Ubuntu says goodbye to application menus

Mark Shuttleworth just left a blog post announcing HUD (Head-Up Display). This new interface will replace Menus of applications. Crazy, huh?

Watch the video below and leave your comments:

In short, this new interface will replace the menus to access the programs and the system itself. It is definitely something new. Apparently, according to studies carried out by the people of Ubuntu, this system is faster than the traditional point & click (point and select).

At post that Mark wrote on his blog, tells us that the future for him is the use of voice as a means of action for applications. Wow!

Eager to try HUD?

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: unity-team / hud
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Will HUD make its way into the next Ubuntu release? Let's remember that it is an LTS, that is, an extended support version, which are generally more stable than the others.

Hello Pablo, I will tell you that the Unity interface did not convince me much, in fact I tried it but I am not enthusiastic, maybe it is due only to custom and if so, bad, bad, but anyway.
Now I see this system to access our things and functions and I think that this is a real change and if, as you say, it is the prelude to controlling the computer verbally then welcome. I think it's great.

With Gnome3 I imagine you mean Gnome Shell, and the truth is that that desktop is much worse than Unity, hahaha. 😛

As I answered in a comment above, the menus are removed. Now that if Unity does not put obstacles to enable them again, then yes it would seem something great to me.

It does replace them, in fact Mark even bolded it on his blog: "Head-Up Display, or HUD, which will ultimately replace menus in Unity applications."

Nor do you have to be very attentive to realize that none of the applications that appear in the video have the menus in view.

He was going to say exactly the same. HORRIBLE in every way. Now you have to search for everything; Even the options that you previously had right in front of your eyes and were just a click away, now you will have to look for them. Imagine when you want to do a repetitive action, for example, go from song to song. The number of keystrokes to use will be multiplied by a lot. This is usability 0.

But it is not so much as to change distro. As this is a Unity thing, it will be enough to change the desktop, and with the offer so large that there are plenty of options to choose from. I personally like Cinnamon a lot. 😀

I hold Ubuntu to full capacity, since it was the distribution that popularized our beloved free platform. But they're changing everything TOO FAST. This does nothing but scare the novice.

Well, it may be a good option. But the day the microphone doesn't work, I'll order you there ...
