UbuntuDDE 21.10 arrives with Deepin 5.5, Linux 5.13 and more

Recently the release of the new version of UbuntuDDE 21.10 was announced (Remix) which is a distribution that is prepared under the Ubuntu 21.10 code base and supplied with the graphical environment DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment).

Far the project remains an unofficial Ubuntu edition, but the developers are trying to get UbuntuDDE included in the official Ubuntu editions.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Deepin desktop environment, they should know that the desktop components of Deepin are developed using C / C ++ (Qt5) and Go languages. The key feature is the panel, which supports multiple modes of operation. In classic mode, a more explicit separation of open windows and applications offered for launch is carried out, the system tray area is displayed.

The efficient mode reminds something of Unity, mix of indicators for running programs, selected applications, and control applets (volume / brightness settings, connected drives, clock, network status, etc.). The application start interface is displayed in full screen and offers two modes: view selected applications and browse the installed programs directory.

What's new in UbuntuDDE 21.10?

In this new version of UbuntuDDE the launch of the Deepin 5.5 desktop was proposed and a set of specialized applications, developed by the Deepin Linux project, including the Deepin File Manager file manager, the DMusic music player, the DMovie video player, and DTalk messaging.

Long wait, right? But we are back, with our new launch as a New Years gift 2022. First of all, I would like to thank our beautiful community and our generous donors, sponsors, sponsors, supporters and supporters for motivating and supporting us throughout the cycle.

The new version of UbuntuDDE Remix 21.10 is codenamed "Impish" (Impish Indri). The current version is a non-LTS version and will be supported for the next nine months.

Of the differences with Deepin Linux, there is a redesign and delivery of the Ubuntu Software Center application with support for packages in Snap and DEB format instead of the Deepin application store catalog. Kwin, developed by the KDE project, is used as a window manager.

Changes in the new version include the transition to Ubuntu 21.10 package base with Linux kernel 5.13, the update of the Deepin desktop environment and related packages, the provision of an alternative application directory DDE Store 1.2.3, the update of Firefox 95.0 .1 and LibreOffice 7.2.3.2

Besides that for the installation of this new version of UbuntuDDE the installer of Calamares is used.

Finally, for those who are interested in obtaining the UbuntuDDE 21.10 installation image should go to the official website of the distro and in its download section you will find the links to download it.

The size of the iso image is 3 GB. The link is this.

Regarding the requirements In order to start the download and installation, first check the minimum requirements for its installation, which are:

  • Have at least 4 GB of RAM
  • Have at least 20 GB of free disk space
  • A 2 GHz or faster processor
  • DVD reader or USB port for installation media.

To be able to record the image on a USB device, you can use Etcher which is a multiplatform tool (Windows, Linux and Mac OS).

Or in the case of those who use Windows, they can also opt for Rufus, which is also an excellent tool.

Regarding the installation process, This is not the same as what we can find in Deepin but uses the same type of installation as in any other flavor of Ubuntu we can find (which is a shame, since Deepin's installer is very intuitive and simple).
