Firefox 40 adds sponsored sites in the «new tab»

This had been discussed for a while and apparently with version 40 of Firefox it will come true. Today when updating using the Beta channel I find this:

Firefox Assistant

As you can see, it is a new Wizard that will show you what is new in this version with respect to the New Tab. As he says:

Now when you open a new tab, you will also see sites that we think you might find interesting.

Okay. How the hell will Mozilla know what I'm interested in or not? And watch out, I'm not saying this with anger, far from it, just curious.

Firefox Assistant

The good thing about this second part is that they tell me that we can Delete o Fix any site, so what do we worry about huh? «This if I said it with sarcasm ¬_¬

Firefox Assistant

Man, let's be done !! I already know how Mozilla finds out how I use the new tabs. The good thing about this is, as I said, that it can be deactivated, also to be honest, until this minute I have not had any sponsored page, I do not know if it is for me configuration or what do I know ...

I'm not going to deactivate the option yet, I want to see if it really shows me something that I'm interested in seeing ... I'll tell you about it ... How do you see this? Does it bother you? Not the truth to me, in addition, I do not see bad that Mozilla has income in this way.

The funny thing is the unicorn ... recently or yesterday I opened firefox (in Windows, in debian I use iceweasel) and on the main screen it tells me a short story about unicorns and that maybe I would be interested in installing a unicorn theme to my browser ... O__o

      What?

Won't you be a fan of MLP by chance?

Also in firefox for windows xp, they offered me to install the happy theme of the unicorns, and the history of those creatures.

Let's see what they bring with the animal.

Not only that, if by "customize" you leave the menu tray empty, you get an XD unicorn.

Well, I don't know how Firefox will do it, but I have Chrome and if in one tab I search for a word in Google, in another tab where I have Facebook open, advertisements with that word begin to appear. Magic.

Google spies on you so you can live better ..

If it is anonymous as it claims to be, it would not matter much to me ... I am more interested in seeing which pages it will recommend to me but I agree with you for what you mention at the end, it is somewhat strange to see Mozilla collecting income in this way.

I have a question, if Mozilla will save any information about us. Will Iceweasel do it too?

Firefox makes money with those shy sponsors, Google selling our data to private companies, which is the difference… Oh.

  6.   Gilbert said

I do not see the problem, I also tested the beta and you can choose if you want that function oh no, it's that simple, now Mozilla can't try to make money without being talked down to…, as long as it's optional, perfect.

Sounds good to me, I gladly support Firefox

What is Mozilla waiting to privatize its browser?

First the "pocket", now personalized advertising, now they come out with the story that they do not sell personal data.

"Midori" has big problems with extensions and is a bit slow, but I am changing.

For the sheep: "PRIVACY IS A HUMAN RIGHT, THE UN."

With that mentality I imagine that you work for the love of art. It can bee in agreement or not . but it is a licit way to finance yourself. If you do not agree with their policy, you can download iceweasel and issue settled.

    2.    elav said

Raul, as chambertuX says, it is very difficult for a company like Mozilla to work for the love of art, indeed, I think it is impossible. As I mentioned in the post, it doesn't bother me that they do this, much less it bothers me when they give me the option to deactivate it.

Personally, I don't think it's bad, I'm quite a fan of Mozilla and I don't mind helping them a little by letting them show me advertising that interests me, and I can always turn it off if it bothers me at any time.

Right now I am with version 40.0 (Beta), before I used Firefox Aurora, which I think is in version 41.0. The truth is that with the new tool that they are going to add (I have already had the opportunity to test it in Aurora), Electrolysis, the performance increases considerably.

Firefox 40 ?, In some system repositories there is still Firefox 38, the Firefox browser has become great thanks to its policy of providing excellent service and protecting its users. Give yourself a few versions back, what is it that firefox is putting advertising like "pocket" and others that possibly track users? Stop firefox nonsense and do not fall into the policy of google accepting its tools.

    1.    chambertuX said

If you bear all the expenses, they will surely pay attention to you.

      1.    emo said

With that mentality (policy) that you have, they would only be leading to it to stop being attractive, and the user prefers another browser like Midori and DuckDuckGO search engine, which is also very good and safe.

        1.    chambertuX said

Since I have the mindset you say, I use Debian.

It is obvious that today everyone (in some other way) knows something about me. But since I have nothing to hide, it doesn't bother me that much.
Even so, if someone has to know something about me, I prefer a thousand times that it is an open project like Firefox that gathers some data of mine, than others that are not worth mentioning.

  12.   eliotime3000 said

Interesting, although obviously, Iceweasel will disable in the first instance (or remove it when compiling it) that sponsored links functionality.

  13.   Nonamed said

It may or may not be optional, but even if you have it disabled, will mozilla continue to collect information about our navigation?

we will have to look for a browser that stops looking for its interests, and looks more for the interests of its users

lately firefox with each new version takes a step back

Maybe the unicorn is your new pet, since firefox has not been firefox for a long time, better change it mascot, logo and name

    1.    Oscar Martínez said

Why should he? It is true that Mozilla has changed, but it continues to maintain its principles of freedom and privacy, so I believe that if you configure your browser to not give data to Mozilla, Mozilla will comply.

Lately they are a bit short of money, so to me personally, it does not seem wrong to help them a little in this way, which can also be deactivated whenever you want.

      1.    eliotime3000 said

And for those who are fed up with the original Firefox, there will always be forks like Palemoon and Iceweasel.

  14.   mdrvro said

It can be deactivated, it is a choice. Good for mozilla.

  15.   HO2Gi said

Panic attacks, it is true that our data stopped being private long ago SINCE MOST OF US COME FROM WINDOWS, let's not forget it, and in the face of an economic change that firefox is looking for, we attack right away. FIrefox will remain my default.

  16.   Juan Carlos said

The next version looks interesting, however in my Ubuntu 14.04, I continue with version 38, does anyone know why it is not updating?

    1.    eliotime3000 said

      @Juan Carlos:

In the Mozilla Security PPA, Firefox 39 is available before its official launch. Even said backport it is useful for those who use Debian and hate Iceweasel.

hello, pocket button disappeared in firefox 40? I'm looking for it but I can't find it even in extensions
