There will be no more "official" versions of Songbird for Linux

No, it's not just another joke Day of the Innocents. Unfortunately yesterday they announced the abandonment of the GNU / Linux version. "After careful thought, we have concluded that we will not continue to support the Linux version of Songbird."says Georges Auberger. The developer team have also reflected on the paradox of promoting free software and that Songbird does not have a presence in GNU / Linux.

Despite the help they have received from the (passionate) 'linuxers', they cannot continue with the support for their system as it would not be possible for them to achieve the primary objective: to offer an extraordinary application for GNU / Linux. However, they will continue to host the versions for Linux that the community wishes to maintain.

Actually, Songbird's Linux version was a bit "behind" the Windows version for a long time. 🙁 As justified: "They would rather not distribute Songbird for Linux directly than distribute a bad, unfinished version." Actually, between the lines can be read: "Linux did not turn out to be a business and the effort (of the adaptation of the code and the support for new gadgets -ipod, mp3, mp4, etc.) is too much for so few dividends". I don't blame them, it's okay to want to get financially rewarded for all the time and effort put into the project, too bad they couldn't find ways to make money without abandoning Linux support.

This "more commercial orientation" is also noticeable in one of the new addons that appears on the main page of Songbird and that allows the integration with the store 7digital (yes, the same one that works with Canonical).

It is not a mere external addon, developed by third parties, but, as can be clearly seen on the addon page, it was created by Songbird's own developers. In addition, there it is clarified that Songbird partnered with 7digital to enable the purchase and download of high quality mp3s. The UK store is now "complete", the ones that still have some gaps are those in the United States and the rest of Europe ... Oh, do you live on another planet? Or maybe somewhere in the universe called Latin America? Asia or Africa? Well, bad luck.

Very ugly the attitude of the Songbird boys. Anyway, we still have very good alternatives to play our music on Linux.

I wanted to comment yesterday, but Disquis did not let me log in ... bad, very very bad, I am a recent Linux user, the Ubuntu distro to be exact ... and I am a music lover, being a frustrated Windows user and Macquero, I love iTunes , all its features .. and it is the ONLY thing I did less in Linux, I tried several players, and in Sonbird I found the most similar, for the addons and themes that can be put, although I kept entering Windows exclusively to synchronize the iPhone with iTunes, not only to take photos, and add music, if not for apps, since I don't like Jailbreak to enter via SSH (although sometimes I do). Anyway, bad news for users like me ... I'm waiting for the latest version of Ubuntu for native iPhone support, let's hope better players like Banshee and Amarok, for now I'm using the desktop version of Grooveshark 😉

    Greetingsm and excellent blog.

It's a shame, although everyone criticizes it, the truth is that I tried it and it seemed like a very nice player until I have all my covers organized

I think that it does not matter that we have better players, the software is not too much and the more variety the better.
I just discovered this site and I love it.
