The popular Thunderbird email client recently received a update with which it passes to the new version Thunderbird 68.0 which comes with many new features, for example, now all folders in an account can be marked as read, OAuth2 for Yandex can be used, and different language packs can be used in advanced settings.

It uses the XUL interface language and is installed by default on the desktop systems of various Linux distributions.

Main news in Thunderbird 68.0

In this new edition of Thunderbird 68.0 the release notes list new features, changes, and fixes. A One of the main differences from previous versions is that plugins can only work if they have been adapted by plugin developers.

So it is important to take into account that any plugins that have not adapted will be disabled when upgrading to the new version of Thunderbird 68.0.

We can also find that MAPI interfaces now also support full Unicode. Also, as we mentioned at the beginning in Thunderbird 68.0 the developers worked with the correction function so that now it can offer different languages depending on the conversation.

For Thunderbird 68.0 Attachments can be reattached without the need for re-uploading, as well as being able to mark all the folders of an account as read as well as it comes with Keepalive TCP for the IMAP protocol.

Users can run the filters periodically. The client is also accompanied by an improved filter log.

It is also highlighted that in this new version of the email client vComes with the addition of a policy engine for custom Thunderbird implementations in enterprise environments, using Windows Group Policy or a cross-platform JSON file.

To prevent the user's profile data from being degraded, Thunderbird 68 may display the message "You have released an earlier version of Thunderbird" and will not allow you to open a specific profile. So the solution for this is to launch the program with the –allow-downgrade option.

Regarding the bug fixes that stand out of this new version, we find the following:

  • The dialog for the sort order column in "Message Search" was lost after reboot
  • Global indexer resulting in high CPU loads under certain circumstances
  • Labels defined in IMAP folders were sometimes invisible to other users
  • SMTP password was not removed when account was deleted or server or username was changed
  • Converting from Mbox to Maildir would not work if Windows search integration was enabled
  • The messages were not removed from the Trash folder with Maildir. Note: Other Maildir-related removal issues may still persist.
  • When sending a message failed due to a security issue, only an "unknown error" was displayed. Now, more details are given.
  • Calendar: multiple connections to the same CalDAV server with different users did not work
  • Calendar - Time zone data can now include past and future changes. All known time zone changes from 2018 to 2022 are included.
  • Chat: In each conversation, an individual spell checking language can be selected now

Finally it is important to mention that for those who want to update to this new version or those who want to install it at the moment no installation packages have been provided prepared for the different Linux distributions but a single package is provided for general installation.

Whereas for Windows a 64 bit msi package is provided.
