How to read .ePub books in Firefox

We have already talked about digital book readers (pdf, epub, fb2) here at DesdeLinux (FBReader y Caliber), are applications available for Linux that allow us to read (and much more) electronic books that we download from any site in free epub (a quick google search returned dozens of them), but not all of us prefer to have an application for everything. For example, I prefer to have a mail client, a browser, a PDF reader, a programming IDE, all in separate applications, while others prefer to have everything integrated / united in their browser, for them is that I write this post .

EPUBReader in Firefox

Firefox once again surprises us with the addons it has available, in this case to open .epub files in Firefox we can use the addon EPUB Reader.

EPUBReader on Mozilla Addons site

Once installed it will ask us to restart the browser, when we do we will find a screen like this:

epub-firefox-welcome

Here it shows us a little help, for example it tells us that if we want to open some .epub that we have on the computer we simply open it with Firefox, it (the addon) will know what to do. It also tells us that EPUBReader has a catalog in which the books that we have downloaded or that we have opened appear, here is a screenshot of the Catalog:

epub-firefox-catalog

Open book

When we have opened a book a small window will appear, it shows keys to press to move or manipulate the book, for example:

  • Keyboard arrow keys to navigate through the book pages
  • Key C to open the catalog
  • Key S to save a copy of the book
  • Key D to set a bookmark
  • Keys + y - to zoom in or out
  • Key From to show / hide the table of contents (left panel)

Here are two screenshots:

The end!

There are many addons for Firefox that are interesting, several related to ePubs, I'll talk about another one that was very useful at another time 🙂

Greetings and… even so, I still prefer Okular (pdf reader and KDE etc) to read everything related to books on my laptop.

Who the hell reads ePubs on PC? 😛

I read ePub on the laptop when I didn't have an e-book reader. It is preferable to pdf since you can modify fonts, colors, etc. The add-ons for firefox don't respect the ePub layout much, but neither does FBReader.

Me: / reading ePUB on a smartphone, even with 5-inch screens my eyes are screwed 😐

I read them from time to time, either because they are the type of files that I have at hand (and not a pdf version) or simply, because a large screen shows more letters and paragraphs than the small one on the cell phone 🙂

Those people who only have their netbooks and do not like to use tablets or smartphones because of how uncomfortable it seems to use.

For my part, I am happy and content with my PC, and I prefer a book in physical format since the screens of tablets and smartphones tend to accentuate my dark circles more and tend to bother my eyesight.

There is a specific invention to read epubs without damaging your eyesight, they have a screen with electronic ink, and they improve over the years, for example:

And it's not for advertising, just for being Spanish manufacturers I put it xD

Very good tip, but I at least, to read on the notebook, I go more than enough with the ebook-viewer that comes with Caliber, although I usually use my old PDA to read, at least until I manage to get hold of a decent e-book reader.

Thanks for the tip, although to read epubs, I have plenty of Azardi and Caliber. 🙂
