What Android has achieved

A Android The same thing happens to him a little Ubuntu, is criticized by many and adored by others, and even questioned for being from Google and not be 100% open. I don't know to what extent it is Open Source or not, I do not know it and also, I am not a user of that OS.

The point is this. I just just spoke for Talk with a friend who was always nagging me to use GNU / Linux. For her, Windows is the best and the rest is useless. I don't put her name, but look at what she just told me:

(11:16:55) Her: This Android world is the best of free software
(11:16:55) Her: Hahaha
(11:17:04) Me: HAhahahaha
(11:17:05) Her: The only free system that has caught me is this Android
(11:17:09) Me: In the end you have to die with Linux
(11:17:12) Me: 😛
(11:18:00) Her: Everything you want and what you can't imagine is incredible, the community tells you

Despite that Android Whether it be free or not, or that it complies with the policies of the company that develops it, at least it has made my friend see something that I consider very important, something that she did not believe in or did not see favorably: The Community and all that it represents.

Is your way of thinking changing? It is a first step, but I think so ...

Now that I remember, I have spoken with many people who use cell phones with Android and when I told them that below what runs is GNU / Linux They did not want to believe me ...

Isn't Linux that black thing with white letters?

I have been asked .. No comment ... The point is, I think either Android o Ubuntu, with all the bad things they may have, if they have something very positive: they have the ability to bring users closer to this world, our world.

Android is Linux, but it is NOT GNU / Linux, so let's not start sucking our cocks again.

It's true, Android only uses Linux .. it's just the custom of calling everything GNU / Linux. 😉

How to believe that open source is free software (Free as a speech 😉)

        1.    Windousian said

Tell us the real differences between open source and free software. The ideological / philosophical load diverts attention from the most important thing: The software that falls into the two categories is the same (with exceptions).

If you have GNU things, install a bash / sh terminal on Android and you will realize that if it has GNU tools, another thing is that you do not use them or most do not know that it has them.

If there is something to thank these two paths of Linux, it is the approach that people have made to this world, 7 years ago more or less (I think it was that time) I would have told you the same about whether Linux was not only the console LOL.

My path started with ubuntu hardy heron (I think that's what it was called) and I was delighted, although love did not last long and I wore the open suse green shirt for 3 years and then ended up in the vast ocean of Arch which I do not regret.

now I take on the task of "evangelizing" about the free world and bringing more people to this wonderful SO. Not everything is honey on flakes but I hope that little by little we will exceed the quota that MAC has at least hehehe

And when you approach someone, what do you recommend?

      1.    rots87 said

Currently, if you do not know anything, mint or opensuse, but if you have already tried it at university or something like Debian ... I explain what terms such as repositories consist of and if possible I advise you to install them so that they do not suffer so much lol, always with due clarification that there are many other distro that as time and confidence go by you can try

I like it when one of my friends tells me "I want to do what you do with your system" and I answer them, well, yes, but you don't have GNU / Linux. Some have already started using it.

Just my imagination, not a serious comment or anything. I believe in free software too, you know, actually you just gave me the idea to promote free software around me, maybe I'll give away free Linux discs. I do not know.

Something is something, said the bald man when a hair came out.

This is good at least Android is doing us the favor of opening our minds to the closed minded; It is a shame that it is not promoted that it belongs to the Linux family so that the rest of the world falls 20 so that they know that not everything is Windows and Mac OS.

    1.    elav said

That's right .. it's at least one step forward.

Good friends Andorid as well as Ubuntu are taking GNU / Linux to more users, although there are many who criticize it, I think they are doing a good job.

Bare Android is OpenSource. Then the version of Google has incorporated some proprietary components (I would say that to make a comparison, proprietary components such as an installation of 99% of users on GNU / Linux could have).
CyanogenMod is an Android mod where you try to replace those proprietary components. But the fundamental thing about Android is OpenSource. But people like CyanogenMod or other projects could not take the Android code and make their Custom ROMs.

    1.    Windousian said

Very true what you write. Bare Android is open source software and free software. That is why there is Replicant. It is something similar to what happens with Trisquel and Ubuntu.

I was reading around that apparently Google wants to stop developing Android and plans to release a Chrome OS for mobile phones, the idea is to get a system in which the company has more control over it ... of course it is all a rumor.

Be careful if I study at the same school as me that with Ubuntu installed instead of using the terminal, the first thing they asked us to do was ctrl + alt + f2 and then go doing some command cd, ls, rm and they told us this is linux and point.

In any case if so, Chrome OS also has Linux kernel 🙂

Android has massively used Linux, and that must be respected by Google. But, the bad thing is the license model that they apply. But it's still pretty good.

  8.   rainbow_fly said

I have the same philosophy as Stallman in this case..Android is not free therefore it is not ethical ... but .. in the mobile section, it is a great step forward 🙂

    1.    Carlos said

We continue with what the drivers are proprietary, the system itself is Free, they already said it but CyanogenMod could not make variants.

    2.    eliotime3000 said

The same goes for Debian and other distros (up to Arch) because it allows the installation of proprietary software. On the GNU page he explains it with everything and details >> https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html << And the closest thing to the GNU philosophy is Trisquel, but I don't use it because I still depend on proprietary software, so I prefer to use Debian.

And it is true, when people really know the advantages of linux there is no turning back, ... .. my contribution in the rise of GNU / LINUX is to have passed 7 people from windows to linux ... 5 to kubuntu and 2 to fedora ... … So far I had no complaints…. although I do work every so often because they don't know how to do something or to install…. but little by little ... what if no one already wants the windows ... even more they have asked me to delete them 😉 .... I am sure that we are experiencing an important change in this SO… it was about time !!!

don't confuse users by saying "Although Android may or may not be free"
    ANDROID IS NOT FREE.
also it is stupid to boast of using linux and even worse android

whoever wrote that pseudo-article are the prototype of people who do bad to open source and sl. FLOSS

    1.    eliotime3000 said

I agree with you. Also, if you want to use a distro that is GNU / Linux itself, Trisquel is a good option (although many will kick it because it intentionally causes the browser to freeze to avoid plugins like Flash Player).

For now I'm sticking with Debian Stable. It is a marvel of distro and so far, it has not caused me problems like the ones Ubuntu left me.

Android will not be completely free, but it is freer than the competition and that has made it grow. And yes, original Android (AOSP) is open. The only thing that is generally not open without the drivers, more with some companies than with others (cof Samsung cof).

I have also told several people that Android has Linux inside it and they found it weird. Others if it seems great 😛

I will stay on Android until I finish as Symbian (if it happens), then I will go to FFOS for being the one that I find the most interesting.

I started using the Mandrake 9, but found it to be just as slow as Windows Vista SP2 Ultimate. Then I switched to Debian and until now I continue with this distro in its stable version which is really wonderful in terms of stability and it does not bother me with rolling release updates or anything like that.

With Ubuntu, I can say that it's great with its proprietary driver support and excellent LiveCD performance, but its graphical installer left a lot to be desired.

Now, the distro that I want to try is slackware, since it reminds me a lot of Debian, but it is between the simplicity of the Debian installer together with a support made by veterans and the advanced practicality and customization that you could find with KISS distros like Archlinux .

Anyway, if it weren't for Android and / or Ubuntu, there wouldn't be more enthusiasts enjoying these distros or enjoying older ones like RHEL, Debian (like me) and / or Slackware.

What you put in your article is somewhat true, it is a great approach that android and ubuntu gives to people who do not know anything about the linux world. I join them. I was not closed-minded, because I gave Ubuntu several opportunities but I never continued it, maybe I was not well oriented or I started to get tired that using commands that some pages recommended (to solve a driver or some problem) they could not solve or they damaged me (they really misconfigured) my system and had to reinstall it.

At that time I left Linux even with all the desire I had to learn to use a terminal and see the power that all Linux users commented that I had. I'm a fanboy of technology, and I love learning things. But a while ago the community was not as big as it is today. Two years ago I migrated from using nokia to blackberry, and in a matter of a year I hated that platform and I got a Galaxy S3, and a few months ago I gave ubuntu a try again but it has disappointed me, the same bugs and the same problems. I really want to learn, I want to use a linux distro as my personal OS, but I can't find one that I feel confident in. Ubuntu works at first but then it gets slow and heavy. I tried Arch Linux (which I think is very good from everything I have read in forums and pages like these) but I think I still don't have enough knowledge to get into it. I would like some good pdf or manual or video from another distro that is really suitable for someone like me who knows nothing but wants to learn. But that is not Ubuntu, I have already given it many opportunities and I always abandon it. Thank you. And I apologize if the comment was long, but I have seen that on this page there really is a good community of Linux Users.

Google turned Linux into a friendly easy product. If today Linux is more used than Windows, I surpass it in market share, counting PCs. Because I have 3 Android (tablet, camera and cell phone) and only a Windows laptop and because many acquaintances without a computer have their Android, I know.
But of course, most of them don't know they have Linux, they think they have Android. And it is that Google, for Android to succeed, made it a little less Linux, friendly, easy to use, with striking environments, backed by a large company, compatible, etc.
And increasingly similar to Windows, but it is not Windows.
And I must say that Android, made me reconsider and love Linux.

    1.    V´Ger said

False, Android is a product developed by the company “Android, Inc.”. "Google" saw the business and bought "Android." He also hired Android developers to continue with their development, the ease of use is due to projects such as Mandriva, Ubuntu and others; Android continued with this philosophy ...

The success of Android is due to the fact that it omits the name GNU / Linux, it does not mention the philosophy of "Free Software" / "Open Source", it comes installed as standard and also the software runs on a modified version of Java (which allows have the same software on different devices.)

I never understood the allergy to "Free" Software, if you say that you use GNU / Linux because of its philosophy of freedom, they will surely tell you "vade retro satan" ... XD

      1.    Roberto Garcia said

With transform, I did not refer only to the coding, which was originally done by Android inc., But to all the development, marketing, distribution and creation of the product itself. That the one that made Android successful was Google. Not only because it was modified a lot (the Android of 2005, it does not look too much like the final product in 2008), but because being realistic it was difficult for a small company like Android to manage to place such a successful product and make it massive in the market . Google gave it a tremendous boost.
Without a doubt, the success of Android is due to that, because it has a great company behind it.
I don't think users have an allergy to free software ... rather "fear". It is somewhat prejudiced, but when there is not a large company behind the end user thinks «and who is going to help me if it fails», «if someone does not pay to do this it is surely wrong», «who is going to give them support to a product that is not supported by a company "or" who works for free. " Myths, no doubt, but ordinary people will not get out of their heads.
Controversies aside, Android has changed the world of technology a lot. At least, paid software is no longer automatically associated with good software, and freeware with bad software. Android taught you that a free product can be good or even better than a paid one (and Microsoft continues to cry for that). One step is still missing, so that free software has the same acceptance, even if it does not have the backing of a large company, although the development model is different. Maybe in the future, it will look the same.
