Xonotic, excellent multiplayer game for GNU / Linux

There are currently a wide variety of games for GNU / Linux, but ... and the graphic quality of these? Sometimes it is not the best, although that is not why they are bad games. Others are excellent, like The metro last light, but they are proprietary and are not very consistent with the philosophy of our favorite operating system. However, there is a game that apart from having good graphics, is completely free and free. It is about nothing more and nothing less than xonotic.

xonotic

xonotic is a first person shooter, ultra-fast, which takes us to the times of the fps arena. It has a single player game mode, but its strength is the multiplayer mode. It's quite popular, from what you walk in when you walk in, there will be at least one active server that you can play on.

The project xonotic it started because its predecessor, Nexuiz, which was of the same genre and also free, was discontinued to dedicate itself to a proprietary one that can now be purchased on Xbox live. xonotic brings important improvements regarding NexuizNot only an increase in the quality of the graphics more than evident, but also vehicles that will help us to make the game more fun on large maps.

xonotic as well I said is FOSS, licensed under the LPG. It has been developed with the engine dark places, a modification of the graphics engine Quake. It is still in an early stage of development (the current version is the 0.7), but I have played a lot and I can say that it has hardly any errors, or at least it has almost no major errors.

Xonotic appearance

Visually Xonotic leaves you speechless, one of the best I have found in GNU / Linux, and, without a doubt, the game opensource with better graphics. There are two versions, the one written in SDL and the one written in OpenGL. In my experience, SDL offers higher performance. In my GTX 660 ti with the configuration in ultra I have reached up to 800 fps.

xonotic

Game modes

En xonotic There are several game modes, the main one is CTF, that is, team flag capture, in which as in many other shooters, you will have to get the flag of the opposite team and take it to your field without the other team recovering yours.

There are also other typical of the genre shooter as DM y CT, kill game and team kill game. In FT we will have to freeze the opposing team to win, being able the members of our own team to unfreeze us being close to us. But there is a gameplay that I have never seen in a shooter, Which is CTS, in which taking advantage of the speed of the game, it will make us go from one point to another on the map in the shortest possible time avoiding obstacles, platforms, etc ...

Installation

It can be downloaded from the official repositories of Archlinux with the following command:

pacman -S xonotic

For the rest of the distributions, you can download the binary from the official website.

Download Xonotic

Even if you don't have a very powerful pc, you can enjoy Xonotic by adjusting the graphics, try setting them to normal.

      Greetings.

I'm sorry, I don't like that kind of games at all, they can be free and everything they want, but we need fps, with history 🙁

I am programming a game in C ++ and Python something like a Terraria for linux / windows with GPL v2 license. I am still working but I don't have much time when I finish it, maybe I will publish an entry.

Interesting game, although to save the manual installation process, I better use Desura to install it and thus play it online.

“Others are excellent (…), but they are exclusive”. I find it ridiculous to criticize and leave games aside just because they are proprietary. It is good that it is a philosophy for everyone to have the code at hand (although the vast majority do not use it and few know how to read it). Now with this steam a lot of very good games have come out. such as: killing floor, dota, team fortress 2, sid meiers civilization, xcom, etc. they are great and very good games but I'm not going to throw dirt at them just because they are proprietary

It looks good, and I don't know if it has much to do with the fact that it is based on the Quake 1 engine.

I play Openarena, which uses the Quake 3 engine. And its performance is very good.

Maybe when I have time, I'll give it a spin 😛
