Ubuntu 10.04 is now available!

Finally Ubuntu 10.04 and all its derivatives are out! After an unexpected delay, it was announced with this message on your mailing list that the final version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" is finally available. Although this version is the third with Extended Support (LTS), 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server, mainly focused on improving its stability instead of adding features, it does include some very important news.

New arrivals

On the desk:

  • Direct integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook and other social networks with the new MeMenu.
  • Ubuntu Software Center 2.0 releases new interface and supports software offered by Ubuntu, Canonical partners and developers at Launpad.
  • Integrated Ubuntu One with 2GB of free storage space, and up to 50GB for $ 10 per month.
  • Ubuntu One Music Store to buy DRM-free music and save it to your Ubuntu One account.
  • Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE) with faster suspend and resume functions that will extend battery life, in addition to its improved interface for small screens; but endured for only 18 months.

On the server:

  • Encrypted private directories.
  • Simpler to install and manage en masse.
  • Improvements for virtualization using Libvirt and KVM.
  • PHP 5.3, Python 2.6, Ruby 1.9.1, MySQL 5.1, Django 1.1, etc.
  • Virtual machines optimized for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud and Amazon EC2.

As always, the other official Ubuntu variants were also updated simultaneously, including Kubuntu (with KDE SC 4.4 and releasing its Netbook Remix), Xubuntu (with a new visual theme and finally incorporating the "Ubuntu Software Center"), Edubuntu (with LTSP 5.2 and fully graphical installer), Mythbuntu (with new visual theme and MythTV 0.23) and Ubuntu Studio (available only on a DVD image). The great absentee is Lubuntu, who still announces the beta 3 version 10.04 as the most recent.

Download

Here are the links to download the different versions of Ubuntu 10.04. Do not forget that it is advisable to download ISO images through torrents and not through traditional direct downloads, since, at least for the first few days, the servers are going to be very crashed.
