Linux kernel 3.3 already has an RC (Candidate to be Released)

After two weeks of the Linux kernel 3.2 has been releasedLinus Torvalds ad the first 3.3 candidate to be released.

Here are some of the changes / news that this version of the kernel will have:

  • A new mechanism that would adjust the size of partitions ext4, this is supposed to improve performance and speed a bit compared to the previous method.
  • In addition, functions were added to the software code RAID, will allow you to move data that is in use from one volume to another. I mean, this translates to "hot replace" 😀
  • Architecture support added Texas Instruments'C6X, ACPI 5.0as well as for technology LPAE (Large Physical Addresses Extension) for ARM, with which some processors arm v7 they will be able to use more than 4GB of memory.
  • The developers also tell us that they have improved the audio support HDMI in the drivers DRM / KMS for AMD and graphics chips Nvidia.
  • Open vSwitch and an Ethernet driver that will work as a 'team', that is ... they will combine multiple network ports into a virtual one.
  • As we said before, Android drivers will be added.
  • The graphics drivers of GMA500 for US15W de Intel, as happened with some of Hyper-V.

With all these changes, the tar file for this first release candidate (RC) contains about 38.173 files, for a total of 15.207.578 lines of code.

Now ... I think it's valid to mention that long-term support kernels can still be used (2.6.32.54 y 3.0.17). Which are recommended in case you do not want to have the latest kernel, if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of new functions in order to gain stability, it is not a secret that new kernel = generally, stability problems.

Anyway, this new kernel in my opinion will bring several improvements especially, for those who work with servers, for the computer user ... I think that the improvements at the moment are not significant 😉

regards
