You don't like Unity? 3D not for you? Does Unity 2D seem like a fiasco to you? Do you miss the old Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface? Ha! Apparently we are not the only ones. Thanks to Martin 'Doctor Mo' Owens, we already have a PPA to download and install it without problems on Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04. |
Doctor Mo made possible what many have long longed for, perhaps even secretly: the return of the old and never well-considered interface of the Ubuntu Netbook Remix. One of the main advantages over Unity is that it is based on Mutter (just like Gnome Shell) and not Compiz, like Unity. This makes it unnecessary to install proprietary drivers to use it.
eye! It is not possible to use this interface under the Gnome Shell, it must be run under the classic Gnome interface.
Installation
I opened a terminal and wrote:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: doctormo / netbook-launcher
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install yeold-netbook-launcher netbook-launcher-efl
You can also download the packages from the PPA.
Source: OMG! ubuntu
This also works for 10.04 (lucid), just see the content of the ppa that is contained in the lucid folder: http://ppa.launchpad.net/doctormo/netbook-launcher/ubuntu/dists/
GODSSSSSSSSSSS MY PRAYERS WERE HEARD !!!!! I install it right now.
That's right ... 🙂
Whoops! I did not know that ... thanks for the data!
Greetings and thanks for sharing!
Pablo.
Haha! Here in Argentina "enchulado" doesn't mean anything ... but it sounds funny. Anyway, I understood what you meant.
A hug! Paul.
Good morning
The bad thing is that this repository only brings the main packages, which depend on many others, that only Ubuntu uses. So this repository only serves to return the Netbook Launcher to Ubuntu.
A repository with all the necessary packages would be fine to be able to add this interface to any distro based on * deb packages.
It's true ... at the moment it is the only way to install it. 🙁
If I find out of any way to do what you ask, I will post it.
Cheers! Paul.
it would actually be:
You don't like Unity? 3D isn't for you? Well, try the enchulado 3D Unity »
xD
Actually, that PPA is not necessary, you can directly do a sudo apt-get install netbook-launcher-efl, set your default desktop as Ubuntu Netbook Edition 2D and you will have the classic Netbook Edition returned! For more configurations I would recommend installing the go-home-applet to show the launcher, and gnome-window-applets taken from the webup8 ppa to integrate the title bar and window buttons to the panel and it looks excellent.
