What can we expect in Fedora 17?

A few weeks ago, the name (Beefy Miracle) and the release schedule of the next Fedora 17 operating system were announced. It is time to know some details about the features that this long-awaited version will incorporate.

At the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee meeting (FESCo) that took place on December 12, the developers approved new functions for version Fedora 17.

Fedora 17 Features

  • A simplified file system by moving everything to / usr (instead of having / bin and / usr / bin, or / lib and / usr / lib);
  • Btrfs will be the default file system;
  • Rendering software for GNOME Shell (that is, 3d acceleration will no longer be required to use GNOME Shell);
  • Boost 1.48;
  • thin provisioning;
  • Support for the D2 programming language;
  • Support for automatic extraction and removal of ConsoleKit;
  • Only the DRI2 3D drivers will come pre-installed (goodbye DRI1);
  • KDE Plasma integration with PackageKit;
  • New mechanism to check the quality of passwords;
  • New virtio-scsi storage architecture for KVM, based on SCSI;
  • Systemd integration (goodbye sysV);
  • Network simulator ns-3 discrete-event;
  • The Anaconda Installer, Redesigned?

    I think I do not understand many of the points that explain about it but the programs that Fedora will come with look interesting (to wait a full semester from my university and in return have the new Fedora together with the Mint based on the LTS 😀)

    For those above and below with the comments regarding usr: That scares me a lot along with the default file system, because if they make strange movements we will not know how well several of these packages are handled, if the PC's in which we install Fedora support this file system in this regard or how the / var, / home, / opt directories will be handled (which are the ones I occupy the most). I hope everything goes well because it is a robust distro

    we better see the characteristics accepted from the Wiki source of the Fedora project in the following link http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/17/FeatureList in the section called "Move all to / usr" it is explained what is the movement of the files and configurations of / bin, / sbin and / lib to / usr.

    I did not understand the first point, that the movement refers to / usr

    Instead of having / bin and / usr / bin or / lib and / usr / lib folders ... everything goes to / usr.
    According to the Fedora developers (and something similar I have read about other distros) that division lost sense ...
    Cheers! Paul.

    BTRFS is a fairly robust file system ... and ext4 was considered as an alternative, although it has not yet been confirmed that BTRFS is better than ext4 (except for the case in which large files are copied to solid hard drives -SSD- ).

    I think you guys would stop the versionitis and wait a good couple of months after the release before installing it; The changes are important enough to put it in production equipment so quickly. It is equally rare that the Fedora team disappoints us, but, I insist, the changes that are coming are important. Apart from that, the new Anaconda looks spectacular.

    regards

    I will try it when it comes out, to see if I can overcome my deb-dependency, hehe
    hopefully with this version you are lucky
