How to install Linux from a USB stick

This instruction is used to install any distro via USB. In addition, it is especially useful for those who own netbooks and therefore cannot use the LiveCD to install Linux.

Basically, what we are going to do is use a little program called UNetbootin, which has versions for Linux and Windows.

Steps to follow

  1. Download the ISO image of the distro in question.
  2. Download UNetBootin. In Ubuntu, it is easier if you install it using Synaptic.
  3. Run UNetBootin from Applications> System Tools.
  4. Insert the pendrive
  5. Choose the ISO image downloaded in step 1 as the source.
  6. Choose USB drive as destination
  7. Accept and wait for it to finish (it may take a few minutes)
  8. Restart the computer, configure the BIOS to boot from USB.

Thus, you not only save CDs / DVDs that you would have been forced to burn before, but you can test entire operating systems without erasing an iota of the data stored on your computer. Not to mention that works much faster that if we booted the system from the LiveCD / DVD.

To recover your USB, It is recommended to format it, but it is not an indespensable requirement, deleting all the files copied by UNetBootin is enough. 🙂

Little problem, I did all of the above trying to install Kubuntu 12.10 on a usb. And he told me it worked. But when I turn on the pc I get boot error. Al .iso already verified the md5 sum. And the BIOS is already configured to boot the usb. But whenever I try, I get Boot error.
I tried booting ubuntu with usb and if it works.

It happens exactly the same. at the moment I am creating the bootable usb with another program (lili) to see if it improves something. Could someone tell me why this happens or how to solve it, in case Lili doesn't?

The easiest way to use unetbootin is to download the ISO file of the distro you want to use "by hand". In other words, go to the Linux Mint page, download the ISO that you like the most and, once it is finished downloading it, use Unetbootin to create the Live USB with that ISO file that you downloaded earlier.
    That easy.

    Cheers! Paul.

I'm going to test it with Debian, it looks good. By the way, step 5 is wrong, the image is downloaded in step 1, not in 2. More than anything because there is still some newbie who goes crazy with these minutiae.

DO NOT forget that the pendrive you have to format as FAT32 if you leave it as NTFS it does not work for you

The truth is that I don't know why you get that error.

Regarding the other point, I imagine that the message that you get when you exit Lubuntu is normal, because it assumes that you are using a CD such as LiveCD and not a pendrive. What you have to do is extract the pendrive and press enter.
    Cheers! Paul.

hi, i need some help, i have tried unetbootin since ubuntu 12.04 to see what lubuntu looks like. I liked it and tried to complete the installation, but I have many partitions on my disk, so I could not, and now it does not let me start ubuntu it tells me that I have to start kernel before, I can only get into the lubuntu test, of which it does not I can do anything.
I hope you can help me
    Regards

I didn't understand anything Juan! Start the kernel? What is the mistake that throws you? In what context? Develop the problem a little better to see if we can give you a hand.

Hello, thank you very much for such a prompt response.
The fact is that I tried unetbootin with lunubu, and when I rebooted the system to get into ubuntu, it didn't let me get into it, it said: "you need to load the kernel first" error.
Another thing that may also be important is that when I exit lubuntu it tells me "please remove intallation media and close the tray (if any) then press enter", and I don't know what to do.
Thank you very much for your help and for your blog.
    Regards

I did not do it for a USB or CD but directly from the hard disk, it only let me enter the demo of lubuntu and windows. Totally a bitch, because I was not allowed to do anything.
What I did in the end is to format from windows the partition where I had ubuntu (I lost all the programs, saved pages and others) and install lubuntu from scratch.
A bummed week but I hope lubuntu does well for me.
Thank you very much for the help and attention
    Regards

Hi! Thank you for spending time on these topics.

About what I have not found help, nor in the UNetbootin page, it is about the situation in which the usb can be previously, let me explain, what happens if half of it already has data but one wants to use the other half to put the desired distro? If that is possible, how would one go about accessing the data? or will the splash of the installed distro be triggered whenever it connects?

When a linux distribution is installed on a usb does it also create the boot, swap and home partitions? Can you use a big usb, say 8 Gb or 16 Gb, for two distros using the same program?

Finally, and just out of curiosity because Manjaro already has its own guide, why won't UNetbootin work for Manjaro? 🙂 At least I wait for an answer to the first question, thank you.

  19.   The Delfer Orchard said

manjaro can not use this method, a dd is used or burned with an imagewriter

hey after making the usb bootable, for it to boot the files I have to unzip the linux image?

  23.   Let's use Linux said

No it can not be done…
If it were that easy, you wouldn't need Unetbootin.
What this program does is create several configuration files automatically so that you can start the system without problems.
In case you are interested, I recommend you visit the following pages: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNetbootin
    Cheers! Paul.

    Hello…
and it can be done by unzipping the image on the direct usb (previously formatted) ... without using UNetBootin? ... (obviously configuring the boot from the usb) ...

What does UnetBootin really do on the pendrive? besides copying the files from the unzipped iso image ...

    thanks…

SYS LINUX 4.07 EDD 2013-07-25 Copyright (C) 1994-2013 H. Peter Anvin et al

I have tried 300 different programs to mount an .iso distribution on a USB and I get the error in all of them. I have an Acer Aspire One and I can't install linux if not with USB.

I have looked for information on this website:
    http://www.infomaster21.com/foros/Tema-Resuelto-Problema-al-instalar-una-Distro-de-linux-con-Unetbootin-u-otros

Look, the safest thing is to use the dd command from the terminal to transfer the ISO to the pendrive, it is easy to follow the steps http://aprenderconlibertad.blogspot.com/2014/06/crear-facilmente-un-pendrive-booteable.html

Okay. I am quite new to this. I never installed a windows for example and less ubuntu 14.04. What I want to do is test ubuntu 14.04 from the pendrive. The problem is that before trying, I did not understand the instructions. I downloaded UNetBootin for windosws and saved it to a pen along with the iso image of ubuntu 14.04. The question is the following, do I have to do something else before I start testing ubuntu from the pendrive, or with the programs loaded without installing, can I start perfectly?

    1.    daniel said

friend to start the unetbooting you have to install it on your computer and not pass it to your usb since this is no use ... install unetbooting on your computer after that below select iso image then look for the iso image previously downloaded and saved in your pc then click on create and voila the unetbooting program will do everything when it asks you to restart you give it to accept and configure your computer to boot with the usb and that's all.
