I don't think it makes sense to do something apart for companies, ridiculous, there are other distros that offer the possibility of everything without doing so much cackling and without registering, that is, free and free. Ubuntu should worry about solving boot problems of its distro since every 10 or 15 starts of a pc, you have to restart it in "recovery" mode and in most cases you have to reinstall the distro. The idea of Remix is just to have something like a "ready to go", and it is supposed to have some extra configuration. I admit that the registry is criticizable, but everything is to get that Virtualizer. There are free alternatives to this, I don't know if with that performance, but even so it seems that they are betting on competing with other solutions on the market, rather than providing something to the user. It gives me that feeling.
As for the pioneer distro, do you mean a Debian, or did you go looking for a Slackware type?
