Why don't I want to use Unity?

We all know the new desk of Ubuntu, Shell for Gnome called Unity and that it has earned the affection and contempt of many people.

The intention of this post is not to discredit it, but simply to tell you a little about the advantages and disadvantages that it has from my point of view at least in the version 11.04. In fact, I must say that personally: "I love Unity" but there are very strong reasons that force me not to use it.

I like?

The style "Mac" I have always liked it. The buttons on the top panel, along with the applications tool menu is for me, one of the most successful decisions of the designers of Unity. Okay, it's a copy of Mac OS, but it cannot be denied that the result is very comfortable and saves us space on the screen.

However, in the betas of oneric we can see that now the button with the logo Ubuntu go to Dock (or Launcher, as you prefer), and although I have not tried it, I do not like the idea very much. Maybe I'm still adapted to the feeling that when we click on it, we will get a menu. Contrary to gnome-shell, when we need to use the Dock, this is shown above the window that we have open and therefore, it does not lose focus.

That I do not like it?

The positive things are over for me. The first thing I dislike is the default size of the Dock on screens that are not wide-screen. The feeling that I have no space on the monitor and that the Dock It is an excessively large bar and full of colors, it does not come off with lower resolutions from 1024 × 768.

The fact of being obliged to use Compiz is one of those strong reasons why I don't want to use Unity. Maybe one day I will have a good PC with excellent benefits, but now I don't have it. In fact the only PC that I have is my work and sometimes with 1GB is fair to me. Compiz controls almost everything like who says. Why don't they do a Administration Center for Unity where you can configure the size of the Dock, transparencies and everything else? All that depends on Compiz from what I have seen and I repeat to me, it does not serve me.

Speaking of Dock Who said I use the trash can? Why do they force me to have it stuck there without moving? And the same with desks. What if I want to have more than 4, or have none? And that amount of default colors I don't think is aesthetic at all, more than a professional desk, it denotes being something childish.

If we go up a little higher, to the right (the notification area), we will see that very soon there will not be one more indicator. It's okay to want to integrate it all into the gauges, but that makes the menus too large vertically for my liking. In addition, I like to use the tray and that many applications are minimized in it, so the top panel will be cluttered with icons.

I also don't like the way the option is displayed Run when I press Alt + F2 What was wrong with the little old box with its drop-down history?

That is not to mention the way in which applications now have to be accessed.Lens called? Anyway. It's too many clicks and keystrokes. In Gnome 2 for example, to open an application:

  1. Mouse click on the menu Applications.
  2. Put the mouse (without clicking) on Accessories and move it to Gedit.
  3. Click on Gedit.

That is, 2 clicks and walking. Now in Unity:

  1. Click on the icon Ubuntu (or with the Windows).
  2. Type what you want to search for (in this case Gedit).
  3. You found it? Well, click on the icon.

Just typing is a hassle. And don't tell me that I can add the launcher in it DockBecause if I add everything I use there, the list of icons would be huge and they would have to scroll a lot to find the one I want. Although I must admit that the method to add it is quite simple.

And these are the reasons why I don't want to use it?

Partly yes, but it is not the most important of all. The main reason I don't want to use Unity, it is because I am obliged to use Ubuntu. I have nothing special against this distro, but I don't want to have to enslave myself to it for using something that I like. In this aspect gnome-shell has an advantage, no matter if it is Fedora, Mageia, openSUSE o Debian, we can use it without any problem in any of them. In fact, I don't understand how Debian, which is where it comes from Ubuntu, cannot be used.

Unity is improving day by day and for the best U also get your good updates for oneric o Ubuntu 12.04, but this version in QtSo far it has presented me with some little problems so I can say that it is still very green.

I've always liked the “Mac” style.

The same one who told me where Malcer after the flame "But if you use Mac OS X, the most closed in the world" and above without using it JAJAJAJAJA

That's the problem, I hate blatant copies of something, which is why I will never try Unity even if they pass it on to other distros

It is that for tastes, colors. Mac can be very closed, it is true, but what I like is not the system, but the design of the interface and the arrangement of things on the screen. There is the difference.

Unfortunately unity reminded me of windows many years ago, unity is a place that cannot be configured and that is not good; for now I stick with linuxmint (gnome2.3) and also sabayon with xfce.

And I also have a machine with 1 gig of ram, I don't need more and I prefer the simple and configurable.

    greetings.

Well yes, it is one of the things that bothers me the most about Unity, not being able to customize it so much. I can't move the dock, add a panel, anyway .. It's frustrating !!!

One question, if I'm using unity like you, why doesn't the blue unity icon appear like you in my messages?

Eh elav, how's the resource consumption going in Unity? If when Gnome 3 had just come out and Ubuntu just came out with Unity and consumed more than gnome with its shell, gnome consumption has been improving, how is Unity going?

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Well, in fact I went back to LMDE on Saturday, I can't help it ^^ but I will tell you that the consumption of both is quite even, at least in the tests I did. I'll see if I make a post talking about the subject 😀

Equal? Have you tried the gnome 3.2 rc? good as soon as 3.2 comes out that improves consumption although they still have to optimize on that. uhm I will have to wait for ubuntu 11.10 to come out and try it to see how it works.

Obviously I have not tested the RC of Gnome 3.2. How does it work? I hope so, that over time they will optimize more resources.

Well, with unity I am very comfortable, the only serious problem I see is that they do not let us move the site bar, but well you get used to it, it is also true that it cannot be customized almost but the thing is that we do not use the computer to walk customizing everything every 2 × 3 if not to do productive things, and with unity I am very comfortable and if the icon bar could be changed sides it would be a hoot
