Valve: Linux is more viable than Windows 8 for the gaming industry

In a presentation at the Ubuntu Developers Summit (Ubuntu Developers Conference), taking place this week in Copenhagen, Denmark, a revelation emerged that is sure to shake up the software market for years to come: Linux is finally taking its first steps in developing games From first line.

The uproar started when Drew Bliss of Valve, the popular video game company, claimed that Linux is becoming the most viable platform as an alternative to Windows 8 which, in turn, comes with its own application store (a la Apple ) and is increasingly moving away from the flexible model of yesteryear that did not require developers to sell their applications through a dedicated Microsoft store.

Among other points in the conversation, Drew noted that Linux, on the other hand, has everything developers need: OpenGL, Pulse Audio, OpenAL, and input support. He also mentioned that the Steam client is working very well on Ubuntu and for that reason many developers contacted Valve with good game proposals. Ubuntu is the preferred platform for having a large user base and good support from the community, as well as from a solid company like Canonical.

All those registered for the event with a UDS Launchpad account will have access to Steam through a beta key (a new version of Steam Linux will be released in a very short time, although the date has not yet been well defined).

When asked about the new Team Fortress 2 Hats, he claimed that some rumors circulated, but that there is no confirmed information about it yet. At the moment there is no video available about him Ubuntu Developers Summit, but surely a recording of it can be downloaded in the next few days through the Ubuntu Developers channel on Youtube.

There are already Ubuntu computer options, such as Dell, System76, and others. Little by little the market is moving in that direction. Not to mention that M $, now that he wants to make his hardware too (or design it, at Apple), he is closing the doors to some large companies that manufacture hardware. Do you think those companies will sit idly by? Also, it is too easy to install it even as a dualboot.

Completely agree, microsoft is developing its own products (including hardware) an interesting case is Sony which does not want windows 8 because it will be integrated in the near future with xbox and Sony has a play station, the competition of the xbox, microsoft does not He is more interested than Microsoft and doing things like this may be rather good for Linux because companies end up looking for alternatives and one of them is precisely Linux.

Well what good news. Hopefully it will help the growth of GNU / Linux, and demonstrate the potential of free software for any type of development.
