the most important thing in life' but for religious fanatics of the kernel, in reality it is one more element, replaceable and that nobody would miss, to such a degree that 99% of users do not care how it is calls your kernel and nothing notice if it has changed or not, while for Linux this is the center of its cult.
The kernel alone is useless, except for masses and fetish fantasies of the worst kind of fanatics, the tuxlibanux.

        2) The first name, which follows the same folder nomenclature, puts the kernel Inside the Operating System, that is, it is perfectly in line with reality, because the GNU environment surrounds the kernel, NOT the other way around.
The second puts both equally, as two addends.
The one used by kernel fans puts the kernel as the center of the Universe or the Universe itself and everything else non-existent and off the map, that is, totally inaccurate, arrogant and ungrateful.

        3) There are sects. Basically that is Linux. But the funny thing is that those tuxlibanux have the FSF as a scapegoat and they BELIEVE that they are 'not' the really fans.

        4) That is why I now avoid everything that smells like Linux (which is usually bad software by the way), and it has not gone bad for me. However from time to time I give other opportunities. But I always find the same thing.

        5) And speaking of sects, look who speaks of demons (who wants to possess us and is to blame for everything bad and so on).

        6) Stallman does NOT want to impose his philosophy on, nor does he want to change to OpenSource because he speaks for and for FreeSoftware, not for OpenSource.
In fact, it is the OpenSource that was born by those who wanted to change (and in fact changed) to their liking to Free Software.

        7) Linux is hardly going to be able to free itself from GNU because then they would be left with its spawn of ... nothing, a useless kernel. And if it does, it is to continue belonging and depending on something else.
That is the karma that you have to live for idolizing something incomplete and not working on its own.
Although it is Apple fans, they have had the merit of idolizing some who did have the talent and technical capacity to do a more complete job and above all that serves the user and not the other way around.

    2.    Juan said

More than 'you don't need them' is that can't use them y does not have the means to do so, since as you say it is only just a kernel, it depends on another set of things to serve and many more to give functionality and usability to the user.

      1.    pandev92 said

Most of the things we use so that you can have a usable system are not even under the gpl license, but mit, bsd or any other permissive

      2.    Staff said

        @ pandev92
Seriously? Many things come to mind that deny your comment.
A quick one is CUPS, which is in GPL and offers us the best integration and support of printers, even on Mac.
It will be for this reason that Apple got hold of it and thanks to the GPL license it could not make it exclusive to its system (Just as it has done with an endless number of things licensed under the old BSD)

      3.    Juan said

        @ pandev92
I am not very clear why you are talking about licenses.

The point is that Linux depends and needs a lot of things and the tuxlibanux who already want to cover their eyes, also need it to use their Linux because it alone is not functional or usable.

And speaking of licenses, you forget some that they also use and need, the Closed licenses of the heap of CloseSource software they use and that without it Linux does not work or it works even worse. They no longer take the OpenSource story seriously even in their own home.

To me, my favorites are the ACYL, they are flat, and you can change the style and colors as you see fit. I think the developer doesn't develop it anymore, but come on, they're great.

Maybe I'll take them to follow the development, but I don't have much idea of making them, maintaining them etc etc

Very good contribution to give our system a pretty face ... that impacts those who pay more attention to appearance than to functionalities.
A suggestion… to share they only offer facebook, twitter and google. These are invasive and information manipulative companies.
A site that promotes Linux, free software and respect for privacy should offer and PROMOTE the use of respectful alternatives (diaspora, identical) in addition to the basic email for those who do not want to be on any network.

Forgive my ignorance…. and since I downloaded the zip and unzipped it….
where are they put or how is it configured to have the new icons?

    I imagine that in / usr / share / icons / but…. so I just copy them?
Is something required for them to activate?
I wanted to download those highly praised Numixes but they are not free. How do I get them without apt-get?
It seems since Debian doesn't let me mount the repository.
    I appreciate any help.
