Ubuntu CE: A distribution for religious

Yesterday I was quietly at my girlfriend's house when two people appeared at the door. They knocked kindly on the door ajar and when I looked at them from top to bottom, from their appearance and way of dressing, I realized that they practiced some religion. I was not wrong, they were Jehovah's Witnesses.

I am a person who respects each of the religions that exists, although I consider myself an atheist in my own way, because I believe that "something" exists and it is still not clear to me whether it is matter or divine. The point is that when I went to the door I received them with a cordial good morning, and as soon as one of them tried to guide me in the ways of God, I kindly interrupted them saying: Sorry friend, but I already practice a religion called Linux.

Of course I said it as a joke, but the man looked at me with an o_O face, he outlined a smile of those that mean: I don't even ask you so as not to seem ignorant, he turned around and they went to the next door. It is not the first time that some religious person tries to get into their beliefs, even once one of them who more or less had knowledge of Computer Science commented with me the relationship that she thinks exists about technology and religion.

This led me to think that how GNU / Linux It allows us so many things thanks to its philosophy, maybe someone had already created a distribution for religious purposes and I was not wrong.

Ubuntu CE to the rescue

There Ubuntu EC (Ubuntu Christian Edition), a distribution based on Ubuntu, which provides us with applications closely related to christian religion such as OpenLP, Read it, Xiphos, BibleMemorizer and BibleTime, which are focused in one way or another to study the Bible.

bibletime

I think it is very interesting that these things happen, that is, that Free Software allows the creation of specialized tools on topics to suit people's tastes and preferences.

Ubuntu EC

xiphos

Of course, many of these applications are in the repositories, so it is not necessary to download Ubuntu CE to use religious applications. Of course, what happens is that this distribution is already prepared and equipped with some software that follows the line of thought of Christians.

For example we have DansGuardian, a “parental control” system that allows access to websites that may not be to the liking of people using Ubuntu CE.

This distribution is based on Ubuntu 12.04, I don't know to what extent it is well maintained but it offers ISOs for 32 and 64 bits. You can download it from the following link:

Very good information. I clarify that there are witnesses who know a lot about computers, for example I have been a Jehovah's Witness for years and I love using OpenSuse with Openbox (although I admit that for years I was a Debianite :) ), I have even written some topics for Desdelinux. Even all Jehovah's Witnesses are encouraging you to visit the website: jw.org
Do not be scared, I am not going to spend it talking about God because it does not enter the topic of the blog, simply a small comment since the topic came up. I also really appreciate the information and that you have thought about the people who like to read the Bible.

Man, if the people I commented in the post had been like you, I would have felt bad for trying to tease them. Now that I think about it, I would have been looking like o_O if I had answered: I still use OpenBox with ArchLinux hahaha ..

      1.    Leo said

Actually I would have answered that I used ArchLinux until the system crashed with a little pacman -Syu, or something like that, I don't remember anymore, ha.

T he know that linux distros are free and free, it makes us have a clear conscience, everyone uses window but hacked it is inevitable, it is the reality, because of the high cost, it is not true, I am learning to use linux, discard completely window and I consider it a good option, even more so when there are no resources and also old equipment, which with Linux gives life again.

      Cheers to Leo and eVer.

I think the same as you.

Very good applications, especially openLP is a very good alternative to easyworship, it hurts that few churches give it the opportunity.

Now that the topic comes up, and I'm also a Jehovah's Witness… did anyone try Bible Time? Are resources available for it in Spanish?
I know that in Windows there is a widely used and widely supported Bible study program such as "e-Sword", to which you can install Bibles, dictionaries, commentaries, and even related historical books. With Wine it works quite well, but a bit heavy.
So I wanted to know if there is any quality alternative for our beloved penguin.
    regards
PS: TdJs are quite used to evangelizing… and I have already 5 converted to GNU / Linux: P.

    1.    Leo said

Some time ago I used a similar program, I think it was a free version of e-sword, but I don't remember it, but it was of very good quality and had many translations of bibles in Spanish, and I think it was written in QT. If you search for "bible" in the repositories it may appear.
      Greetings.

On Android this JW Library is in English and soon in other languages, you can install it by emulating a right-hander with virtual box and installing Android, it contains six translations, especially one that is in Greek and line by line to English, it also has several WT publications, it is very practical.

Yes it exists. And last but not least, I like Ubuntu better, but minimal (that is, without desktop nor GUI).

I was very surprised by elav's comment indicating that someone knocked on the door and identified himself as a Jehobah Witness. Yes; because he thought that those things in Cuba belonged to the remote past if we take into account that "religion is the opium of the peoples."
And if, indeed, elav, after all, in the end, be clear, or crystal clear, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, just GNU / Linux.

In my Baptist church, we use ubuntu 12.04, in the oldest pc's, in the newest one, we use windows 7, because it gave us a linux problem with the projector, the nvidia driver, it was deconfigured every Sunday xD

True religious fanatics use TempleOS http://www.templeos.org/ (It has its own kernel, even its own compiler inspired by God)

If you start looking there are many just for these topics there will be more than 10.
All those who use Linux are practicing Linux users eheh and that is important, believe what you believe.
Will there be something? And if there is, what is it? eheheheh the eternal doubt.

hahaha a religion that is Linux sounds interesting and freak at the same time, evangelize the word of Tux to each user who has their souls corrupted by Windows and do like the monks of the Age of Empires - http://img.desmotivaciones.es/201201/wololo.jpg xD

Regarding the aforementioned distro, it would be good if the application called Watchtower Library came installed by default 😀

    1.    Leo said

If you want the Watchtower Library, visit wol.jw.org, which is the same but from the browser.

I'm very happy that targeted distributions are appearing. This can attract many more users to the SWL world and the base distros get better. In particular, I am delighted with a distribution, also based on Ubuntu, specifically on Xubuntu, dedicated to translators: tuxtrad. Actually, it has nothing to do with religion, but the point is that a lot of good things can come from making targeted distros. Very good article, elav, I did not know this distribution.

I am an Evangelical Christian and I use a fedora with a gnome shell and OpenLP to project the songs, it is a pity that we no longer have a projector. Greetings to all.

    Good,
I have found the article funny.
As soon as I have seen the title I have not been able to resist reading it, and the first lines ... I already knew the outcome. ; P It was good. You have been respectful.
    Tell you I'm a Jehovah's Witness " Y " linuxer.
That I follow this blog since "let's use linux."
And that I would like to chat with you both as Linux and Jehovah, Bible, world, ...
And I think I can share a lot of both.
    But so you see.
jw.org is the most translated website in the world. I think it is something worth analyzing.

I hope you write me back.

PS: I extend the invitation to everyone
