The new Consort Desktop will use QT

Hello GNU / Linux maniacs, once again elruiz1993 brings you the last of what it has learned.

Today I bring an ad to the fans of SolusOS (which recently took new Alpha) and / or the fans who want to see what a madman with a dream is capable of (among which I include myself): Ikey doherty, the project leader, has announced that it will adopt QT for his "remake" of GNOME 2.

SolusOS_Alpha9

SolusOS Alpha 9 (XFCE)

Part of your decision has to do with that while QT it is a complete framework GTK + it is just a Toolkit that needs an unheard of external libraries to do anything, no matter how minimal.

He also emphasizes that at this moment what he is aiming for GNOME it's their own system (GNOME OS), therefore GNOME only cares about being compatible with itself (that explains why they don't give a damn what happens to other software that isn't made by them).

But it didn't stop there, the most important thing about the announcement (and what motivated me to write this note) is the following:

Give me no more than 3 weeks and I'll make a new ISO with a new, standalone Consort Desktop (it makes sense to keep the name), written in QT and using Wayland as a composer. Yes, Wayland. We will use Mesa 9.2.0 and the latest X.Org with XWayland support for devices that need Drivers.

Well, I leave it here. Although I probably won't use SolusOS as the main distro (I am already very comfortable in eOS) I will give it a look to see how Ikey's dream materializes. Greetings to all and see you soon.

A bow is the least you deserve, Mr. Doherty

3 weeks to wear it? Either the guy is the sage of the 6 ways, or he ate all the Qt books in 2 days. haha.

Hahahahaha .. Ikey is a good programmer. Although I don't know, maybe it's from The Matrix, and it sticks a skewer in the neck and injects knowledge haha

I most likely use wetson as a window manager and composer so the work of porting to wayland has already been done by the guys at free.desktop (actually I think it's the first time I realize the importance of wetson, I always wondered why so much effort in something that in the end was not intended to be used by anyone, in fact the last release of both, wetson had much more commits and development than the same wayland; here is the answer, for small projects or Whoever wanted, could use wtson or forke it or use what is necessary without having to do everything from 0, I mean KDE and gnome have their own composers but small projects like enlightment and consort need more help, either because of the free.desktop for creating wetson ) The other thing would be to make a shell in qt5 that is similar to the one in gnome2, which I suppose is not that difficult for him and those who help him in the project, but when in qt 5 you have tools as powerful as Qtquick / QML that you I understand, they facilitate a lot and save a lot of time when programming. so his time span is reasonable, maybe by the third week he will say that he needs 2 more weeks due to the setbacks that never fail but good xD

Great news, I already hope to have the final version as soon as possible so I can test it on Arch (if I can install it, of course).

  3.   pandev92 said

I will be interested to see, how will consort work under wayland 😀

    1.    eliotime3000 said

I'm also interested in seeing it work under Wayland (and it looks like Arch is already using Wayland).

Arch and Wayland? Where as when? O_O

I understand that it is in beta phase but you can download it and put it yourself but .. like everything in Arch at your own risk xD

          gtk3 needs wayland i think
Also by installing weston you can do weston-launch and you can use it although there is not much to see 😛

You need it as a dependency but you don't use it.

That's the impression, everyone is leaving GTK for the simple fact that Gnome doesn't mind not being compatible (look no more at LXDE and Unity). The good thing is that by moving all to Qt we will be closer to a standard in GNU / Linux 🙂

New DE, new graphic servers but we continue with the same problems. Do not get it wrong but as long as everything continues like this, GNU / Linux will never stop being the 3rd in contention.

This reminds me of the classic xkcd:

    1.    vicky said

But if the lack of a modern graphical server is one of the biggest linux problems.

    2.    pandev92 said

The problem is not that, as long as PC's with pre-installed linux are not sold, in a large way, easy to reach for everyone, and advertising campaigns are made on TV, posters, etc., linux on the desktop will always be the third.

Mmm hopefully a forces with maui project, they have similar goals.
Like Ikey is half crazy, he changes his mind more often than pants XD

I am surprised by the number of projects that change from gtk to qt, also now that I think I have rarely heard the opposite happen.

Ahh by the way chromium can be used with wayland

maybe for December I will give myself a new desk 😀

  10.   Inukaze said

Yeah !!! A very wise and intelligent decision, for years I have been telling you that GTK3s are crap, GTK2 is much better despite its defects.

    Well the QT3 / QT4 are great, but I have a doubt, will that be QT4 or QT5 ???
Since Wayland is supposed to support QT5 since the creation of its code, then I have that doubt, well, I want to try MIR & Wayland.

Although I still think that there should be a more "common" control when it comes to themes and window decoration. that everything adapts.

Well, I am currently using Mate 1.6.1 and E17 for desktops, I prefer the E17 but it has many flaws. XD

    1.    elruiz1993 said

I forgot to put it in the note, but it will use QT5 😀

I am leaving GTK 3.6 due to its limitations.
I am about to choose between WxWidget or Qt.
to try creating a mini text editor.
Where I need a lot of ready-made widgets like the grid, the tables, etc.

It would be good if you gave your opinion, according to the evaluation
      of the following points.

Which has more widgets WxWidget or Qt 4.10?

Which has better integration in GNOME and KDE WxWidget or Qt 4.10?

Better syntax and easier to program WxWidget or Qt 4.10?

Which one works best with other libraries and programming languages
      Qt 4.10 or WxWidget?

      1.    pandev92 said

        Qt is the answer.

        1.    marianogaudix said

It has a good integration with the GNOME desktop.
I still haven't been able to find the gallery of available Qt widgets. I need to see her .

I have already tried WxWidget. It has many widgets already made, for example the grid widget used in the speadsheet already comes by default in WxWidget.

          http://k41.kn3.net/taringa/4/5/9/0/2/8/1/marianxs/40E.jpg?4320

The popup window widget is also made in WxWidget, Combo Box with scrollbar.

That helps me a lot and saves development time.

Will it only be for Linux ?: Qt or Wx, it doesn't matter.
It will also be for winbug ?: ^.
Will the project be big ?: Qt.
Will the project be small ?: Wx.

The reason is that Qt can be too big for small projects (it has too many modules). Wx uses the native libraries of the system, so it is lighter in weight.

This genius should be HIRED by the FSF to contribute things like this to the community.

A Qt-based Gnome2 revival made in less than 1 month by just 1 guy that will already run under Wayland and Xwayland for driverless devices.

    Where to sign?

On the other hand, if Gnome were a company, how many useless do you have to fire?

Good for the SolusOS project but one thing needs to be clarified, GNOME OS does not pretend to be a Linux distribution as it might seem, actually it does exist but it is only a testing platform for new versions of GNOME ...
