Icedove is an open source email, newsgroup and RSS client exclusively intended for Linux distributions based on Debian GNU / Linux. It is based on the Mozilla Thunderbird source code.
As in Iceweasel with respect to Firefox, the trademarks (Thunderbird and the logo) have been removed since their distribution conditions are not accepted by the DFSG. |
If you are a GNU / Linux user, it is highly likely that you use Icedove as an email client on your personal computer.
And if you are in the office ... it is very likely that your company forces you to use proprietary operating systems and packages, which do not have the flexibilities that one gets used to in the free world.
But it is not impossible, since with a little patience, Icedove / Thunderbird can be used in a corporate network environment dominated by Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange / Outlook.
In order to use Icedove / Thunderbird in this environment, you have to use a special program that will act as a gateway between Active Directory / Exchange and our email client, called DavMail Gateway. The way to configure the system in a Debian environment I posted a while ago here: http://wiki.debian.org/Exchange_GAL_desde_IceDove
The tremendous advantage of Icedove / Thunderbird is its add-ons (or "plugins"), which allow you to modify the behavior of the post manager to suit the most demanding.
The ones that I use for work purposes are the following:
Folder Pane Tools, allows you to customize the order of your different email accounts, define the one you will use as default and the way in which they are presented. Very useful when one works with several accounts. In my case, with two accounts within the company under Exchange, and four external ones on the web.
LDAP - View Groups Members, allows you to view the data of the LDAP directory members used by the company.
gContactSyncSynchronize your email client contacts with your contacts on Google.
Google Calendar Tab, add to the email client a tab with the details of your public or private Google calendars.
Provider for Google Calendar, allows you to manage public and private calendars based on the Google web from the mail client.
thunderbrowse, adds web browsing functionalities to the mail client, so it is not necessary to open an external browser to consult the links that are received.
ImportExportTools, allows you to transfer and capture email files in various formats, either to transfer them to another computer or to create backup copies.
And for you, what are the add-ons that Icedove / Thunderbird cannot miss to boost productivity at work?
Barbarian. 😀
At first it did not justify these debian rebrand, now with the new firefox that commands things without consent, I agree with them. They can be deactivated but no one asked them to be there, they are implicit agreements that in many countries is illegal.
The link to the Debian Wiki has a slight error; instead of Icedove, you should say IceDove (with a capital D), like this:
http://wiki.debian.org/Exchange_GAL_desde_IceDove
New Firefox that sends things without consent?
What do you mean?
I don't know if you have the user manual or how you search for users in LDAP with the LDAP extension. That way we could benefit from finding the contacts and learning how to use it.
Thanks for the extensions by the way, I have used several and many are helpful to synchronize contacts and export information, maybe I can help you with import / export when time allows me =) (Y) ...
Searching for users over LDAP is transparent. When you compose the message, while you type the name, the coincidences appear. Or you go to the address book, and use it as usual in the GAL folder.
Corrected! Thank you!
I suppose you refer to what appears in the image, they are enabled by default but can be disabled.
