With little left until the end of this month of August 2020, we bring our customary review of the many news, tutorials, manuals, guides, or publications highlighted on the field of Free Software, Open Source and GNU / Linux, which we have published in the Blog DesdeLinux.
Monthly summary, that as many of you already know, is intended to provide a useful little grain of sand for all our readers, especially for those who did not manage to see, read and share them in a timely manner.
Therefore, we hope that this series of articles, on the good, the bad and the interesting, inside and outside the blog DesdeLinux is very useful, for those who want to keep up to date on our publications, and the topics related to the Informatics and Computing, and the Technological News, since, sometimes many do not usually have the daily time to see and read all the current month's news that ends.
August 2020 Summary
Within DesdeLinux
The good
- Linux 5.8: the largest version of Linux history has already been released: A new version of the Kernel, which has become the largest in terms of the amount of changes incorporated. In addition, these changes cover different parts of the core and are mainly related to internal processing and cleaning.
- Window Managers: Graphical User Interfaces for GNU / Linux: Since the beginning of GNU / Linux, the use and diversity of available Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) has been growing. And in this post, you will find a compilation of more than 50 Window Managers both independent and integrated into a Desktop Environment.
- Telegram or WhatsApp: Why is TG the preferred App for Linux users?: For us lovers of Free Software, Open Source and GNU / Linux, it is evident that when it comes to using Telegram (TG) or WhatsApp (WA), we prefer the former over the latter. But exactly why is Telegram the Linuxeros' preferred messaging app?
The bad
- A new Foreshadow attack affects Intel, AMD, IBM and ARM processors: A group of researchers from the Graz University of Technology in Austria and the Helmholtz Center for Information Security (CISPA) have identified a new attack vector from Foreshadow (L1TF).
- The deplorable situation with satellite Internet security: Black Hat presented a report on security problems in satellite Internet access systems. The author of the report demonstrated the ability to intercept Internet traffic transmitted through satellite communication channels using a low-cost DVB receiver.
- An attack was registered in Tor that tried to manipulate user traffic: The author of the OrNetRadar project, which monitors the connection of new groups of nodes to the anonymous Tor network, published a report on the identification of a large operator of malicious Tor exit nodes, which is trying to manipulate user traffic.
The interesting
- First builds of Elementary OS 6 now available: The first compilations of Elementary OS 6 are now available so that users can try all the new features of this update higher before the launch happens.
- Unity acquires the Spanish company Códice Software: Unity Technologies, the developer of the famous Unity 3D graphics engine (not to be confused with Unity Shell), has made a curious acquisition. They have bought the Spanish company Códice Software that provides SW Plastic SCM, a version control (VCS) alternative to Git.
- LibreOffice 7.0 comes with many compatibility improvements DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and more: LibreOffice 7.0 comes with a number of key changes and enhancements, including vastly improved compatibility with Microsoft's suite, as well as various performance enhancements that come from Vulkan GPU-based acceleration.
- UKUI: A lightweight Linux Desktop Environment made with GTK and Qt: UKUI is described by its developers as a light and fast Desktop Environment built on a "pluggable framework" for Linux and other Unix-like distributions. Furthermore, it is offered as a Desktop Environment capable of providing a simpler and more pleasant experience to browse, search and manage a Computer using GTK and Qt technology.
